Wished it hadn't failed

I love this camera. Took it to Hawaii and when first used it was awesome. It took great late night pictures and the special effects are great. Wanted the underwater part to work and it did but 2nd time in the water it filled up with water. It's dead. I double checked the battery and side covers it was dry inside but it looked like the water came in under the viewing area on the back of the camera. Had to buy another camera to finish out our vacation. (I got another Canon the PowerShot SD 1300. It's small but it got us our vacation photos. Even though it's not able to be taken in water.) With that said the D-10 its still an awesome camera. Had I known that it would leak so quickly I would have gotten a field jack for it before putting it in the water. But I wanted to trust it so I did and that was a mistake. Wished I still had it working because the pictures were wonderful that we were able to take so lesson learned. I do plan on replacing it with another D-10 but the new one wont be going in the water without a protective water field jack casing.
Pros: good battery life, Good Low-Light Performance, excellent image quality, durable, easy to use
Cons: be aware this camera can leak and get water inside, can ruin a vacation photo shoot bring a back up

Great intro to digital activities

I wanted a waterproof digital camera and the D10 fills all my expectations. First of all a detailed owners manual came with this camera that explains camera features and how to use them. With cameras getting so many features this is the most important item included with this purchase. Not only does this camera provide digital convience for checking my captured image it also provides functions that I didn't have on my previous SLR's. Light metering is one of the features that I am absolutely thrilled with. Now I can adjust between evaluative, center weighted averaging or spot metering. Other features I found that stand out are videos while sking during 14deg weather. One feature that would improve the camera is the zoom function. Being limited to only 3x optical zoom is disapointing when taking pictures of birds out on a lake. I would like to see a zoom of 10x to bring in objects across water or mountains.
Pros: Good Low-Light Performance, Nice features/settings, durable, Lightweight/Portable, water proof to 30ft
Cons: optical zoom limited

I've got 2 of 'em!

I brought daughter #1 a D10 and had to buy another for daughter #2. They love 'em and both take great pics & videos. We own kayaks and spend lots of time in the locals creeks & rivers. Love the toughness and the beautiful underwater pics. One D10 looks like it spent a tour of duty in Iraq but it has never failed. One was "lost" in the freezer for a full month and when found it took a picture right out of the freezer. It thawed out and works fine. They are worth the fancy price.
Pros: Nice features/settings, Bright LCD, Simple controls/menu, easy to use
Cons: does not float

Verticle lines on images
on August 9, 2009

Takes great pics when there are not white verticle lines on the images or videos. I've emailed canon to ask for help with the issue. I'll revise this review if they make things right. I've used canon for years without problems.
The vericle line issue occurs whenever there is something bright with a lot of contrast. Otherwise the image quality is great.
Cons: white verticle lines on images

Nice camera, GREAT service support

I bought mine in Aug 2009 and made over a thousand pictures while snorkeling in the Red Sea.
The screen is probably the best feature in this camera. It is very bright so I didn't have any problem recording videos and taking pictures. I would recommend this camera primarily as underwater camera. It is a little bit slow if you want to use it everywhere around and I wish video quality was a bit better.
Somehow I managed to let some water to get in the battery section during my recent trip to Bahamas. I mailed the camera body to the service center and was sceptically waiting for the diagnosis. I knew that warranty didn't cover water damage so I wasn't expecting to get my camera back, but apparently they found a manufacture defect. It might have been that battery compartment wasn't sealing perfectly. So miracle happened and I got a brand new D10 in the box as a replacement.
I think D10 is one of the best underwater camera in market at this point, but if I need a good camera for everyday pictures "on the land" I would probably buy a regular Canon camera but would definitely keep this one for my trips!

LCD failed 1st time out.

I bought the D10 for my son's biology class snorkling trip to Belize. The LCD failed the first time out. This was the same experience for another class mate's D10. These 2 cameras do not appear to be waterproof. I have been a loyal Canon customer for 30 years. I certainly hope they stand behind their products.

I have owned the D10 for almost a year. I purchased it to take kayaking and use for photography in heavy rain. Recently I used it while white water rafting. Extremely pleased with the results -- both digital and video.

Lots of functionality

This is an excellent first generation underwater camera. It takes incredible underwater pictures thought it does tend to be a bit bulky. This camera takes exceptional pictures, when it's not struggling to focus. Each setting can be useful but this camera can is also simple to operate. My only complaint is that I have had repeated focus issues when taking night shots on auto. I've never had this trouble with a Canon and I assume it's because of all the glass requited to make it waterproof but I would say that on average 4/10 of my pictures come out blurry and have to be retaken and often these candid moments aren't repeated so I never capture them. So, unfortunately, I'll be switching back to a regular point and shoot until Canon figures this out.
