Fantastic - Very satisfied with this camera!

I am in love with this camera! I was pleasantly surprised by the image quality, zoom range, features, and ease of use.
My husband even mentioned that it cost him twice the price of this camera, to purchase a lens for his SLR that would cover the same range.
My only disappointment is the built in flash range -- if it were only a cm higher it would clear the lens! Unless you have outside light, an external flash, or a light box for closeups of smaller items, these types of pictures are very dark starting at the halfway mark.
The external flashes are fine, but they are very pricey -- so if you are planning on taking close up pictures, indoors, be sure to get one.
Pros: good battery life, Nice features/settings, excellent image quality, durable, Simple controls/menu, easy to use
Cons: Missing features/settings

Bridges the Gap
on February 18, 2010

I borrowed one of these from a friend for the day, and took quite a few pictures with it. It is a step below an SLR, but a step above a point and shoot. It has a nice pop-up flash and zoom, as well as a hot shoe for the attachment of a speedlite. It works well to bridge the gap between a point and shoot and an SLR, so I would recommend it if you are on a budget, but want something better than a Point and shoot. If you want the capability of taking RAW images or switching lenses, you'll need to move up to a Rebel, but if you aren't ready to spend so much money, you should get one of these.
Pros: excellent image quality, Bright LCD, Lightweight/Portable, Simple controls/menu, easy to use
Cons: Missing features/settings

Struggling
on February 17, 2010

I have used and loved the Powershot S2 IS and S3 IS, so when I saw the SX10 IS I bought it right away, but have been struggling with it. The feature I miss most is the exposure compensation -- in the older models you could easily change the f stop by +/- 1/3 stop in the P,Tv and Av modes, but this feature is nowhere to be found on the SX 10. I also hate the wheel, as my thumb keeps banging into it. This old dog doesn't like the new tricks, but since my other two cameras have died, I'm just going to have to live with this. But I want to PLEAD for the exposure compensation to come back to being listed when the func. button is pushed.
Pros: good battery life
Cons: Missing features/settings, Poor Low-Light Performance, Heavy/Bulky, Complicated controls/menu
No, I would not recommend this to a friend.

Nice but could be better

I have owned many Canon products over the years. I have always loved the cameras. I currently own 4 canons. I must admit that i really love the versatility of the sx 20is but i was very disappointed to find that the camera doesn't offer a super fine compression or raw option. My brother owns a sx 10 is and i think that he gets slightly better images than i do with the sx 20. hopefully canon will realize that they made a mistake by not including better compression options and include it in a future firmware update. I might just go back to the sx 10.
Pros: good battery life, Nice features/settings, Simple controls/menu, easy to use
Cons: Poor image quality, Poor Low-Light Performance

Almost perfect

As an experienced photographer I do enjoy the SX20 IS, especially for family events and travel when the 7D and lens case are just too big. There is some purple fringing at the pixel level, but over all it is nice image quality for jpeg. The one thing I miss is the ability to hold filters. Any camera with that expensive of lens should be threaded for filters. I recently spent a day at Bryce Canyon national park and really missed using a polarizing filter. The S2 IS was threaded, so I don't understand that oversight on the SX20.
This is a very fun camera with an amazing lens. RAW capture with 14 bit A/D conversion and filter threads would make it just about perfect. Also, the ability to use a Canon Speedlight flash is a huge plus.
Pros: good battery life, Nice features/settings, excellent image quality, easy to use, hot shoe
Cons: no filter threads

Love this camera!!!!!

I have had several digital cameras, including a Nokia SLR, and this is the best camera by far. The zoom is amazing and the quality of the picture once it is downloaded is awesome. Easy to use, lightweight, on screen cheats tell you what you need to do to get the best shot. Only thing I have found I do not like is that the lens cover is not attached and if you clip it on the neck strap like suggested in the book it is easy to lose. I also like the way the lcd screen can be turned to the different positions. I love this camera!!!!!
Pros: good battery life, Good Low-Light Performance, Nice features/settings, excellent image quality, durable, Bright LCD, Lightweight/Portable, Simple controls/menu, easy to use
Cons: lens cover not attached

Amazing Camera

I purchased this camera for my 20 year old son as a Christmas gift, and he started shooting photos and video immediately after he opened the box. He is a 4.0 Honors student at American University, and I was concerned that my choice of camera would not meet his expectations. Not to worry. He was blown away with the performance and quality. The stills and video we shot were exceptional. Some video scenes and stills were shot with only candle light or Christmas tree bulbs illuminating the shots. The scenes looked like they were designed by a Hollywood lighting director. He photographed birds thirty yards away feeding against bright snow. Even at that distance he was able to frame the birds close up, and most impressive, he was able to expose the snow and birds perfectly in spite of the great contrast. The stereo mics were tested for voice quality from five yards away and the audio quality was excellent. The outdoor shots recorded beautiful winter cloud formations against patches of blue sky. Again, the contrast was recorded as seen by the human eye. In addition to a great close up lens, the lens is really wide and allows great group shots at close range. I cannot say enough positive comments about this camera, especially considering the amazing price. I have been shooting motion picture film, video and still photos for many years, and I cannot believe how lucky we are to have such amazing tools to shoot video and film as this camera. Thank you Canon engineers for your great work.
Pros: good battery life, Good Low-Light Performance, Nice features/settings, excellent image quality, durable, Bright LCD, Lightweight/Portable, Simple controls/menu, easy to use, great price, great image stabilization, great stereo mics
