Simple Step by Step

Excellent tax software for complicated return (business, investments, rentals, etc). Walks you through return in simplified manner.

What's not so great: Could only do one state this year. In the past could do two states.

Got it done, learned a lot

I used to think that doing my taxes with TurboTax was complicated when I had investment income to report. Now I've got K-1 forms coming in and the taxes went to a whole new level of complication. TurboTax help and the online communities that support it were able to get my questions answered and give me enough information to be able to complete the forms competently.
What's great about it: Easy to use, helpful when I had questions
What's not so great: I learned a lot of things I wish I didn't know!

Quick and inexpensive...but not flawless

Overall it was easy to use, relatively quick and inexpensive. I spent about 4 hours total to download, install, enter info and file. The downsides were the surprise that the 2014 version would no longer run on my Mac (OS X 10.6.8) and the additional surprise that the Deluxe version was no longer supporting K-1's. There were a few screen glitches when moving back and forth between pages - but thankfully none of them left me thinking that the return was messed up. Even so, it did seem less glitchy than last year's version.
What's great about it: I was able to download the application and submit my taxes within about 4 hours.
What's not so great: It was not clear that the Deluxe version would no longer suffice for a K1 until midway and bugs persist on some screens

Can Always Make the Good Better

Too many redundant "continues" in most sections. Ought to be able to skip forward easier. Ought to know us military in Ohio don't have to pay state taxes. Should say that up front, if you meet such-and-such mil criteria after saying that we are mil, be done and skip to end. Is getting much better about streamlining it, but a little ways to go.
Oh, ought to ask about any deaths or change of tax status, and tell options. My wife died in October and I found I can still file jointly this year, and as surviving widower for next two years, plus maybe HHoH after that due to my other dependents. Far as I could see, it doesn't address it. Unless maybe it will ask next year why my status changed. Didn't like it much when it kept addressing me and my wife of 44 years. Ought to ask up front if status changed and then options to address it, and then stop using that other name! Even a divorce would be painful, the death thing is real painful. Thanks!! (oops, having now done the demographics below, is even more germane.)

What's great about it: Absolutely love importing data from previous years.
What's not so great: Doesn't bring the fed over to the state very thoroughly. Should address change of marital status right up front.

one step forward, two steps back?

I've used TurboTax for years, and always been a fan. This year however, it seemed to be a real step backward. My return was not all that complicated this year, yet TT seemed to have a buggy workflow that kept repeating sections and questions I had previously answered, in some cases several times. For example, questions about my mortgage interest came up at least three times, and then at the end when it did the "check" it said it noticed my mortgage info changed from last year and took me BACK through all the same questions yet another time.
What's great about it: Did the job
What's not so great: clunky workflow, repeats questions over and over, have to pay again for state

Good Product; Used for Years

I have used TurboTax for years. I do 3 to 4 returns each year with the product and sometimes other people have used it. It is continually being updated and improved. I find it intuitive and it will lead through a return in a very detailed way if that is what you need. You can opt out of this approach to do your own thing. My returns have gotten simpler over the years but I still use this product. I really find this product to be very thorough and complete. I am impressed with its error checking capabilities and how it will guide you to correct the errors. I have used tax preparers some in the long past but I find I can do all they ever did with this product.
What's great about it: Easy to use, intuitive, good value for price, good error checking, contains all the forms I need
What's not so great: having to pay for the state return. One state should be included
