Great outdoor camera
on January 8, 2010

I am an avid outdoorsman and needed a camera rugged enough to take waterfowling, skiing, fly fishing and boating that was agile enough to fit in a pocket but could also take high resolution photos of my pursuits. This camera suits those needs nicely, and is also great for family functions, soccer games, etc.
I have found that the shutter speed is a little slow, but I am still learning to use it and have been very happy with my camera so far.

The camera is as good as any normal point-n-shoot you will find. Nice picture quality and colors. I could probably write much about the good things of this camera, but most of that has already been said. However a few things I have noticed that may help you decide are as follows;
First, it is not as big as I thought it would be. Some of the reviews made it sound like it was as large as my DSLR. It's not. If that is a concern, take a look at one yourself. I find it a very good size for me.
I do think it could have been designed a little better. Seems every time I set it down, it ends up laying on the back display. I haven't scratched it yet, but it seems very exposed. Maybe if Canon included a cheap case, I would have felt better.
I also wish canon had just put a couple of metal loops on the corners to attach a strap, instead of the custom connector. Seems to limit my options for no reason.
As it does not float, why not include a floating strap? I ended up putting a keychain float I use on my boat on the strap so I don't watch it sink to the bottom.
The only problem I have had with the camera on picture quality is the AWB on indoor shoots. It seems to bounce back and forth between a few options, and is not always right. Outdoors, no problem.
Nothing I have said should be taken as I think I made the wrong choice. Great camera, and would buy again!
Pros: good size, good pictures, good features
Cons: strap connector, expensive batteries

Lots of functionality

This is an excellent first generation underwater camera. It takes incredible underwater pictures thought it does tend to be a bit bulky. This camera takes exceptional pictures, when it's not struggling to focus. Each setting can be useful but this camera can is also simple to operate. My only complaint is that I have had repeated focus issues when taking night shots on auto. I've never had this trouble with a Canon and I assume it's because of all the glass requited to make it waterproof but I would say that on average 4/10 of my pictures come out blurry and have to be retaken and often these candid moments aren't repeated so I never capture them. So, unfortunately, I'll be switching back to a regular point and shoot until Canon figures this out.

Best Vacation Camera

I purchased this model for my trip to Maldives, and this camera complimented our fantastic trip. During the trip, we did not worry about water, humidity, sand at at all. It is very handy for water sports, and it produce nice pictures during day time, some of them even comparable to those taken by DSLR. The camera provides different modes for different occasions, and I found the beach mode quite satisfactory. It does not fit indoor or night scene, but that is common for compact digital cameras. I would say it is a little too big to fit into pocket, however, it still is the perfect vacation camera I have ever used.
Pros: waterproof, nice picture quality, easy to handle buttons
Cons: cannot fit into pocket, quite slow

Outstanding outdoor camera

This is a super shallow-water snorking and dive camera. I purchased it in November based on the professional reviews and holding one in a camera store. I was immediately amazed with the features, construction, and performance above water and took it with us on a trip to Key West, where it got wet and was used extensively whenever the big DSLR was just not practical. The performance underwater was flawless, and when used in the program mode it took sharp, color-balanced, and well exposed images of everything I aimed it at. The start-up and first shot delay were so short that I never missed a fish, diver, or scene that I wanted to capture. I just hope Canon will build an outer waterproof case to allow going to 120 feet, and/or add a deep water version soon.
Pros: very prectical
Cons: need more depth waterproofing

Good but issues

The PowerShot D10 is a good camera, but it has issues in low light and the flash is weak. I recommend this camera for outdoor use.
Pros: good outdoor pictures, tough
Cons: weak flash, odd shape

Easy to use underwater..great pictures!

I love this camera. I live in Hawaii and get fabulous underwater shots while I am snorkeling. It is easy to find the right buttons to zoom or switch to video. Most of all, I can see what I am shooting at. I have had several underwater cameras and this one beats them all. It is so good, friends that have snorkeled with me and compared their pictures to mine….went out and bought a D10 camera. I could start a D10 Camera club! I would highly recommend this camera. As any underwater camera…pay attention to the rules. Check the locking mechanisms carefully, soak in tap water to clear all sea salt. Oh, and as an added bonus, I went to France a few months ago (I only had the camera for a few weeks) and all my vacation pictures came out great. Land or see…it is great.
