Takes out all the smells that would. It come out with all the windows and doors open in the house! Bought 1 for house, office, parents and hobby center. Also great to use after construction to get rid of the smells!

Effective AND Quiet Air Purifier

After sitting next to a Blueair 403 at work everyday for nearly 3 years, I realized these units could help me out at home too. I work out of my boss's house and needed a filter there to help with my cat allergies. The Blueair 403 is on 24/7 in my office and my cat allergies haven't been a problem since I got the 403 there.
We live on a busy street with drafty windows and have noticed that a majority of the dust coming in looks like soot (likely car/truck exhaust). Our apartment doesn't have central air/heat, so there's no built in air circulation or basic filtration. Ever since we moved in we've noticed we're more congested, have itchy eyes, snore more, and dust builds up quickly on furniture. We ordered two Blueair 203s in hopes of having the same successful results as the larger unit did in the office. One machine is in our living room under the street facing windows, the other is in the bedroom. Its only been a few weeks now, and granted, we haven't noticed overnight/drastic results, but I do feel less congested, my eyes aren't itchy, I notice less dust on the furniture, and we seem to sleep better (i.e. less snoring/congestion). We're already thinking of adding a third unit to our living room so the whole apartment is covered.
Both the 203 and 403 cannot be heard when on the lowest setting yet still move a decent amount of air to remain effective. If you put you hand in front, you can feel it and if you put your ear next to it you can hear some air movement noise, but you have to concentrate. The 403 stays mostly quiet through the middle settings and its decently loud on the highest setting. The 203 is clearly audible on the medium setting and pretty loud on the high setting. The higher settings are loud enough to disrupt conversations, but do provide some nice white noise for blocking out city sounds.
All of the Blueair units are relatively large. The 203 is the size of an older large computer tower. The 403 and larger machines are several inches bigger in each direction. This is the only real drawback to the line, but is also what allows them to remain effective while being quiet (large filter surface area can move more air with a lower powered fan). The office one blends in pretty well since its an office and such things are expected there. The ones at home are smaller and easier to blend in- one is hiding behind a chair, the other is serving double duty as a bedside table (a place to keep the TV remote and set the phone while it charges).
I turn the units up high when we leave the house for the day, put them on the lowest setting when we're home, and turn them to the middle setting while we sleep (the white noise is very nice). To be truly effective they should be on 24/7 and have the filters replaced every six months. Its only been a few weeks with the 203's so we haven't needed to change the filters yet, but I change the 403's filter like clockwork and am always amazed at how dirty the old filter is compared to the new one going in.
I've purchased all the units from Bed Bath and Beyond (20% off coupons!) but regularly purchase filters for the 403 from Amazon. I also recently came across the Blueair Outlet website that has wonderful deals on refurbished units. Although we've only had the 203's for a few weeks, I feel confident in recommending it because of the results I've noticed so far and my long history with the 403 at work. I will update this review after 6-12 months with the 203s if anything has changed.
I highly recommend any unit from the Blueair line of products. They're expensive, but your health is worth it.

Really Very Good

Prior to purchase I spent hours researching the loudness and completeness of filtration for various air cleaner units. The Blueair 200 series is the only one I found that filters down to the smallest particles and is relatively quite in it's lowest mode of operation, important since I sleep in the same room as the unit. I also appreciate that there is only one filter which is easy to replace (I use the Smoke Stop filter - I don't smoke but I find that this filter works better to filter smells from the air such as from the kitchen while cooking). I've owned my Blueair for several years now and have recommend it to others, I breath better, especially at night while sleeping.

I have two Blueair 203 White. The first one asked my husband to buy me for my birthday 71/2 years ago. We liked it so much that we decided to buy a 2nd one 6 months later for our Christmas present to each other. They do a great
job and believe me our friends notice how nice the air is in our home. wonderful!

Effective and Quiet

We bought our Blueair last December 2013 in preparation for the coming 2014 allergy season. After a thorough research, we decided on the 203 for our bedroom because our bedroom is the one closest to the street and is more exposed to dust and pollen. What a difference Blueair made to the quality of air in our bedroom. It significantly reduced our allergy symptoms this year and made breathing so much easier. We can now sleep better and wake up without the stuffiness. The bonus is that Blueair is quiet and you can't even tell it is running. We keep ours running 24/7. We love it and is planning to buy a bigger unit for the living room.

Needs to be on wheels so it is easier to move as it is rather large and heavy. Filter is in back of unit so for best results the filter side should be in front and away from a wall. Since I have it along a wall, you never see the attractive front. However, forgetting cosmetics, the unit works great. Everyone comments on how clean and odor free my house is. I run it on lowest setting which is silent and still it works fantastically..... cuts down on dust too. I also bought a larger Blueair unit with a filter on each side and that one I love... its perfect.

Best purchase I've ever made

This is an amazing classic air purifier . I've owned it for some time and intend on purchasing another unit. The only negative is my fan motor is starting to make noises and you're unable to purchase just a new fan motor. Yet this year the smoke from forest fires has invaded the state and this little filter has kept my entire house smoke free! Totally amazing . You won't regret buying this model or this brand.
