30FPS a real problem
on March 29, 2009

I would say the video option is impressive, but the fact that it's 30P is extremely problem-some.. 30P is almost a waste of a frame-rate. It is a very awkward frame-rate which is hard to edit with, hard to incorporate into projects, and in my opinion a ridiculous choice for a frame-rate. I really would like to see this camera with 24P support, and then I would say the camera is PERFECT! But until then, I can't recommend this to anyone who wants to use its video function.
Cons: 30p no good
No, I would not recommend this to a friend.

1st DSLR

While this is my first DSLR, I chose a fairly high point of entry. With the 5D mkII, image quality is fantastic although I periodically have difficulty with focus points (this may just be me getting accustomed to the settings though). Battery life is incredible. Spending 9 hours shooting around Amsterdam, the battery was still half full. This included regular use of the LCD display. I'm glad I decided to wait on the battery grip since I get plenty of life out of a single battery. Operation is pretty intuitive. I've only taken about 900 shots, but so far, I'm confident I chose the right camera. I'm using the 24mm~105mm L, 100mm~400mm L and a Lens Baby kit. Fun times ahead!
Pros: good battery life, Nice features/settings, Quick Start-up time, excellent image quality, Superior build quality, Solid Operation, Simple controls/menu, easy to use
Cons: noisy

Black Dots all around
on December 9, 2008

I'm a very experience user with Canon and the black dot issue with this camera makes it a loser for me. Can someone please please please try and fix this overlooked issue. Third party software support for the camera is very poor. Raw converters stink when using raw files from this camera at this point in time.
Pros: Bright LCD, Simple controls/menu, easy to use, Lightweight/Portable
Cons: Missing features/settings, black dots, software support
No, I would not recommend this to a friend.

Black Dots ruin this camera
on December 12, 2008

I purchased this camera with full of expectation because of publication before release. But then I found black dots on my night photos. This is very appalling. I will change my review if the black dots fixed.
Pros: quiet, Lightweight/Portable
Cons: Poor image quality
No, I would not recommend this to a friend.

Flawed camera

As a photographer I am expect to use a camera to it's maximum potential over many years. This camera has excellent image quality as it's only selling point. I bought this for it's video function only to find a complete lack of control over the cameras video function.
I advise against buying this until canon updates the firmware to allow manual control over video.
Pros: excellent image quality, Lightweight/Portable
Cons: Poor build quality, Missing features/settings, Short battery life
No, I would not recommend this to a friend.

Great Camera
on July 21, 2010

I won't bore you with the list of good things about this camera. Instead, here is a list of things I wish this camera had:
1. I wish the auto ISO feature would allow me to choose the shutter speed and aperture, and the camera would set the ISO. The way auto ISO currently works is that I can choose the shutter speed OR the aperture. If I choose them both, the ISO is set to 400 and will not change.
2. I wish auto focus was faster and had more focus points.
3. I wish the camera had an "aperture bracketing" mode, similar to exposure bracketing. That is, I wish the camera would take 3 pictures rapidly, and change the aperture by increasing and decreasing it by one stop (without changing the exposure). This would change the depth of field and change the background bokeh.
Otherwise, everything else about this camera is excellent and it is a joy to use it.
Pros: great image quality
Cons: auto iso needs improvement

Good camera bad price

even with the high cost of 35mm full frame sensor. price is still too high for the overall quality.
unlike 7d or 50d it cannot perform in rainy weather. poor body build.
other than that, the quality of photo or any other features are good.
hope 5d mk3 would fix all problems.
Pros: good photo quality, easy user interface
Cons: price, body quality

Problems with Video
on December 15, 2008
Posted by: GD
from Baltimore, MD
The 1080p video is jittery, at a constant frequency of about once 1 every 4 sec, when played back on all computers and the screen also seems to have some sort of other distortion. The 640 x 480 seems to work fine. The video quality looks awesome otherwise. The compactflash card I am using exceeds the 8 MB/sec required threshold and the indication for buffer overflow never comes on during recording. Not sure what the problem is -- it's not usable like this.
Pros: excellent image quality, Bright LCD, Nice features/settings, good battery life
Cons: Shaky operation, hd video is jittery
No, I would not recommend this to a friend.
