Taxes Simplified
on April 13, 2015
Posted by: janksta1
I like your easy to follow step by step approach, especially all the help with deductions which I could never figure out on my own. One criticism: I found out after I purchased your deluxe version that I had no investment income to report as in past years. It would have been nice to step down to a less expensive version rather than being stuck with the deluxe model which was not needed.
What's great about it: Easier than figuring it out by yourself
What's not so great: Can't downgrade version of Turbo Tax

Quick & easy taxes done with Turbo Tax
on April 13, 2015

I used to prepare my taxes by hand, so at first I did not trust Turbo Tax. As the years have gone by, I learned to trust it. I like the conveinience of efile and pay, even though it costs more to pay with a credit card.
What's great about it: Menus help me organize while I fill in the tax info.
What's not so great: Wish I could e-pay in Iillinois.
Pros: My job status changed this year (switched jobs, lost a job, got a raise or promotion), I bought or sold investments

2014 TurboTax

I had more trouble with TurboTax saving files this year than ever before and I'm not sure why. I had files disappear after spending a lot of time entering data. I had files overwrite other tax files. It was all very painful!
What's great about it: Still like the product
What's not so great: It has gotten more difficult to use every year and I don't like having to upgrade to Deluxe to do what I did before.

Third Year in a Row
on April 13, 2015

I am satisfied with the Turbo Tax returns that we have submitted for the past three years. It is very convenient that the program can load last years information into this year's returns. I double checked the state return, and apparently any glitches were corrected for Illinois.
What's great about it: Great navigation between sections and forms
What's not so great: Not aggressive in finding more deductions!
Pros: I bought or sold investments

Always easy to use

It did not calculate the eligible expenses for education to offset the income from the 529 plan reported on 1009Q. IRS says if all funds are used for the support of the student they are not taxed, but turbo tax did not allow for other expenses above what was reported on the 1098T - Call support at TT and she recommended to delete both forms and keep supporting documentation where we spent the funds.
What's great about it: walk throughs are good
What's not so great: not good for 1098T and 1099Q

Easy but not quick!

TurboTax is very easy to use and walks you through each step of the way. Switching between the Step-by-Step and the forms makes TurboTax even more effective. Most important, TurboTax is trustworthy - I've never faulted it on accuracy. TurboTax's attention to detail makes the process slow and arduous, but you know the end result will be right! Love the ability to hit the red button and call it DONE when all the reviews and checks are complete. The help is very useful but fell short on research I needed to do regarding disposing of a partnership. I had to seek external assistance. Exceptions are often where you need the most help though.
What's great about it: Structured, easy to follow
Pros: I bought or sold investments

Not as Good as last year
on April 13, 2015

The summary display of deductions and credits is not as crisp as last year's format. The net of that is that I had to scroll up and down a lot more. I prefer to see more on one screen. The summary of display of tax payments does not show dollar amounts for prior year nor amounts entered for this year. That made it hard to keep track of my entries. And, every time I finished a section, it went back to the top of the menu -- why not remember where I was and just go back there. These are minor complaints, but hey, I was disappointed! A little more usabilty testing would go a long way toward improved user interface and user satisfaction.
What's great about it: Old familiar workflow
What's not so great: Tax Payments section
Pros: I moved

Almost glitch free this year
on April 13, 2015

TurboTax has been steady for many years now. It does 99% of what you need it to do and takes a lot of the tedious arithmetic out of the task.
But there are always some glitches that pop up unexpectedly. Sometimes you can work around it and other times you just have to leave it alone and hope the dollar cost is minor.
One example: I was completing the entries for a 1099-Q disbursement from an ESA. The program wants the basis and the earnings to add up to the total value (which it should). But because the program apparently loses the actual dollar amount after rounding to the nearest dollar (e.g. $20.48 becomes $20), certain combinations of numbers will not add correctly ($20.48+2.03 computes to 20+2 or $22; but in this example the actual sum is 22.51 which misses the mark by a dollar when it rounds up to $23). So the program rejects the entry until you enter a false (inaccurate number to satisfy the program filter.
In another instance, I was entering information for a bonus that was documented on a 1099-MISC. The program used "bonus" correctly but also somehow picked up my entry from the prior year and carried it forward as a second 1099-MISC. I could not figure out how to delete this entry so left it alone because fortunately there was no dollar amount listed.
These are the kinds of anomalous quirks that always make you wonder if there are other latent errors sprinkled in other forms and worksheets. Fortunately, I haven't had anything bounce back so maybe all is well.
What's great about it: good navigation and logical structure
What's not so great: Limitations with prior year data that can't be removed
Pros: I bought or sold investments
