Very Bad AF focus system
on August 24, 2012

I have had this camera for 9 months and at first it was great, sharp images and focusing was right on and got 80 to 85% good images but after 4 months, I started having focusing problems and it has gotten worse with each use. Lenses were calibrated and did all the usual checks but no matter what I did the AF focus continually gave soft or blurred shots. Didn't matter if it was AI servo or One Shot, photos came out very soft or out of focus. Even though it would tell me it was focused and took extra time to make sure, the image still came out soft or what I was focused on was blurred or soft but a different area of the image was sharp. It does a lot of back focusing I did a wedding last week and took over 600 pictures, did not even get 10% of the images as good quality, the rest although shot in raw were useless. I have read and talked to several professions about the cause and all say the AF focus has issues, well I can attest to that. I did sooo much better with my 40D and did not have this problem at all and I have the same L lens. This is the 2nd time I have taken it in for repair and I have to say although I like the camera in every other respect it's useless for me as a photographer if I can't get the majority of my images to be focused and sharp. Until Canon fixes this issue I would not recommend this camera to anyone. I think the 7D would be much better and less costly. I will be looking very closely at the 5D mark III which their AF system is apparently suppose to be much much better. I will see how it does when I get it back from repair from Canon. For the price I paid for this camera it should have a professional AF system. You can't use the outside AF points, they are useless and the Center AF point does a very nominal job after a few months of use. And only 9 AF points close together is an issue also. Until they address this issue, I would not recommend this the 5D Mark II.
Pros: good battery life, quiet, Nice features/settings, Quick Start-up time, Superior build quality, Bright LCD
Cons: Poor image quality, Heavy/Bulky, af

Canon EOS 5D II

If you like to take HDR don't buy a Canon I bought the 5D II to upgrade from my 5D. I enjoy all the new features and believe it to be of excellent quality and druability. However Canon is not providing the HDR feature with this expensive model. It does not provide a software feature that takes a number of shots with bracketed from overexposed to underexposed. HDR is a recognized enhancement process that other less expensive brand models provide. I think Canon should offer this change in a software upgrade.
Pros: good battery life, Nice features/settings, Quick Start-up time, excellent image quality, Superior build quality, Bright LCD, Solid Operation
Cons: Missing features/settings, noisy, needs hdr shutter burst

I have been using my 5D since 05 and thought it could not be topped, but I now have been using my new 5D Mark II for the past two months and well....... It's just the best
camera out there. I know there's another camera company out there, I think it starts with an "N", just can't think of it right now. They have nothing close. I love this camera......
Pros: Superior build quality, excellent image quality, Bright LCD, Simple controls/menu, Nice features/settings, quiet, Quick Start-up time, Solid Operation, easy to use, Lightweight/Portable, good battery life
Cons: just wish some of my 5d stuff would work with it.

video needs improving
on April 5, 2010

Great camera, but the 1080p video recording is extremely choppy, and essentially not usable for any important work. 29.97 fps should be fine, but for some reason, it's just doesn't record smoothly with the Digic 4 processor. Watch Canon's sample 1080p video recording made with the 5D Mark II, and see for yourself before buying. In a couple years, this feature should be great.

Great, but 24P missing
on November 25, 2008

Great camera but 24p or at least 25p Is missing. Many people buying this camera are pro and semi-pro travelling all around the world to take pictures. 30P is useless if you're shooting some clip and want to edit it in PAL. (A down conversion will result in shaky movie). Please had at least 25P and if possible 24P
Thanks
Pros: Superior build quality, excellent image quality, Bright LCD
Cons: 24p/25p missing, price
