Great BUT...

PROS--
BD Picture Quality is AWESOME.
Internet streaming video is AWESOME.
CONS--
Physical:
Nice looking, but in this reviewer's opinion the power and eject buttons are reversed, in an odd unconventional design that removes value rather than adding.
Firmware:
All I can say is it appears no one at LG working on the internal software of this device actually has one at home:
(1) [a] Have the disc tray open, start playback in Netflix streaming video, the tray stays open. [b] Close the tray and playback stops even if no disc is in the tray.
(2) Pause the device with a Universal branded BD disc playing. After 5 minutes a Universal screen saver fires up -- impossible to resume playback. (Must turn off or eject disc, playback position is lost.)
(3) DVD & Streaming-- Pause. The longer the pause the higher the probability of lost audio on resume. Lost audio at HDMI and digital optical out. Restore audio by backing up during playback.
(4) Device has major issue on BD discs with an error and it is unable to skip the read failure and continue. Result is playback 'sticking' and trying to resolve (you can hear the drive read head reset and continue, again, and again, with no resolution.)
(5) Unable to remove "menu" features if you have no desire for the capability. Example: unable to remove "roxio" streaming playback menu item.
(6) Upconverting of DVD's can be excellent to poor as TV DVDs.
Fix the above first FOUR items and you have a device of 4/5 stars, and 5/5 for all SIX.
Pros: Performance
Cons: Features/Settings

Love it!!!!!!

Wow! What can I say. Totally worth every penny! My husband and I owned an HD DVD player and I was just completely taken with that, then I got the BD390. I have since disconnected my HD DVD and have totally fallen in love with this new player. The Netflix ability suddenly made my Netflix subscription worthwhile. I am excited to learn all my new features as I have never been able to "stream" before. I have only discovered one downfall, my husband has taken to watching YouTube videos on the big screen instead of going to his computer. I can deal.
Pros: Quality, Features/Settings, easy to use, Performance, Style/Design

BD390 rocks!

I love this player! The wireless feature is the reason I purchased it and it has been well worth it. I have never enjoyed any electronic purchase as much. It's operation is very smooth. The picture quality is outstanding. It is a beautiful player that functions well and the extra features are fantastic. I had to pay a few extra dollars to get the wireless model. I would HIGHLY recommend this to everyone thinking of buying a new player. I have streamed over 30 movies through my wireless LG BD390 in the past 3 weeks on Netflix. My whole family is in love. I have cartoon movies on instant queue for my granddaughter and hundreds ready for our viewing at any time. This is a feature loaded, quiet, beautiful, full functioning CLASSY player. Get one.

I bought this because I read that the load times were very fast. I was not dissapointed. I wanted something that would play all kinds of video and audio files and it does what I need. It also fits in with my stereo/media system.

Outstanding Value in a Blue-Ray
on January 17, 2010

I read a lot of reviews about this Blue-Ray player so, needless to say, I was excited to give it a try (which usually leads to disappointment).
Setup; Audio/Video
After receiving the unit, I went through the system setup. Video setup was straight forward and easy to complete. After setting up the Audio, I tried to use the players test tones to confirm that all of the speakers (5.1 through optical output) were working. However, I only received tones through the front and center speakers. I spent quite a bit of time trying to resolve this issue but could not get the tones to play through my rear speakers. I finally decided to put in a DVD and test the sound with a DVD. The DVD I selected had an amazing surround sound introduction, so I figured this would be a good test. Not only did the surround segment play in 5.1 surround (on all speakers) but the sound was excellent! I actually played it twice with the sound volume up higher the second time because I was so excited about the sound quality! It seems like the built in testing tones didn't work through the optical cable (a word of advice to future users).
Settings for Audio CD;
After getting the sound set up for surround 5.1, I played an audio CD which, to my disappointment, sounded awful. I went back into the audio setup again. After reading a bit online, I changed the settings to HDMI Stereo, SPDIF Pass Though, Freq 192 KHz, DRC Off, and speaker to 5.1. Once this configuration was complete the sound on an audio cd was excellent...much better than my prior DVD player.
Video Quality;
After the very successful audio test, I moved on to test the video. I played a standard DVD and used the up-convert to play at 720P (I have an older TV that does not support 1080P) and the picture quality was very good. Next, and with much anticipation, I played a blue ray DVD and, WOW, the picture was amazing (even at 720P). The image was detailed, crisp, and crystal clear on a 57" wide screen.
Wireless Setup and Use;
Connecting to the internet through the wireless setup was a breeze. The BD390 connected easily with no real issues. I registered with Netflix and immediately connected to the Netflix site and downloaded a movie. This feature worked great for instant movies. I had no issues with digital breakup or pauses due to speed.
I have also connected to CinemaNow, YouTube, and VUdu, all of which work very well.
Overall conclusion;
I have to say that this Blue-Ray player is more of a media center than standard Blue-Ray player. With all of the hype and positive reviews, my expectations were high. With that said, after working through the audio set up, I absolutely love this player. It has met or exceeded my expectations in every area. The sound is excellent, video quality is outstanding, and the wireless connection (especially Netflix) is a huge plus.
I would absolutely recommend this player to anyone who loves watching movies. If you're looking for a new Blue-Ray player, give the BD390 a try...you won't be disappointed.

First Blu-Ray Purchase
on November 13, 2009

Setting up the player and updating with new firmware was quite simple. Unfortunately since the movie industry has not fully supported Blu-Ray 1080p (16:9, 1.77 aspect ratio) format, the benefit of Blu-Ray technology has not been fully realized. Most Blu-Ray videos that I have tested have 2.35 and 1.85 aspect ratios which causes the movie to be letterboxed or ??? - very disappointing. However, this player did play the Blu-Ray DVD's well with the above caveat.
Using the menu to connect to other computers (Windows 7, Vista and XP) on my LAN was surprisingly very easy where it located all folders containing music and pictures on each computer. Selecting music by navigating folders was another pleasant surprise.
Connecting a portable Hard Drive using USB that contained music and pictures just worked without any effort.
The only negative is the limitation on NOT supporting uncompressed music files. IMHO, this weakens the option of using this player to play music contained on computers and/or portable hard drives. It did play MP3 and WMA files that were ripped at low sampling rates fine.

Cons: Features/Settings

Needs better remote
on February 12, 2010

Everything about this player is amazing except for the remote. For being such a high quality piece of equipment LG should have invested a little bit more in a better remote. This however is really just a minor thing. I love being able to stream media from my computer and the internet. I really feel that this one piece of equipment has changed my home theater more than anything else, barring the TV.
