Great except for printing
on April 12, 2015
Posted by: Abe23
I have used TurboTax for over ten years. It has always been accurate. The printing of the tax return for mailing or for a record has gotten very difficult and slow.
I also noticed this year that it assumed that I still had K-1 forms even though I had sold all of those partnership stocks in 2012.
What's great about it: Captures all the necessary tax forms
What's not so great: Printing has become more difficult over the years

Very good program. Only glitch was a company bought the mortgage company and we changed company names in mid year. No place for this info.
What's great about it: Super easy, very intuitive
What's not so great: didn't ask some questions it should/could

Taxes Stress Me Out
on April 12, 2015

Overall I like TurboTax and recommend it to others. I can't believe how many people are afraid to do their own taxes, just because they have stocks or rental property. Turbo Tax walks you through each area, step-by-step. I admit, every time I hit that final button to send my completed taxes in to the IRS I am freaking out. On one hand, I'm relieved it's over, but I'm also stressed out over all I've just been through, and I'm hoping I've done everything right, cause there's no turning back now. Kind of like childbirth....
What's great about it: Walks me through - step-by-step
What's not so great: Doesn't offer PRINT option on comparison's from prior years
Pros: My job status changed this year (switched jobs, lost a job, got a raise or promotion)

Turbo Tax got me through this tax year
on April 12, 2015

My taxes continue to become more and more complex, yet I still feel confident doing them myself with the help of Turbo Tax. I believe I am getting the maximum refund and minimizing my tax bill.
The screens used to be more user-friendly - I think this should be addressed for next year. I've been a customer more than 10 years and this year's usability doesn't match that of previous versions.
It would be great to resize the screens so I didn't have to scroll down to the "continue" button every time.
What's great about it: Thorough walk-through of all tax aspects - Fed and State
What's not so great: Not as intuitive or user-friendly as years past
Pros: I bought or sold investments

Good but needs tweaks

Like many, I was annoyed at the switch from Deluxe to Premium and appreciate that TurboTax reversed its decision for next year and is offering a refund this year. Overall, Turbotax is a good product. I had to make a correction to my 2013 return and could not find a way to update the 2014 return to reflect the amended information. There should be an easy way to do this. HSA contribution entry is not clear - difficult to find unless you know the form number.
What's great about it: Easy to navigate for basic inputs
What's not so great: HSA contribution input is not clear. No way to update prior year data if amended after start this year.

Mandatory IRA Withdrawal Hurts
on April 12, 2015

Seemed a little more cumbersome that a couple years ago. Still fairly straight forward.
What's great about it: Auto investment account posting
What's not so great: I live in Florida with no income tax. Kept forcing me into a DBA on an intangible tax form.
Pros: I bought or sold investments

Very good. I use it every year.

I can't complain too much. I've been using Turbo Tax for years and I've never had any kind of problem at all, until this year. I found two small glitches that I couldn't correct no matter what I did. First, my wife has her own consulting business. The program asks who has the business and I put my wife as the owner. For whatever reason Turbo Tax decided I was the owner. I went back and redid this section about five times, but no matter what I did, Turbo Tax insisted that I was the owner. I just left it alone and submitted my taxes. I hope the IRS doesn't care who owns the business as long as they get their money. The other glitch I found concerned my IRA. My dad had been taking money from his IRA. When he died, I inherited it and was required to continue taking money out every year. There's a place on the state form where they want to know why you are taking your money out of the IRA. Turbo Tax didn't ask me, it just said I was over 591/2 and taking money out. I tried several times to go back and find a way to tell it that I was under 591/2, but there was no way I could do that. Those were the only two things I could find wrong with the program, and as I said, I'm generally pleased with it because it makes a very difficult job much easier.
What's great about it: I always have a very complex tax return and turbo tax is great for me.
What's not so great: It's not perfect. It sometimes does what it wants to do and doesn't allow me to make changes.
Pros: I bought or sold investments

Turbo Tax Use in Texas
on April 12, 2015

All the screens in the tax interview were very easy to use and having used Turbo Tax last year made filing this year even easier. From this standpoint Turbo Tax is Great! A recommendation, I almost did not take the time to work through all the medical deduction information because I did not have enough last year and this year was much the same. That would have been a big mistake because my wife turned 65 in 2014 which meant the deduction threshold was 7.5% and not 10%. I just happened to do a little more digging. If this could be highlighted in the interview process, it might help someone.
I did not like the fact that the capital gains loss forms are a part of the Premium package. It was nice that it was free this year, but in future years if it is not included in the deluxe edition, it could be a deal breaker for me from a cost stand point. In states like Texas, I don't need the state returns, make some trade offs. The reason for a 4 star rating instead of 5 stars was due to cost and requiring the Premium Edition to complete my taxes.
Great Product, it's getting pricey though.
What's great about it: Very easy to use. All the screens where easy to read and understand. Made filing taxes alot easier
What's not so great: I didn't like the fact that capital gains losses require the premium edition.
