struggled through the downloads and details again

every year I think "I'm not going to use TurboTax again" but I do. This year the worst part was downloading my transaction from Fidelity only to have the downloaded information not be populated correctly in TurboTax. With 50 pages of transactions manually correcting what TurboTax should do automatically was not an option. Fortunately there is an option to mail in paper (yes, paper via snailmail!) and use just the net of the transactions. But, even then I had to go straight to the forms to enter the information correctly. Also, TurboTax insists on including acquisition date and cost basis for giving stock - neither required, or even included on the return.
What's great about it: electronic forms
What's not so great: incomplete downloads of options trading, no carry over of 2013 even after starting with 2013 TT file

Much improved from 2013

I hope this isn't premature, but this year was so much easier than last year! I'll be 100% confident when the refunds are actually processed as opposed to "pending."
What's great about it: faster, easier
What's not so great: still waiting for confirmation that taxes accepted
Pros: I bought or sold investments

Great Step-by-step Guidance
on April 11, 2015

I enjoy using TurboTax because I am quite awkward when filling out these types of forms. One of the problems I face is trying to figure out box 14 because each employer uses different initials when listing Other. There ought to be more choices because payroll is not always available when we call.
I usually list all my deductions and get all documentation ready, including checks or charges to my credit cards before starting this process. However, even after spending a lot of time carefully documenting deductions, I have to spend approximately three hours completing the filing process because some tax regulations change or I have to reread instructions. The entire tax filing process is complicated. It ought to be simplified especially for those earning less than 150K and extremely simplified for those earning under $50K.
What's great about it: Excellent guided tour throughout the process
What's not so great: Time

Change header from:
Federal Tax Due to Federal Tax Payment
"Due" ...due to you?...due to the Govt?
And, make the color representative:
Green (back to you) Red (you pay)
With a dependent(s) return, their returns may required values from the parents return. To simplify the effort, (1) ask to link the parents and dependents returns so the required information can be automatically transferred or (2) allow multiple returns to be open at the same time rather than determine the data needed, close the return, open the parents return...get the data...close the return, open the dependent return...input the data (and probably determine you need more)...and repeat the process. This was probably the most frustrating process for I had to write down the forms and line numbers I needed to find...write down the amount...go back and enter the data. The link would be from the parent to multiple dependents and also dependent linkage for the 8606 form.
The automated "data-fill" could require an acknowledgement by the parent to allow the return(s) to be linked or by highlighting/selecting the forms to link rather than assuming all are automatically linked.
What's great about it: Easy instructions, simplifies entire process
What's not so great: Tax returns are not 'linked' and some fields difficult to access to modify

Did not like the re-design of TurboTax, not necessary and made it confusing given that loyal customers were familiar with existing products. Also disappointing breaks in security. Finally disappointed that unable to file state electronically and yet paid for the state filing, would be nice if company would recognize states that did not allow e-file due to security breeches and allotted discounts accordingly.
