This vacuum is good for carpets, but not for hard floors; the brush never stops spinning, so tiny bits of debris are launched at the operators' feet. The first few times I used the upholstry brush it worked great, but after a few months the brush stopped working, and no matter how much suction the vacuum has, the brush will not spin (even though it spins freely when I inspect it). Also, because of the way the hose wraps around the body of the vacuum, the hose clogs too easily and once it clogs it is very difficult to clear (I have had to disassemble the back of the unit to get the hose off). For the price it's not a bad unit, but if I had known how poorly it performs on hard floors, and how much work it takes to maintain the unit I would not have purchased it.
No, I would not recommend this to a friend.

I purchased this bagless upright due to the awesome reviews on consumer reports. Before using I gave my tile floor a sweep with a broom. I assembled the vacuum cleaner and went over the same rooms that I had previously swept. I was excited to see the amount of debris that was collected in the bagless container. I also own a dog that likes to sneak onto the couch when I'm away for work. This vacuum has an attachment that I use to quickly remove all the hair that he leaves behind. I've only owned this product for a couple of months... I'm hoping that I don't have the same power issues as others have had.

I love this. It clean great, has lots of attachments. I clean my rugs, hard floors, furnace, lamp shades, ceiling fans and more. We have pets and it cleans great-even pet hair. It is bagless so you have to see some dirt-so what..I don't buy bags anymore. The only down side is that the cord and hose are not as long or flexible as I need-so I unplug and replug in a new room. Overall-I love it anyway.

11 years and still working

We bought this 11 years ago because it's a Hoover, and it wasn't expensive. If you take care of it and follow the instructions for care, and use, this vacuum works great and will last a very long time. I've read reviews with complaints. And every one came down to not following instructions, or expecting more than this vacuum - and comparable models of other brands - is capable of. This is not an industrial vacuum. It is not a shop vac. It isn't going to handle xmas tree needles, gum wrappers, cellophane from cigarette packs, etc., very well. The hose is going to get clogged. If you don't use it at the proper height for the surface you are cleaning, you are not going to get good results. If you don't remove hair, string, etc., from the roller brush periodically, it will reduce its effectiveness and put strain on the belt, which will eventually cause the belt to break. In the 11 years I've owned it, I've only replaced the belt once. If you don't empty the dirt cup when contents of the dirt cup stop spinning (you can usually tell it's time because the sound it makes changes) you will end up overheating the motor, and it will die. If the sound the vac makes is higher than normal, and the dirt cup has been emptied and cleaned, you may have a clog in the hose. Check it and clear any clogs. If you don't, it will reduce suction, and fairly quickly overheat the motor, and it will die. Change the HEPA filter as the instructions specify. If you don't, it will reduce suction, and eventually overheat the motor, and it will die. Clean the washable one as directed. If you don't, it will reduce suction, and eventually overheat the motor, and it will die. The main reason for weak suction is failure to properly clean the filter assembly in the dirt cup. After emptying the dirt cup, you need to clean the cone shaped assembly with the holes in it. Every time. You can use the upholstery tool or any soft bristle brush. I actually blow mine clean with my leaf blower, then rinse it out and let it dry completely, after each whole-house vacuuming. I use the blower on the HEPA filter as well, and it prolongs the life of that filter. I bought 2 replacement HEPA filters, two foam filters, and two belts early on. I wash the foam filter with dish detergent, rinse thoroughly, and blot with a clean shop towel. I let it air dry the rest of the way on the counter, and put one of the extras in the vac before putting it away. If you maintain the dirt cup and filter assembly properly, and don't try to vacuum things you shouldn't, this vac will do a great job and last a very long time. Yes, it requires a little more upkeep than vacuums with a bag. It also does a better job than they do. So if you don't want to have to maintain it, or intend to vacuum up debris and trash, I suggest you get a shop vac, or a vacuum model intended for that use. If you just want a good vacuum for normal household use, and are willing to properly maintain it, this is an excellent choice.
