Disappointed

Took an hour to unlock because of the stylus eraser's poor design. No sensitivity adjustment so my three year old gets frustrated when it tells him to "try again" even when I watch him trace the letters perfectly. It even takes me several attempts to get it right. There has never been an update (still on Ver 1.0) even though it was released 1.5 years ago. It leads me to think LeapFrog has abandoned support for this app.

Another great Mr. Pencil product!

We love all the Mr. Pencil apps on our LeapPad so when I saw this I knew we had to give it a try. Basically, this product is stylus for capacitive touch screens (like on iPads) that you can use to interact with the Learn to Write with Mr. Pencil app. The app is free but you will need the stylus to unlock the full game. That said, if you want to know if this would be a good app for you then download the app and check out the free trial before buying the stylus. Mr. Pencil is really comfortable to hold and the tip is nice and sturdy unlike some adult styluses I have purchased where the tips have broken. He even has an eraser that feels like a rubbery material. The body is hard plastic. Being a stylus he can also be used in any other apps for Apple device that your child likes. We especially like to use him for coloring book or drawing apps. The app itself reminds me a lot of Mr. Pencil Saves Doodleburg only in this one you are helping everyone prepare for Art Day. There are activities for learning to drawn all the letters, numbers, and basic shapes. The app does require precision like all the other Mr. Pencil games but I found this one to be just a little harder than others but that may be due to the slick glass screen of the iPad compared to plastic LeapPads. If you have other Mr. Pencil games this will be familiar territory. Overall, this is another great Mr. Pencil product. Just be careful letting your child play with your iPad!
Pros: Educational, Good for on-the-go play, Fun for kids

My 4 yr old loved using this book.

My 4 yr old daughter just received this book for her birthday. I loved the idea of her learning to write along with a story to keep her interest. She loved listening to the story and then tracing the letters in the book as part of a "game". I wish the letters had more to do with the story, but it didn't seem to bother her. The selection of games within the book includes tracing letters as well as identifying letter sounds. The pages within the book where the pen actually writes are great for practicing letters, but these are one time use pages and I think she is going to be disappointed when she has filled them all in. I gave it a lower rating for value because I do not see any replacement packs for the paper once we have used it all (if this is/becomes available my rating for this would increase). The pen needs the lines of each letter to be written in a certain order. This frustrated my daughter occasionally because a line she traced didn't count because it wasn't the line the pen wanted next. Also it seems to talk a fair amount before telling her to start writing. If she starts writing before it is done talking it doesn't always register correctly and she has to start over even if she has drawn the correct line. This can be frustrating when she is trying to learn. Overall it seems to be a good product for little ones just learning to write.
Pros: Educational, Good for on-the-go play, Fun for kids, Grows with child

Learn to write Letters . Mr. Pencil presents Doodleburg rocks. On one of the pages it has a piano and I tried it out and kids can play the keyboard with the leapreader. Besides practicing writing upper case and lower case letters. It teaches the sounds the letters make in a fun way . For example N -M -A letters the kiddos click them in any order and it plays back the fun tune using the sound the letters make. We like it so much I am thinking about buying the Learn to write numbers.
Pros: Educational, Fun for kids

the app idea is cool, but the app itself is very hard to use
I am 30 years old and don't have the patience to put the pencil exactly where the start marker is
I've had few urges to throw my ipad out of the window while trying this game because the app wouldn't recognize pencli location
this game needs to be adjusted and re-tested 1000 times by adults and kids before release to public

App has not been updated since 2013. Since the iOS update to iOS 11 it no longer runs at all. This used to be my sons favorite game and now he’s heartbroken that it’s been taken away from him.
Pros: Good for on-the-go play

My favorite part of this product is that my grandson cannot write the letters, numbers, etc. in any direction or whichever way he likes he can only do it following the direction of the arrows. My grandson is learning to write while having fun. He gets excited each time he unlocks a different game to explore. His favorite is the ones with the race car. He is also learning to properly hold the pencil these activities is helping me prepare him for kindergarten. We also have a vast collection of the learning dvd's which is helping with his learning. Thanks Leap Frog.
