Needs work to make it what it should be

After using mine for 5 months, I've found some nasty little problems. First of all, the base sensor noise is too high by design. This causes excessive noise and crosshatched banding at even ISO 100 in shadows. The ISO values are non-linear so changing from one to another gives odd and unexpected results. Also, the moire/aliasing is REALLY bad - so bad that some photos simply have to be discarded because of all the jagged edge lines. The in-camera noise reduction wipes out so much detail that I don't even use it. If you are upgrading from the conumer class cameras then this might be OK for you, but if you are a pro user that needs SHARP noiseless high quality photos at large sizes, I cannot recommend this camera at all, buy a 1ds Mark III or wait for the 1ds Mark IV and be done with it.
Pros: Superior build quality, Simple controls/menu, easy to use, Lightweight/Portable, good battery life
Cons: noisy, excessive aliasing
No, I would not recommend this to a friend.

Missing manual video control
on March 6, 2009

As photo camera it's good but Canon should add manual control in order for the Video feature to be used correctly. It's crucial that the Video can be controlled manually.
Pros: Superior build quality, excellent image quality
Cons: no manual control of video
No, I would not recommend this to a friend.

Nice Camera

All my lenses shine on this camera. The only problem I'd like to point out is that the new coating of the LCD screen seems much more prone to static charge, which always results a dusty screen. I like my older camera's screen better in this sense.
Pros: Superior build quality, excellent image quality, Bright LCD, Simple controls/menu, Nice features/settings, quiet, Quick Start-up time, Solid Operation, easy to use, Lightweight/Portable

Excellent for a city, reasonable for a deep forest

It sounds funny but I've bought 5DmkII it as a replacement for Canon 300V, and I've found it almost as convenient as 300V. I'm not a professional photographer, I simply keep a camera in belt bag, always, and make shots here and there. "Here and there" means from winter Siberia to desert in Emirates and from glider to submarine. Thus the camera should be weather-resistant. It should be relatively compact. More important, I must be absolutely sure that if I want to make a shot I'll make it in good quality in next 10 seconds or so. 300V matched all these requirements and it's is still alive after 8 years of my attempts to break it. Just perfect. 5DmkII fits in same rugged bag with same F/1.4 50mm fix, and it's still ok after the first year. So far so good.
The only problem is the use of 5DmkII with waterproof boxes. It's next to impossible to select the mode (say, switch from Av to M) and it's absolutely impossible to move on/off switch.
It would be nice to have some mode with both A and T set by hands and the auto ISO, esp. with bracketing via ISO.
Software is mostly OK, the only problem is that images are always downloaded into "My Pictures" folder but I want to keep them on my fileserver and thus I had to manually move them after every downloading.

The only thing I get frustrated with it the RAW viewing situation, even the utilities that came with the camera are a problem. Other than that the camera itself is wonderful.
Also the shutter it quite loud, sounds a bit like the cheap sound effects used in hollywood movies.
Pros: Superior build quality, excellent image quality, Bright LCD, Nice features/settings, Quick Start-up time, Solid Operation
Cons: noisy
