Reliable

I haven't used any other tax software products but TurboTax. And I have no desire to. TurboTax make the process painless and **almost** enjoyable. I like the feature that at any given point in the process you can see what you owe or what your refund amounts to.
What's great about it: Easy to use. Good documentations. Easy upload of long 1099-B's.
What's not so great: I got burned once on the option to open an IRA - I couldn't use the benefit.

Getting better every year
on April 15, 2015

I should have done earlier but due to changes I was last minute getting this done and worried about problems. No Problems. :-)
What's great about it: I found this years Turbo Tax easier and better than years past.
What's not so great: I wasn't sure about standard vs. itemized deductions but took Turbo's suggestion on Standard and will compare later.

turbo tax is very good.... but that does not mean they have to increase the price....PLEASE don't increase the price next year.
I love it and have been using it for over 30 years. I am afraid i will have to switch if price increases.... it allows me just enough to account for the price of Turbo tax....
please do not increase price.
What's great about it: Turbotax (all version) it works perfect
What's not so great: TOO EXPENSIVE
Pros: My job status changed this year (switched jobs, lost a job, got a raise or promotion)

I used the 2014 turbo tax premier version for this year. I have used turbo tax for years and I find it to be the easiest to use easiest to understand software on the market. As usual it was thorough and easy to answer the questions. As usual it did a super job.
What's great about it: thorough, easy to use, efficient
What's not so great: none
Pros: I bought or sold investments

2014 Turbo Tax
on April 15, 2015

Number 1. Issue: My tax filing is normally very simple. Other than a standard 1040, I normally only have to file schedule B and schedule D with 8949's. I've been using Turbo Tax for over 10 years and normally only need Turbo Tax Basic. This year they changed the software so that I have to go all the way to Premier in order to file. Bummer.
Number 2 issue: They've tried to simplify the Q&A so much down to a level where customers would not need to know anything about 1040 form or other form calculations. I think this makes it more difficult for individuals who have some knowledge of how calculations are made.
Next year I may switch to TAxAct or H&R now that they have software that will download my previous year data and IRA info from Turbo Tax
What's great about it: Good for a first time Turbo Tax user
What's not so great: Too much change in format from previous years of Turbo Tax
Pros: I bought or sold investments

great program! been using it for over 20 years. I used the choose my own method. I did not like the fact that as I completed each section, it would automatically go back to the top. I didn't like that I would have to scroll down each time to go to the next section that I want to cover. I would much rather that after I would complete a section that it would move down, & my next section would be there
What's great about it: I love the fact that it saves all my info from previous year
What's not so great: I did not like that as I went through each section, it would jump back to the beginning each time.

Great until state rejects the electronic return
on April 15, 2015

I've used TurboTax for 20 years or more. With simple income from wages and investments or pensions and investments I had no trouble. This year, I sold a piece a property which was a long term capital gain. In California, as a part of the sale, tax was withheld on a Form 593. The withholding amount was entered as a withholding amount on your worksheet. It ends up appearing on Line 5 of IRS Schedule A instead of line 8 with an explanation. CA rejected the electronic submission with the following TurboTax explanation: F540-670 - There is an error on Form 540, Line 71 (CA Withholding). Line 71 must equal the total amounts of California tax withheld on all W-2, W-2G, 1099-R and Other Withholding forms. It appeared to me that Line 71 of the California Form did not agree with Line 5 on the Schedule A. Every time TurboTax offered to fix it, the software led me to the same position and your review said everything was correct and it was rejected after two more attempts. I tried overriding the amounts in line 5 and adding into line 8, but your software would not allow that., I couldn't even print forms with the overrides. I finally printed the TurboTax solution to file for the state and then manually changed line 5 of Schedule A accompanying the State return to reflect line 71 and put the other withholding of line 8 of schedule A. I mailed in the forms.
In the past I've always felt TurboTax did a great job and I've always been pleased. This time, I'm disappointed. By the way I paid for electronic filing for California State. I'd like a refund of that amount.
What's great about it: Everything until no
What's not so great: Says everything is great but state rejects
Pros: I bought or sold investments

Difficulties handling K-1 and sales of LP units
on April 15, 2015
Posted by: Taxedtoomuch7
Difficult reconciling sale of LP units in the K-1 area and the 1099B. Looks like I got a double entry for the same sale. However, one was a net of zero with the same basis and sale proceeds. Wasn't sure how to correct this, but since it was a net of zero, I let it go. Not sure if it was something wrong in my entry.
What's great about it: TurgoTax overall is very good - liked NOT having videos this year
What's not so great: Problems with K-1 and LP unit sales
