Better than paying my accountant
on April 14, 2015

I started using TurboTax some years ago, then started having an Enrolled Agent prepare my taxes for a couple of years because they got a little too complicated. After they raised their rates significantly I decided to give TurboTax Premier a try as I have investments and rental property. The only tricky part was entering in the property depreciation information in last year. This year was a breeze because TurboTax carries forward from previous years all that information. In addition, downloading your stock activity from your financial services company takes most of the headache out of reporting your gains and losses. The way TurboTax walks you through the process of entering all your pertinent tax data is really straight forward and I can honestly say that I didn't scratch my head once wondering what I should enter or do next. My only gripe is that when I went back to step through and review some sections, TurboTax reset some of my selections and I had to re-select them. To make things even easier in the future I will start entering my accounting data into Quicken so that I can simply import it straight into TurboTax. I would definitely recommend giving TurboTax a try, it costs me about 4 hours of my time but saves me hundreds of dollars on tax preparation.
What's great about it: Easy to use and cost much much less than my accountant
What's not so great: Forgets some of my selections when I go back to update
Pros: I bought or sold investments

Selling car that was used for rentals
on April 15, 2015

When selling as car that was used for rental property use, it is very difficult o to understand what Turbo Tax is trying to say for inputting the fields. There are terms used for inputting into the filed that are abbreviated or acronyms and the explanation is not clear what you want. It asks for price of vehicle when bought, when sold, depreciated value, some acronym and abbreviated values, and AMT value-related questions. These need better explanation as to exactly what should be in those fields. Examples would be helpful.
Also do you really need a 1099 MISC for a rental property manager? My property managers said no and don't worry about it. He had never heard of this requirement. What if the property manager is a corporation?
What's not so great: Not easy to understand rental property instructions
Pros: I bought or sold investments

I didn't kill anyone

At least I could import my W-2 and most of my broker's data (which is why I gave up on Tax Cut). But it got completely confused on a small number of investments my broker had made overseas - every time I'd try to enter the info for one country (there were more than 20) the previous one would go away. Finally settled on Schedule A. I hope that's right.
What's great about it: Mostly worked
What's not so great: Still very frustrating

Turbo Tax Premier

Overall I give it a B+, although I used to give a A+ ... not sure exactly why but sometimes it leaves me guessing or the software leaves it up to me to take a guess in some areas and the explanations don't seem to be very comprehensive.
What's great about it: overall I love the product as I have been using for as long as I can remember
What's not so great: sometimes I feel like TurboTax leaves me hanging. I used to love the video instructions and explanations.

Very smooth, organized, and easy to understand

Example: It wouldn't take my signing date, which was the correct date, finally typed a different date, and it took it.
A very minor detail, though. Turbo Tax works amazing well, is very smooth transferring data from Fed to multiple states. It is an amazing product.
What's great about it: Walks you through step-by-step by question/answer method
What's not so great: Sometimes it is difficult to find help for little problems and one seems stuck in an endless loop trying to correct them

I just can't say enough about how it seems to anticipate every possibility.
What's great about it: It handles all the complexities in an amazing and helpful way, especially by downloading 1099s and K-1s.
What's not so great: none
Pros: I bought or sold investments
