Reviewing: LG 42LH50 LCD HDTV
This is our first LCD HDTV in our household. We waited a long time before started to jump on the HDTV bandwagon, partly because our tube TVs still work very well. We purchased this on sale. We were looking for something with similar specs to this set, 1080p, 120Hz, at least 50,000:1 contrast ~ this one has 70,000:1, life span of at least 50,000hrs ~ this one has 60,000hrs.
While we are familiar with the LG brand, we weren't sure of the quality (as compared to other brands such as Samsung or Song). But when we saw it at the store and compared it to others, the LG either matched or outperformed other in picture quality. And when compared also to similar features and price range, this LG was clearly the best choice!
The setup was fairly easy. Pretty much plug 'n play! This LG features NetCast which to my surprise is a really wonderful feature to have! (We found out afterward that LG is the only company to offer this type of internet/network access). To clarify, the NetCast is not full internet access but it has the Yahoo Widgets which you can check weather, stock, news, Flickrs, YouTube video as well as a couple of simple games, all while still watching TV programs. Watching Netflix thru NetCast is quite amazing! Some of the movies being streamed thru the internet looked better than my DVD on this set. We wish LG offered NetCast on other smaller sets as we can have one in the bedroom.
Originally we planned on getting a separate HTPC computer not for internet but for our media files as well as watching streaming videos and Netflix movies on this new LG HDTV but with the NetCast, we didn't have to. The only thing with this set is that it does not have built-in wireless so we had to purchase a separate wireless router (we use wireless-N for faster home network connection) and set it up as a bridge from our wireless-N base to connect to the ethernet connection on the back of the set (our wireless-N base is on other end of the house so setting up a wireless bridge made sense and is simple to setup).
The other feature we like is looking at own Picture, Music and Video files thru both USB connection AND thru our home network. This LG is able to display JPEG and MP3 files simultaneously which is a plus! Although when it comes to video files, there are so far only a limited types of files it will support (hopefully in the near future they can update this). When they do, it will also eliminate the need to buy a separate media file player.
That's about it. We're very happy with what this HDTV can do, all the wonderful features including NetCast. The sound quality is okay for our use, perhaps will upgrade to better sound system when we finally buy a BlueRay player. We currently use digital cable for our television. The picture quality is superb in our opinion. Switching from different input devices is very simple. The menus are pretty intuitive and easy to learn. We still have not have to look at the instruction manual yet. For the value, for the features, for the quality, we are really happy and proud to say that we're glad we purchased this LG 42LH50 LCD HDTV!!
Keep up the great work LG, hope you'll put that NetCast on your smaller sets and we're SOLD!!

Great TV-wish it had an audio out

This is a great TV. The internet streaming works great and so does the rest of the features. My only complaint is that I wish I could send the audio out to my audio system instead of using the built in speakers. When watching a video streamed over the internet there is no way to send the audio to my audio system like I do for everything else.

This could have been a world class TV but it is lacking a audio out for a set of headphones or earphones to watch without distribing others.

Great for internet, bad tuner

If you have cable or other source as primary input other than antenna, I would not hesitate to recommend this TV.
If you are working from an off the air antenna, the tuner in this TV is very weak, and you will find that if you are replacing a converter box or cheaper tv, you might not get as many channels. I found this to be such a problem that I am returning the TV. Most reviews don't pay attention to tuner sensitivity since so many people are not using off the air signals.
Many of the internet features are so good, just fantastic, that I tried about everything, more preamps and re-aiming antenna in order to keep the TV. It was useless.
Like all the products I have purchased from LG, the quality was good, and the features very nice. I like everything about the product except the poor performance tuner.
Pros: Quality, easy to use, Style/Design
Cons: Features/Settings

We purchased this TV a few weeks ago as a family holiday gift. I had searched long and hard, over a year, for the best feature/cost balance since money has been very tight lately, and our old TV started to fail. There were lots of good deals out there this past holiday season, but the well implemented network connectivity sealed the deal for this make and model. We had been streaming from NetFlix via computer connected to our old TV and a surround sound amplifier for several months, but LG's implementation is very impressive. It is difficult to distinguish a DVD movie connected via the Component inputs from most NetFlix movies most of the time. Occasionally there is some "flickering" that occurs on some NetFlix content, perhaps related to the way the affected content was produced, but those seem to be few and far between. Other internet services such as YouTube and Yahoo! work well as does the methods LG uses to select content without the benefit of a keyboard. Letters/number/symbols can be selected by the remote interacting with an on-screen menu. The only network feature I've had problems getting to work is the ability to view pictures stored on a computer on the same network. This is a low priority for me though, and probably requires some more tinkering with the computer's security settings. Oh, yes...this IS a TV also, and performs that function well. I use both off air and Satellite sources for TV. The off air reception is good with a mediocre antenna, and have been enjoying off air reception of HDTV. The menus are some of the best I have seen in modern electronic devices, and there is the ability to fine tune almost every aspect of the TV settings, or simply use pre-set "wizards" for most settings. Every input can have it's own settings saved, and each input can be labeled from a list to help identify the connected device. I am using the audio optical out to feed my surround amplifier, greatly simplifying the need to change inputs on the amp when changing sources. The only things I might recommend adding are an S-Video input and adding the ability to control other components from the LG remote, and these are the only reasons I didn't give 5 stars on Features. In the manual I note with interest the disclosure of Linux and open source components being used in certain functions of the TV. I don't have a Blu-Ray player yet, but am itching to see how movies look from a source with resolution that high. Overall, definitely highly recommended. We will be looking for another TV in a about a year and certainly will be looking very favorably at LG models again.

Would love to see what this TV could really do

I recently purchased a 42LH50. I researched this class of TV extensively and based on features and the reputation of LG, as well as my own experience with other LG products, I chose to purchase this TV. I got it home, fired it up and marvelled at the quality of the picture. It was incredible and the 120MHz scanning was awesome. Everything was great until the TV turned itself off after about 5 minutes. I thought maybe it was a setting that I needed to change. But then it turned itself back on. It played for a few seconds and then the image froze but the audio continued. It seemed to not respond to the remote when I tried to turn it off. However, after about 10 seconds it did turn off. I tried using the TV for a couple of days, carefully observing the behavior and reading through the manual trying to find out what setting I needed to adjust to fix this. There wasn't one. I called customer service and they advised me to unplug the TV and then hold the power button down for 40 seconds. I did this and the TV came back on and seemed to work. Then, about 30 minutes later, the image froze again. So I called back and arranged for a service technician to come over and fix it. The process for getting a home visit set up as well as the visit itself was great. It was very easy and everyone was very helpful and professional. The technician came over and replaced the computer board in the TV. He ran through some checks and everything seemed to be ok. We left the TV running after the technician left just to see what would happen. Sure enough, after about an hour, it froze again. And now, the network feature doesn't work either. It gets an address but it won't go out on the internet and get updates or connect to any of the internet services. That was the one thing that did work well before the fix and now I don't even have that. So, now it's attempt #2 to get this thing repaired. I would love to see it working and doing its thing. It has all the features I was looking for and a great picture when it doesn't lock up. I hope we can get it truely fixed this time.
Pros: Style/Design, Features/Settings
Cons: unreliable

Found this TV for a great price and it by FAR beat any other brand in terms of specs and price for this size and level of TV. It looks amazing with everything from standard def broadcasts to HD broadcasts to DVDs and video games. The USB input is great to watch home movies from my external hard drive. Great having so many open input slots. The internet connectivity is a big plus also.
Pros: Performance, Style/Design, easy to use, Features/Settings, Quality, value, number of inputs
