Did my mother's federal and state returns

Overall, the product worked well although it has gotten much more expensive recently. I used the Premium edition which was not necessary for my mother but was for my own returns. If not for my own, I would have done hers by hand.
What's great about it: Self-explanatory and simply to follow.
What's not so great: Had trouble finding special state schedules.
Pros: I moved

I've successfully used Turbo Tax for years and find it to be very easy to use. Especially since it fills out the current year's forms from last year's returns. Will continue to do so and recommend to my friends.
What's great about it: Easy to Use
What's not so great: None
Pros: My job status changed this year (switched jobs, lost a job, got a raise or promotion), I moved, I bought or sold investments

why change
on April 12, 2015

Why, after all these years do I need to upgrade to pro? I don't run a home office, I just have a few investments that provide K-1 forms. Hate the change and added cost. Most likely to switch software next year.
Also, my city return is not working correctly (had worked the last 10 years plus). Adding income to "resident" column, when we are non-residents, but work within the city. In the past the software would ask if this added income (capital gains) was obtained within the city. Not this year.
What's great about it: works as expected
What's not so great: had to upgrade to pro or home office. Never required that in the past 15 years. Also, my city return is not working.

I've been using turbotax for years and always think it's great. This year, I had some knew areas I had to cover and found turbotax's format of walking through very helpful in making sure I didn't miss anything. The explanations were great and I feel confident.
What's great about it: Easy to navigate with good descriptions of everything, got me through a complicated return.
Pros: My job status changed this year (switched jobs, lost a job, got a raise or promotion), I bought or sold investments

Did ok

Did ok. A couple of miscellaneous deductions I was never asked about. I had to pay back this year bonus money for which I had paid taxes in the past and which was over $3,000 and this never came up. I would have lost several thousand dollars if I had missed this.
What's great about it: Step by step
What's not so great: If you are not aware of other possible options and only follow the steps, may miss important stuff
Pros: My job status changed this year (switched jobs, lost a job, got a raise or promotion)

Pretty good

We have used Turbotax since with was called Macintax (a long time!). All the hype about the issues earlier in the year made it so we upgraded to Premier even though we didn't need to. Went smoothly, but we have a pretty straight forward situation. We plan to continue to use.
What's great about it: pretty straight forward
What's not so great: Didn't offer "save", just did it, leaving me unsure if it had saved; upgraded to Premier due to all the issues

Good Experience
on April 12, 2015

I have used Turbo Tax for many years and it does what I need it to do. Overall, it is straight forward and intuitive to use and the help generally explains things well.
A couple of cautions: 1. If you have a HSA, entering the amount from the W2 can look deceptive: it looks like your company gave you the money when you contributed it. For me, it was labeling only. The software handled it without adding to my income.
2. I had a schedule K last year, but not this year. For some reason, the software imported one and I had to jump through some hoops to delete it.
If you get into some esoteric items, like schedule K for partnerships, it can get difficult to enter these properly. (I had this situation in tax year 2013.) For me, I found the Turbo Tax help thin in this area. Also, the form I received from the firm was not very well explained . Turbo Tax can't help what information comes with my tax forms, but the filing experience was difficult for this situation.
However, for very common conditions, wages, interest, stock sales, etc. Turbo Tax works very well. The downloads worked well overall, the state tax calculated efficiently, and the software was easy to use.
What's great about it: Intuitive, user friendly
What's not so great: Handling the HSA is confusing, Import is a little buggy
