Big life changes
on April 13, 2015

I have been using TurboTax for over 10 years. As a military family, Turbo Tax finally adapted to our needs only a few years ago. Now as I retired from the military and had a major shift in income, Turbo Tax really left me hanging. The explanation for AMT was confusing and poorly documented. Though each year it imports from my previous year's tax, it doesn't seem to see any trends and really didn't help me understand differences in this year vs. last year.
What's great about it: Easy interface
What's not so great: Poor explanation of changes in tax status
Pros: My job status changed this year (switched jobs, lost a job, got a raise or promotion), I moved

I demanded perfection, but didn't get it

I have gotten Turbo Tax every year for over 10 years. Each year it gets better. Most years taxes are a pain, but Turbo Tax walks me through it successfully (usually I rate it 4 stars).
This year was one of the least successful (1 star). My taxes were very complicated and different from previous years. I used the community, read 3 IRS pubs, 2 Calif guidelines. Even so I am not convinced that I really got the lowest payment I could.
The steps to determine whether it was better for me to file married filing separately (MFS) or married filing joint (MFJ) were beyond the 3 days I was willing to dedicate to it. Buried in the What-if worksheet is the note that it is not accurate for community property states. Even after modifying it to what I thought was CA appropriate, it proved too difficult to figure out how to translate that into two returns. Not enough specific information on ESPPs etc.
An error in the What-if worksheet also kept me wondering about the accuracy. Our ages in columns 1 2 and 3 were correct, then on column 4 both of us were suddenly the same age.
Please continue to work to improve Turbo Tax. (I gave up on trying to reduce our taxes by over $600 with MFS and ended up filing MFJ. Not happy. I also know that after filing, we cannot go back and change MFJ to MFS.) Done for this year.
What's great about it: Easy transfer from last year; hand holding but can still peek at actual forms
What's not so great: not enough support for community property taxes
Pros: I bought or sold investments

Wow! eFile worked 1st time for a change!

Wow! For the first time ever, I was able to eFile and have the return accepted on the first try! In less than an hour, too! No re-ordering K-1's, not calls online with tech support to figure out Foreign Tax Credits. Congrats on a fine product Intuit!
Now if you could have only imported some of the figured from my Suspended Loss Carryovers from prior years (it appears it was the prior years' TT that dropped the ball...), and made it just a little more seamless to import K-1's...
What's great about it: eFile finally works!
What's not so great: MLPs still not supported cleanly. Failed to import some figures from last year's return

This is the last year I'm using Turbotax. I can input everything from my financial institutions and put in all numbers requested, but at the end it always gives me errors that I don't understand. Not worth the effort anymore.
What's great about it: Easy to use
What's not so great: Unclear with details

Taxes for Dummies
on April 13, 2015

Turbo Tax takes getting "mentally taxed" out of doing your own tax return. It is systematic, thorough and simple to use. Just gather all your end of the year statements (e.g., W-2s, 1099s, donation receipts, mortgage info, etc.) and follow the easy, step-by-step instructions. Turbo Tax walks you through the whole process one click at a time. One great feature is that it brings to your attention things you might not have thought of. I added several hundred refund dollars just by letting the system calculate my state sales tax deduction. I've used Turbo Tax for almost 20 years now and I have never been disappointed.
What's great about it: Detailed and doesn't seem to miss a thing. Great explanations.
What's not so great: None, that I can think of.

What's great about it: don't need to transfer last years results, down loaded information from stock broker
What's not so great: increased cost, needed to different programs one for kids and one for us, trouble fixing minor error
Pros: I bought or sold investments

Going Backwards

I've got a pretty simple return these days, but the need to go to premier from deluxe and the pitiful handling of ESPP transactions is distressful.
What's great about it: Does the job
What's not so great: Bumping the price for nothing extra
Pros: I bought or sold investments

it is easy to follow the step by step instructions when filing. However if you want to go back and revisit a specific area, you need to go through all steps/questions again. It is a waste of time when you just want to make one correction.
