Losing its edge

Turbo Tax is sliding downhill. 1. Had to buy the upgraded edition to import from financial management. 2. Error correction does not help you understand what form you are in. 3. If I entered data incorrectly, very difficult to find where that data is stored 4. No undo function 5. Reviewing a section requires you re-answer all the questions (does not show your last entry) 6. Filing for states is overly expensive. Can understand paying a fair price for states, but why a separate filing fee? (considering your cost is nothing to transmit) 7. Too expensive to deduct filing fees from return.- Just don't offer it.
Overall very disappointed. Will research other tax software next year. Why stay with Turbo-tax? Extra fees are now worse than the airlines.
What's great about it: transfers last years data
What's not so great: expensive, awkward error correction, slow performance

Lead Me Through My First Multi-State Return
on April 13, 2015

I have been using TurboTax for 10 years, itemizing federal and state deductions. In 2014 my tax situation changed drastically and I put TurboTax to task.
We moved to a new state, sold a house and bought a house. I retired but still have a consulting engagement with my employer. So, I have non-resident income from the previous state. My wife and I began collecting Social Security and I began collecting a pension. Again, my tax situation changed drastically.
The amount of time of residency in each state, social security, pensions, buying and selling homes and handling multiple State Tax Returns were all handled well except for what I mentioned in "Cons" above. I expect my 2015 return to be much more simple.
What's great about it: Federal Itemized Return is Spot On as Usual!
What's not so great: It did not remember my allocations of income and deductions from one State Return to the Next
Pros: My job status changed this year (switched jobs, lost a job, got a raise or promotion), I moved

Better than doing taxes by hand but not as easy as I had hoped. I could not easily move stock transactions on the Form 8949 input worksheets to match up with my brokers 1099 data. Data uploaded from GainsKeeper seemed to be independent of any missed transactions that I added manually. For Form 6781 data does not appear to be editable. If GainsKeeper hadn't imported the data I would have never figured out how to edit it.
What's great about it: Did all the math. Organized the data on the forms
What's not so great: Editing and reclassifying stock transactions was not easy,
Pros: I bought or sold investments

Even though I have used Intuit's software for many years I still do most the the returns with the step by step option. I like the way the very uncommon sections are grouped and you are able to do a review of several sections on one page.
The one thing that I wish it would do is explain why an entry has a change to the bottom line. I several cases, some entries had major changes to the results of the return, but I had to do much to try to understand why so that I might make changes to how I should change my finances next year.
What's great about it: transfers & downloads
What's not so great: not transparent in explaining calculations, Too much cost to transmit state
Pros: My job status changed this year (switched jobs, lost a job, got a raise or promotion)

What's great about it: Pretty straightforward process, great at tracking taxes due.
What's not so great: need more info on 401k, otherwise no cons
