This is a wonderful camera, the ability to zoom 10x in liveview mode is incredible for copy work. The RAW files are amazing. I must admit that if not for the HD video I would not have felt the need to buy another camera right now, so I am a little dissapointed that it is so difficult to control aperture and shutter speed.
If the 5d could use aperture priority to set the lens wide open and allow manual control of shutter speed, the iso would adjust automatically and everything would fixed.I am crossing my fingers that Canon fixes this because I don't feel that I got quite the camera that was advertised.
Pros: Superior build quality, excellent image quality, Bright LCD, easy to use
Cons: Missing features/settings, no aperture and shutterspeed control in movie mode

All good, but one drawback.

This camera is absolutely amazing. With the new video features, it's really capable of packing a punch. The only thing that is a disadvantage is that the video mode stops you from making manual adjustments. This is a huge drawback, because a lot of people are choosing this camera over more expensive professional hd camcorders. The quality of the video calms the nerves of those that are stuck in auto mode... for now. Hopefully Canon will fix this problem in a firmware update in the future.
Pros: Superior build quality, excellent image quality, Bright LCD, Simple controls/menu, Nice features/settings, quiet, Quick Start-up time, Solid Operation, easy to use, Lightweight/Portable, good battery life, really good video auality
Cons: no manual controls in video mode.

I upgraded from a 40D and find the 5D Mk II improved in almost every area, except for speed of focus and frame rate which are noticeably lower in day to day shooting. There is also a constant need to use the central auto focus point in low light and to re-frame before shooting. This is a great shame given the tremendous high ISO provided.
I formed the opinion from Canon's literature that the camera would allow aperture control in video mode. Unfortunately this is not the case which is very disappointing and greatly reduces the value of video - clearly this is an artificial restriction and I really wish Canon would enable it.
The resolution and dynamic range of still images is truly impressive as long as you process in RAW. The JPEGs really suffer at 100% due to in camera processing - soft, overworked and lacking detail. Video quality is amazing - so tantalizing if only there was fast auto focus and manual control of aperture. The internal mic is a bit of a let down as it picks up too much camera noise, but at least there is an external mic input. Shame you can't record audio notes on stills too.
Bottom line is that it comes so close to be a real classic, but falls short by teasing and not delivering on video and has sub par auto focus (for stills).
Pros: great image quality in raw mode, auto iso is very useful, fantastic video quality, great high res lcd, consistent ui with other canons, perfect marriage with 24-105l, good size and weight, build quality, lens based focus adjustment, vignetting correction
Cons: no aperture control in video mode, jpegs overworked losing detail, must focus manually in video mode, autofocus a little slow (still shots), only central autofocus point is sensitive enough, struggles to focus with strong backlighting, cf card shoots out of camera when ejected

This is an excellent camera. As a filmmaker and avid stills shooter this camera almost has it all. Very impressed, but without manual controls and the ability to shoot 24p the camera is flawed.
Pros: Superior build quality, excellent image quality, Bright LCD, Simple controls/menu, Nice features/settings, quiet, Quick Start-up time, Solid Operation, easy to use, Lightweight/Portable, good battery life
Cons: lack of manual control in movie mode, lack of 24p in movie mode

There are people on here that are able to give a detailed technical and professional review of this camera, much better than I. That being said, I love everything about this camera. Low light capabilities, features (specially with the new firmware upgrade coming up) and value is right on the money.
Pros: Nice features/settings, excellent image quality, Superior build quality

After 41 years in the profession I discovered the 5d mark 2. It is intuitive, It knows what I expect and delivers it. Hands down the best including the medium format camera from Sweden which were replaced with 2 of these cameras and zoom lenses. Canon thank you for making a camera for me.
Pros: good battery life, quiet, Nice features/settings, Quick Start-up time, excellent image quality, Superior build quality, Bright LCD, Solid Operation, Lightweight/Portable, Simple controls/menu, easy to use, amazing fat focusing

Amazing Pro Cam for Stills, Video Mode Needs Fixes
on February 21, 2009

This cam is capable of truly unbeatable images in combination with a quality L series Canon lens (either the lens that comes with the kit or you can look at other Canon primes and zooms that may suit your needs better). If you're a still photographer, whether a seasoned pro or an amateur looking to take much better shots, you will not be disappointed with this camera. If you are a videographer or filmmaker, you will definitely appreciate the ability to achieve shallow depth of field and very cinematic picture quality and color represenation in such a nice small package (as opposed to needing all kinds of 35 mm adapters and a heavy video cam). However, the wealth of manual controls you have on the still camera mode are all disabled when you switch to movie mode. It's very frustrating if you are used to a semi-professional video camera, especially in terms of being able to control audio and exposure settings. If you are willing to accept this trade-off and find work-arounds (which also add considerable complexity to what would otherwise be a simple, discreet looking set-up), then by all means, get this camera. The headaches might be well worth it. But it would be VERY NICE to see Canon offer a free firmware upgrade to people who paid good money for this camera that allows the same manual controls in photo mode to be used in video mode.
