Use of TurboTax
on April 15, 2015

Not having the forms I needed was bad. But even more upsetting was having to enter information the was already entered in previous years tax data. In particular auto expense on my rental property. Part of the irritation was the fact that the question asked (I choose to enter the data in my own order not go through the leading questions) was not the same as the question on the actual form. I used the tab indicated to see where on the actual form the data was to be used. If this is to be what I see next year I will need to consider some other tax software and this is after 30 + years of using TurboTax.
What's great about it: Was familiar with some of the idiosyncrocies from 30+ years of using Turbo Tax
What's not so great: Extreame dislike for not having the forms I was expecting.

Some confusion around home office and house rental
on April 15, 2015

I own a house that I had rented previously, then lived in for a few years, and then moved out and rented out during the last tax year. Turbotax didn't handle the situation very well. It was quite confusing how to enter the adjusted cost basis of the house (it asks for the cost basis at time of purchase, but in fact you need to use the adjusted cost basis at the time you place the house in service). Another confusing point was that it still had a tax form that only related to the previous year when I'd had business income. I had to manually delete the stray form since I couldn't figure out why it had been generated in the first place. Ultimately I was able to get it to work, but only after considerable confusion. One of these days I'll have a simple return, but life seems to keep getting in the way!
What's great about it: Great support for standard tax situations
What's not so great: Confusing way of handling a rental property placed in service during the tax year

Complicated return and it went GREAT!

I lost my second parent this year and this meant that the trusts were executed and my taxes became more complicated.. I had to enter a K-1 form for both parents and had the papers from the attorney to help. It was a bit confusing but this is where the ability to look at the actual forms really helped. It allowed me to confidently handle this situation in my taxes which will probably never happen again. It was so great not to spend much on all the tax documents when of course my taxes were increased by my capital gains!! Turbo Tax was there to support and help through this rough year and e-file with complete confidence!! Thank you Turbo Tax in this year of gain and lose!!
What's great about it: Turbo Tax walks you through the process but you can easily look at the actuel forms
What's not so great: Can not think of any!! Really!! My Tax Master for years!!

Had to triple check SchE
on April 15, 2015

After using TurboTax for 3yrs now, I think I'm going back to a tax professional next year. Here's why:
I didn't check the correct box for being an active participant for my rental property and almost missed out on thousands of $$$. After fully inputting the data, running a review to "check for common errors" and realizing my refund this year was substantially different, I printed out my returns to do a year-to-year comparison. In doing so, I realized my SchE losses didn't reflect on pg1 of my 1040s because I hadn't checked the correct box noted above.
Additionally, I converted my residence to a rental property 4yrs ago and didn't realize that I could have been including depreciation as a deduction all this time. I'm not sure what money I've missed out on for previous years - I may be filing some amended returns when tax time comes next year... and once I seek advice from a tax professional.
What's great about it: Easy data entry
What's not so great: Easy to overlook data entry
Pros: My job status changed this year (switched jobs, lost a job, got a raise or promotion)

Good, but one problem this year.

I clicked through one of the edit buttons, and it added a Schedule K-1 form that couldn't be removed (clicking/adding the form to my return was a mistake.) I expect software to be more forgiving of user error. I ultimately had to supply a bogus EIN and Corporation name (stated on form that This form was a mistake) because I couldn't get rid of the form.
Turbotax does quite a few things right. When it does something wrong, it is painful.
What's not so great: Form issue

I use TT every year and so far it's been a good tool to help navigate the totally-insane tax code. TT is pretty easy to use, and the question flow is well structured.
What's great about it: Smooth process
