This camera is an upgrade for me from a Canon G3. The zoom lens is phenomenal - 20x is almost unheard of in digital cameras. Even though the lens has some barrel distortion at the wide end it still performs well overall and zooming in slightly removes most distortion. There is also a slight softening around the edges at full wide angle. Most of these can be fixed in PSE or similar software.
The metering and focusing systems work very well in almost all situations. The few that cause trouble would also be problematic for anything under $2k in cost. Once you learn HOW to use the camera you will find it easy to get great pictures. It is much more than a Point-n-Shoot pocket camera.
I especially like the WIDE 16x9 mode, HD movies and HDMI port. These allows me to shoot 16x9 images and HD movies, then view them on my giant HD TV in all their glory. THE best way to enjoy your camera output by far.
I am using the new NiZN rechargeable batteries from PowerGenix and they work much better than any NiMH because of the higher voltage (1.6 vs. 1.2). I wish the camera menu had a battery-type selection so you could get full use out of NiMH batteries - the camera shuts down before they are fully drained.
My only other con is poor low-light performance, but that is typical with all digital cameras - just a fact of life. I use Neat-Image to clean up noise in low light shots.
Pros: good battery life, Nice features/settings, excellent image quality, durable, Bright LCD, Simple controls/menu, easy to use, great zoom lens
Cons: Poor Low-Light Performance, no battery-type selection
I love this camera. It's replacing a Powershot Pro 1 simply because it has more pixels and the long-range zoom. I've always been impressed with the quality of Canon cameras and the SX20IS is no exception. It takes excellent quality photos. I'm going to set up my printer and make some big enlargements and we'll see how they look.
Pros: good battery life, Nice features/settings, excellent image quality, durable, Bright LCD, Lightweight/Portable, Simple controls/menu, easy to use
I like the camera, But when I buy it, The little screen have a lot of scratches... like it was broken... but i know that is not canon fault, that are an accident, maybe of the store, I dont know... but I hate that a new product has defects before you use it for first time... I hope that canon have my new or repaired camera before I go outside the city...
Pros: good battery life, Good Low-Light Performance, Nice features/settings, excellent image quality, Bright LCD, Lightweight/Portable, Simple controls/menu, easy to use
We like this camera alot. Easy to use. Feels like a real camera should. Takes excellent pictures.
Pros: good battery life, Nice features/settings, excellent image quality, durable, Bright LCD, Simple controls/menu, easy to use, have not used low-light function yet.
I have loved using my Canon A630 for a few years (I had 2 of them!) but it was acting up and I bought the SX120is to replace it before my trip to Africa next month. I love the size and feel of the camera body, as we have big hands in my family. The 3"LCD is huge and pics are very sharp. This camera has superb picture quality and it is easy to use (I am an amateur and my teenager uses it in her hobby, taking extreme close-ups to capture fine details and colors.) I noticed that it seems to be minus a couple of the settings that my A630 had but I do not miss them. I really like the fact that the most used scene settings are now on the dial and the macro function comes on automatically if you are very close to an object. The zoom is terrific! Shutter speed seems to be very quick. I love this camera! Prior to purchase, I studied others that compete but the Canon won my favor primarily for photo quality, zoom, body size, easy to use, and it was in my price range. Simply put, Canon makes a great camera!
Pros: Nice features/settings, excellent image quality, Bright LCD, Lightweight/Portable, Simple controls/menu, easy to use
I recently bought this camera for a trip to our cabin in MT. I LOVE LOVE LOVE IT! It is easy to use, but had advanced features. My mother-in-law is also going to buy one for the trip.
Pros: good battery life, Nice features/settings, excellent image quality, durable, Simple controls/menu, easy to use
got the camera about 5 months ago absolutely love it. If you are looking for a zoom camera and the hd video recorder powershot sx20 is is the way to go. the quality of the pics are very good especially videos. The battery life is also good when using rechargeable batteries. still playing with the manual setting and other functions. I am a newbie so it has kept me well busy with all the different setting that you can do with the camera.
Pros: good battery life, Good Low-Light Performance, Nice features/settings, excellent image quality, durable, Bright LCD, Lightweight/Portable, Simple controls/menu, easy to use
When I sold this on the popular auction site II lost 110 dollars on this camera because so many people are selling it on that popular auction site as used.
you are stuck carrying this around your neck and it is not light.
