Another positive filing experience
on April 13, 2015

Used turbo tax for the third year running. It is very user friendly especially for someone like me who hates dealing with finances and tax filing. However with Turbo tax I'd rather file myself and have some idea of what's involved with my taxes. what I am being taxed on, what my deductions and credits are, etc. rather than paying someone to file for me and remaining ignorant of my tax situation. Was fast and easy. However did not like the extra charges for adding a second state. (I know its mentioned on the back of the software box but it still spoiled an otherwise positive filing experience)
What's great about it: Very user friendly and comprehensive. I was confident that I got the best refund and included all I needed to include fo
What's not so great: Was blind sided by having to pay an extra fee to add a second state and further by having to pay yet another fee to e-fi
Pros: My job status changed this year (switched jobs, lost a job, got a raise or promotion)

Easy Tax Return
on April 13, 2015

Once you gather all the tax relevant data it is real easy to use Turbo Tax. That does not make gathering the data, particularly on MLPs easy.
What's great about it: Really easy State Return
What's not so great: I really wanted to enter Medical Data even though it would not impact Taxes
Pros: I bought or sold investments

More difficult this year
on April 13, 2015
Posted by: ruthie45fred
I found it very difficult to download financial information from my Investment Company. The directions to create the file to download were not clear to me so I chose to enter all the information myself. In past years I used the regular Turbo Tax (not premier which I bought because the package said I needed it to download investments which ended up I couldn't use) and downloaded straight from the company and had no problems. I finally gave up and entered all info myself.
What's great about it: Convenient to enter self-typed information and have correct forms.
What's not so great: Downloads were not well explained so I didn't use them.

Foreign tax problems
on April 13, 2015

Our main income is from pensions in Canada. This year's version does not handle this situation very well. Also, the required filing forms for foreign accounts to Treasury are not present here as they were on earlier years. Last year you noted a required form to file for foreign income purposes that had to be filed only once, but no mention now of that form or whether it had been filed. All in all I would say you have done a sloppy job on this aspect of tax returns. But, the many advantages of your program make up for most of this.. The carryover aspects of continued TurboTax use are really great. I will continue to be a customer as I have for many years now.
What's great about it: 1116 and 8938 are included
What's not so great: Poor step by step procedures and miscount of continuation pages on 8939.
Pros: I bought or sold investments

Too many problems
on April 13, 2015

I have been using TurboTax for many years and this is the first time I have encountered so many problems. First the program said I over paid Medicare when I didn't,. The program did not calculate the Medicare deduction properly. On charities, the program says if you paid the same amount a number of times use various but on the review, the error is that various is not allowed any more, so why allow it? The program allows override but when you try to e-file it says you can't e-file with overrides, why not. Had problems with e-file because it didn't like the current date or any other date entered. Had to try a number of times before it would accept the date. Finally, on the New Jersey tax it mentions that you can pay the 2012 payment by e-check when it is 2014. Obviously you did not test this program very well. Hope you do beter next year because it is hard to do worse.
What's great about it: clear question
What's not so great: Too many conflicts
Pros: I bought or sold investments

Taxes Done Right
on April 13, 2015

I have used various tax software over the years to prepare my federal tax returns and end up coming back to TurboTax. The Turbo Tax software is easy to use yet detailed enough that I'm confident my taxes are prepared correctly.
What's great about it: Easy to use
What's not so great: Had to purchase the Premier version this year to get the features that were included in the Deluxe version last year
Pros: I bought or sold investments
