The NEW Turbotax for 2014
on April 14, 2015
Posted by: TaxPayerPatron
I have used TurboTax Premier for the last several years and have been highly satisfied but had to 'upgrade' this year - more $$ but not more functionality. I'm vaguely uncomfortable this year after being highly satisfied in previous years.
What's great about it: Easy to navigate
What's not so great: Doesn't highlight or ask about possible deductions.
Pros: I bought or sold investments

No scrolling feature
on April 14, 2015
Posted by: drbinnyboombotz
Although the product is very good and loaded with features, it is very annoying to not be able to use the scrolling arrows. On my Mac I have to drag the right edge of the page so the scroll bar appears and then I have to click on it and drag it up or down. It would be much nicer if the arrow keys were activated.
What's great about it: Overall great
What's not so great: Lack of scrolling feature is very, very annoying

Wisconsin OS (other state form)
on April 14, 2015

I filed state returns in Wisconsin, where I was living, Minnesota, where I worked, and California, where I moved later in 2014. Wisconsin tax law offers credit for income taxes paid to another state. Turbo Tax knew I paid income tax in Minnesota but did not automatically calculate credit on my Wisconsin return accordingly. This resulted in overpaying Wisconsin nearly $2000. I am now re-submitting my Wisconsin return via USPS since I previously E-filed a month ago. My original Wisconsin return is now being challenged by Wisconsin Department of Revenue for a different, but related calculation.
What's great about it: Step-by-step instructions are simple and easy to follow.
What's not so great: TurboTax neglected to credit the state tax due in Wisconsin with the state tax paid in Minnesota.
Pros: My job status changed this year (switched jobs, lost a job, got a raise or promotion), I moved

Incomplete Package

I found that my version of Turbo Tax did not provide for investment activity. I had to pay an extra $30 for Premium. Ridiculous. I'll try other tax software next year.
What's great about it: Excellent help that answered my questions
What's not so great: My version did not include investments

Canadian accounts
on April 14, 2015
Posted by: jimsatellite
My wife of 6 years has a Canadian mutual fund, RRSPs and Pension in Canada. It has improved from last year and is much clearer. Minor issue with Canadian 1099 equivalent not matching US format, but since I am middle class, entering is as if interest works.
RRSP are traditional IRA equivalents and treated that way by fed. California however wants to tax you on gains each year. I did my best guess on that one, but it is not clear on what to do about Canadian dollar gains that are actually losses when taking currency exchange into account.
What's great about it: Handling RRSP and canadian accounts is better

We screamed...you listened!

Have used TurboTax for about 18 years but planned to switch to other tax vendor in response to the changes made to TT Deluxe (deletion of Schedule C and of import of investment datal for Schedule D). I would have switched had the company response to customer "hue and cry" not been so swift and comprehensive. So...purchased Deluxe version and was amazed at how easy TT folks made it to update to premier version which included the features previously supplied in Deluxe. Thanks!!
What's great about it: easy navigation, best feature is direct import of investment data from broker
What's not so great: Every year - price hike and changes (frequently change is not improvement)
Pros: I moved, I bought or sold investments

So Easy!

Turbo Tax carries over applicable information from previous year and reminds you if you have inadvertently left something off. You are walked through each category you select and do not have to read the details about the categories that do not apply to you. There is helpful information available for each topic and there is always someone available to ask questions when needed. You can stop anywhere - anytime - and then just pick right back up when you are ready. There is also a multi-year comparison so you can see how the years compare. And one of my favorites - comparing your information against the national average.
What's great about it: Oh, so easy!
What's not so great: None
