I may as well weld this to my 5D3

I have owned this lens for eight months and it, together with an EF 1.4x III, stay on my 5D Mark III more than 90% of the time. I absolutely love this lens, and picked it out to get a bit more reach over my EF 200 f/2.8L II (also a superb lens). The autofocus is fast, dead accurate, and the color and contrast are outstanding. With the teleconverter image quality is still excellent. I shoot wildlife, birds large and small, flying and still, turtles, dragonflies, and it handles them all superbly. The detail rendered by this lens is astonishing, and the bokeh is beautifully creamy as you would expect from a lens of this length. The image stabilization works also very well. For the price you can't beat this lens if you want fantastic quality in the 300-400mm range.
Pros: Fast auto-focus, Superior build quality, Super-sharp images

EOS EF 300mm f/4 IS

This lens is a delight to use. It's wide enough to get a good grip on the barrel but not too wide. The hood recesses into the body so there is no messing about with putting on and taking off plastic hoods, it's light weight and very well balanced. f/4 is really useful and the lens is good wide open. What I like this lens for is candid portraits, but it will also serve for sports, airshows, landscapes and as a zoo lens. Oh, I nearly forgot - this is a great macro lens for larger objects like dragonflies, so you are really getting two lenses in one. Pictures are sharp and the colors and contrast is right on the button. Recommended. Some people compare this lens with the 100-400L. Stopped down the quality/sharpness is the same. One gives you 400mm, one gives you f/4, so is better in less than ideal light.
Pros: lightweight, f/4, ease of use, macro, short focusing
Cons: none

Excellent lens for the price

This lens is a real bargain. It is a serious professional lens, but since it has been in Canon's line-up for more than a decade, it can be bought for a really nice price. The AF is actually very quiet. Many people saying that AF is loud simply mistook the noise of the old IS system for the AF noise. Turn off IS and you get a quiet lens, although you will need a support and faster shutter speed to compensate.
Image quality is excellent as you would expect from a 300mm prime lens. It's not as sharp as the 70-200mm/2.8 IS II, but perfectly fine unless you are printing wall sized prints. AF is fast and accurate. The weight difference from the 100-400 is really nice when you swing the lens around to follow birds. The extra stop of aperture is also handy.
All in all a good lens. Hope Canon would update it with a more modern version with better IS which would really make it perfect, even with the same image quality.

Great Telephoto Macro Lens
on May 19, 2009

I bought this lens because of its close focusing cabability compared to the other 300's available. I have not been disappointed. It has replaced the 180 L Macro for hand holding situations because of its light weight, IS capability, and greater working distance to subjects. Don't get me wrong, my 180 L Macro is still my go to lens for really close up work, but for general field use, this lens is super. And it is a 300 telephoto too. Wish they made a 400 or 500 with the close focusing capability this lens has. Added bonus - MSRP. A real sweet lens, with L quality, at a real sweet price.
Pros: Super-sharp images, Superior build quality, Fast auto-focus, super value

Puchased this lens a week to ten days ago. Best lens I own. The AF is quiet, IS works as it should, not as light as you'd think but, having it on a 1Dmk3 is worth its weight. functioing range is a bit short for birds unless your within 50 feet. Still searching for mtn. cats, bears, ect, but would expect to be within the capapbilities of the lens.

An older lens but still a powerhouse

Bought this a couple years ago as a lens with decent reach and with f4 it is a great value. I love the bokeh I get at f4! It has IS but it is older generation so, while it’s better than no IS, it’s not the best.
Also the AF is ok but not great and at least my copy is a bit noisy with IS on and when AF engaged. Nevertheless it does produce very good images.

I 'm a female photographer and want to encourage other women to be bold and get into the field of wildlife work. I bought this lens when I first started wildife photography in 2000. I researched for months before buying. I wanted to photograph birds particularly. I'm a stickler about sharpness so I don't settle on my equipment. I love the hood, the scratch resistant coating and the sturdiness. I was once out in the field changing lenses on a picnic table. This lens rolled off and hit the ground. I was afraid it was damaged, but it didn't suffer. I have gotten some terrific shots of bighorn sheep and larger birds. The sharpness is fantastic. You can have great success photographing small birds if you're in a blind. I built myself one and have amazing photos of mourning doves and California Quail to name a few. If I don't have my macro lens with me and I have enough working room to get back from the subject, I can get wonderful macro close-up shots of bees on sunflowers with this lens. For increased distance, add a 1.4X Canon teleconverter. I find image quality doesn't suffer. But with a 2X, slight sharpness is lost. I did my homework on this one before buying and I'm glad I did. I have never regretted this purchase. Of course, I wish the cost had been lower and once in a while the focus gets confused in a multi-subject shot, but overall this is an amazing piece of equipment. I really don't feel the need to always have the tripod with me and that's worth a lot to me. I feel this is probably one of the best fixed telephoto lenses on the market. I find Canon equipment to be awesome overall. Good luck and happy shooting!
Pros: Superior build quality, Super-sharp images

One of the best values for a telephoto. Easy to hand hold. If you can't afford to buy the big glass @ f-2.8 ; go for this. The glass is sharp, focus is fast. A friend who is an NFL photographer referred this lens to me. Good advise!
Pros: Super-sharp images, Superior build quality, Fast auto-focus, high value
