My family and I own 4 of these little radios. Inside of the vehicles, without external antennas we have good 500 foot coverage. When we added the small Tram external antenna from Amazon for $15 each, we achieved a range of 1 – 5 miles between cars.
I recently added a small Tram external base station antenna on the house. For $30 on Amazon, it truly increased the versatility of our family communication system. Now we keep the radio on at the house and have good 3 – 6 mile coverage with this amazing little radio.
My kids ages 5 and 7, love taking the radios out in the neighborhood. And I like having direct access to them if necessary.
I would recommend investing in rechargeable batteries.

I purchased my first new CB radio (75-785) in the last 20 years and am glad I found a dependable, easy to use handheld radio. It has very simple and intuitive controls and has a strong clear signal and response. It will accompany on my trips as an additional means of communication and information. No more constant fiddling with static controls or replacement of batteries for me. The addition of facility for rechargeable batteries is a real plus. The only problem I found is that you list only the use of the old Ni-Cd batteries. I've inserted newer, and more dependable Ni-MH batteries and it seems to function very well with the more durable cells.
