A Few Improvements Needed
on April 14, 2015
Posted by: KoKoPuf
Probably a bit better than 2013 version but can still be frustrating.
What's great about it: Easy to use unless you encounter an unusual situation.
What's not so great: No "save as" command.

What's great about it: very thorough
What's not so great: need more information when capital gain on line 2a is checked as to if long term capital gain has already been figured

Federal + 2 States
on April 14, 2015

I have used Turbo Tax for MANY years and am a fan. However, 2014 Turbo Tax Premier for MAC seemed to have some glitches. Our taxes are probably slightly more complicate than most since we file Fed plus 2 states on a regular basis, and have, on occasion had to file 3 states, Turbo Tax has always worked well. However, a few issues were experienced with 2014 Premier for MAC.
Entries were requested for 1099-misc information at the beginning of income entries. This amount did not show up in the income summary and upon investigation, the software said that the amount might not show up since it would be placed in its proper relevant location. 1099-misc info was requested again in the relevant 'walk-through' section resulting in duplicate $ amounts. I had to go into the 'forms' to delete the first 1099- misc entry. A subsequent duplicate worksheet was generated that generated an error during 'error check' since it was not populated with information. I populated the page with information, but when the forms were examined, I found that this was an unnecessary duplicate page. I don't know if this was related to the duplicate 1099 entry.
This year was the first year that we attempted to file everything electronically and in doing so, encountered a problem. Fed return was e-filed successfully. We went to e-file the 2 state returns and received the error message to the effect that the transmission did not go through because a secure connection could not be made to the server. If the problem persisted, the returns should be printed and filed by mail. Fees for both state e-filing had already been paid. Turbo Tax and Inuit FAQs were consulted, no disk was in the drive, computer was rebooted several times without success. Radio buttons for both states had been selected and and Turbo Tax was attempting to file both state returns at the same time. There were no FAQs about filing multiple state returns nor any instructions for successful multiple state e-filing on the Turbo Tax page for e-filing within the program. Decided to try to file 1 state at a time. This approach met with success. Was happy that the e-filing of both states was ultimately successful and we didn't have to contact Turbo Tax to attempt to get a refund for failed state e-filings.
What's great about it: option for Turbo Tax to walk-through completion of forms
What's not so great: answers to some questions are not 'remembered' and must be re-answered when passing-through again for review

Not As Good As In The Past But Still Worth It
on April 14, 2015

Overall, Turbotax is still working well for us. However, there were several issues this year. First, ESPPs were not handled in a straightforward manner as in past years. You had to know that the stock sale had to be handled in a special manner. This wasted a lot of time. In addition, one of the special state tax credits couldn't be handled automatically - it required an override which meant we had to mail the state return rather than file electronically. Finally, the state interview is painful because you can't dive in anywhere you want - you have to start from the beginning every time. So, if there's a change or addition you need to make near the end of the interview, you have to go through the entire interview instead of being able to jump there in a few clicks like on the federal form. (Perhaps you can from the topics window, but I like the way you can do it when doing the federal return.)
The best part is that we had to call for help and we got a call back after only 20 minutes on April 14. And, even better, she was able to help us!
What's great about it: Most things went smoothly; Phone support was great
What's not so great: State not well done, couldn't automatically handle all state credits

Love the Ease of Use
on April 14, 2015
Posted by: BobC0450
The ease of use is the most important and helpful part of the process. I have used Turbo Tax for over 20 years and have always enjoyed the amount of time I save every year. Some of my filings have been complicated but I never had any problems with any of them.
What's great about it: Saves time. Able to choose what to work on instead of going through things I know do not apply.
What's not so great: None
Pros: I bought or sold investments

Excellent Overall, Two Annoying Problems
on April 14, 2015

The heading "2013 Balance Due on State Income Tax" confused us - and we're both PhDs!
It seems to mean, "balance still due" when it really means "state taxes you paid in 2013."
A crucial difference. We almost forgot to take the deduction for the state taxes we paid last year. Figuring out how to do so took an additional half hour.
And the "Search" function should be improved to link directly to the appropriate screen. Sometimes it goes instead to a more general category. You then have to search visually. Very annoying
Those are the only two problems we encountered with Premiere.
Cheaper than an accountant, easier than calculating by hand. Now that we know what "balance due" means, we'll see you next year.
What's great about it: No calculating, no referring back and forth, no unnecessarily detailed instructions.
What's not so great: At least one heading needs to be improved, "search" function doesn't always link precise page.

Easing The Input Worload
on April 14, 2015

My wife and I file separate returns. All our financial assets are held jointly, so many of our forms contain identical data except for the name and SSN. It would greatly ease the task of entering our data into Turbo Tax if there were a way to have the data entered on the forms by one spouse duplicated/entered on the other spouse's forms. Turbo Tax Canada already does this. Once you enter the data for a form and show an account as joint, you simply enter the percentage of your ownership of that joint account and Turbo Tax Canada then completes the same form for your spouse. You don't have to go through the process of entering data twice.

I've used TT for years and I have no reason to change. I think it is a first class product and it does what I need it to do. I cannot imagine doing my taxes without it.
What's great about it: Transfer infofrom prevous year, easy to use, import investment information from my accounts
What's not so great: No issues but return is relataively simple
Pros: My job status changed this year (switched jobs, lost a job, got a raise or promotion), I bought or sold investments
