been using turbotax on and off for 10 years. every time i think i need an accountant, i realize they did not add value to MY return (although i'm sure they add value for others). my taxes include home sale/purchase as well as investments and children - so my tax situation is somewhat complex. easy to follow, clear questions lead to simple answers. one thing to be aware of....if something does not apply to your specific tax situation, don't enter "0", it's better to leave it blank.
What's great about it: easy to download & upgrade; easy to follow
Pros: I bought or sold investments

Made my work a lot easier

I tried many times to get an answer about how to get my free upgrade from Deluxe to Premier, with no luck. It is near the deadline to file, so I clicked on "information/assistance" and saw how to do an upgrade. I still had to furnish credit card information, even though it is to be without charge. I find this to be rather difficult to navigate, and wonder if I will have to spend more time getting the payment removed.
What's great about it: walked me through all of the steps
What's not so great: getting my free upgrade from Deluxe to Premier is still in question
Pros: I bought or sold investments

I have been doing my own taxes for almost 40 years. They've gotten much more complicated & I can honestly say I would no longer be able to do them myself if it weren't for Turbo Tax. I've been using the program for years, plan to continue as long as I can, & definitely recommend it to anyone.

Overall I really like using TurboTax software. The only downside is that some of the items, especially deductions, do not show up in the flow of the data. Some of the needed information was only requested during the final review.
What's great about it: Quick, Step-by-step instructions, Thorough,
What's not so great: Missed items
Pros: I bought or sold investments

Better than Using a Paid Preparer
on April 12, 2015

I've used a paid preparer in the past and it cost a lot and didn't result in an error-free return. Turbo Tax is good, but it does take work to achieve an error-free return (beyond the "certification" of the automated checks). It can be difficult to properly classify non-ordinary income. Usually several passes through the step-by-step interview questions is required and it's always necessary to carefully review the forms. Finally, the state product is hardly worth the money since state returns are so simple and the Turbo Tax implementations are so buggy. I never pay for state e-File and simply enter the Turbo Tax output on the state's website.
What's great about it: Fairly straight-forward, allows advanced editing of forms
What's not so great: Tedious, usually takes a few passes, state taxes problematic, charges for additional states

Tax Penalty Calculation
on April 12, 2015
Posted by: BlvJohn
from Bellevue, WA
For my situation, TurboTax calculated a tax penalty when one was not actually due. I should have been prompted to look at alternative tax penalty calculations and given the opportunity to select one of the options on Form 2210, Part II. I had to review all forms to find this option.
What's great about it: Did everything I needed except as below
What's not so great: Did not prompt for alternative calculation when determining a tax penalty was due
Pros: My job status changed this year (switched jobs, lost a job, got a raise or promotion), I bought or sold investments
