What's great about it: easy to use
What's not so great: I had trouble with updates not successfully downloading sometimes. Other than that, it worked great.

Vastly better than doing it by hand. I especially like the way that it can download 1099's, W-2's, etc. from websites. Greatly reduces retyping error.

Turbotax needs improvements
on April 13, 2015

Printing of the forms is painful - many times the forms get cut off in the middle of the page.
Employee Stock Purchase plans - when companies are spun off, Turbotax can't calculate. It does not even allow you to enter the proper name for the company stock. Does not seem to handle the capital loss in ESP very well.
Charging for the electronic filing of the state tax forms does not make sense, after having purchased the SW
Does even allow you to e-mail the forms directly from yahoo mail.
What's great about it: It does a good job for most of the things.
What's not so great: Simple things like printing the forms or e-mailing them becomes challenging

So simple

I've used Turbo tax for over 20 years. well designed, simple to use. For the last 2 years I've had my accountant go over the taxes after I did it, and he didn't find any differences between his preparation and mine.
What's great about it: ease of use
What's not so great: sometimes once you pass by an item, going back and seeing the same questions isn't as easy
Pros: I had a baby, I bought or sold investments

Made it easier but...

I have always loved using Turbo Tax and have used it every year since 1998 (for tax year 1997). This year, I was expecting the software to let me know that I can take a credit in NJ for taxes paid to a municipality in Pennsylvania. The information was clear on my W-2 and I am wondering why Turbo Tax Premier 2014 (NJ Return) didn't catch that initially. I had to manually enter it and the credit was a substantial amount.
What's great about it: Easy to navigate to the sections you need.
What's not so great: Missed a state credit to a locality.

I'll think twice before buying Turbo Tax next year.
What's not so great: cost me more to file the same paperwork as last year.
Pros: I bought or sold investments

Weak on Foreign tax credit
on April 13, 2015

Year after year, the same weakness remains: - State tax refund and AMT calculation - Foreign tax credit input.
Intuit does not invest in improving the system on those areas. Yet, the price of the software increases.
What's great about it: Ok for regular US based income
What's not so great: Not good with foreign tax credit and AMT

The no count tax software I was using could not handle all my stock trades. Turbotax saved the day.
What's great about it: Had all the forms I needed and the process went smoothly
What's not so great: Takes a little more time than I like.
Pros: I bought or sold investments
