Don't buy this camera, yet

I owned this camera for a week and returned it when I saw black dots and heavy banding in the images. I'm glad to see that Canon has acknowledged this problem and will try to fix it. Until then I will not buy this camera and I can't recommend it either. Many have bought it and are going to accept this issue, I will not. I don't understand why anyone would buy a manufacturer's known defective product. Good luck!!

Fantastic Still Camera - NOT a video Camera!
on February 16, 2009

No doubt, this is a fantastic camera. Exceptional still images and razor sharp response. But - don't go expecting this is some magic high end video tool. It's not. Sure it shoots 1080p - and does an amazing job in many situations - BUT the 1080p video is HIGHLY compressed. Most all networks would reject the signal this camera outputs, the artifacts in low light are just a mess. Mind you, this is in HD. If you downconvert the image to Standard Def or smaller - most won't notice - so YOUTUBE people will have a ball. But Professional use - forget it. You just can't put a useable, broadcast or projection strength signal on a single CF card. - You need at least double the data and a better compression scheme.
Pros: Superior build quality, excellent image quality, Bright LCD, Quick Start-up time
Cons: extreme video compression!

Excellent Camera

So far, this is my favorite DSLR camera! It has incredible resolution and is highly affordable. It also couples the full frame CMOS sensor that is normally only found on larger professional cameras, with the standard SLR body size. Although it could use a small built in flash and some video controls, this camera is amazing.
Pros: Superior build quality, excellent image quality, Bright LCD, Simple controls/menu, Lightweight/Portable, excellent value
Cons: Missing features/settings

Needs more updating

I had my hopes high when I purchased the new 5D mark 2 but unfortunately the one I got is not producing crisp, pleasing images. On the standard setting which I normally shoot photos don't have enough contrast and saturation and when I add them through the menu it seems that camera adds too much to the point that images become unnatural. I shoot mainly weddings and can tell you that flash performance of 5Dmark2 with 580EX and 580EX II is very mediocre, it reminds of 20D that I had to overexpose the flash by +2/3 or +1. every little faint spot light in the background throws the flash off. sometimes switching to average flash metering helps but certainly 5Dmark2 flash photography is something that Canon needs to look in to a little deeper. I have to mention my Canon 50D flash performance is great so I don't know what Canon changed on 5D2. I really don't care about the video part of it, as a matter of the fact I have not even tried it and wished instead of video Canon had improved the focusing and metering system of 5D2
Pros: Bright LCD, Simple controls/menu, Nice features/settings, easy to use, good battery life, built quality is good but not superior, image quality is good but need post processing
Cons: grip is not comforable and feels too plasticky
No, I would not recommend this to a friend.

Poor Quality Item

I purchased the 5D MkII based on previous versions of Canon SLR camera's and the reviews it has recieved since it was built. I usually nerver purchase a first of a kind technology becuse of hardware and software issues so after the MKII came out I was satisfied enough to purchase this. After owing this camera I am very satisfied with the quality of the image and the features of the camera, that is if I could keep it working. It has stopped working three times since I purchased it and the only way to clear it was to remove the battery and start over. I recieved no error's from the unit and it is now currently being retuned for repair. Pretty poor for a two month old camera and at this price totaly unexceptable. I will post a new commnet once the unit has been replace or repaired.

Great stills, but missing vital video features
on March 19, 2009

I have owned half a dozen Canon cameras over the past several years, including Digital EOS SLR's, Powershots, and consumer HD camcorders. This camera beats them all in the Still Photo department.
The video features are another matter. While the motion image quality possible with this camera is amazing for this price range, the necessary basic controls over shutter, ISO, and aperture while in video mode is missing entirely. Many people are buying the other brand's manual lenses and adapters in order to compensate for the lack of manual aperture control, which is shame for people like me who have much invested already in Canon EOS lenses. Control over ISO and shutter is also vital to achieving any sort of serious video recording. This camera could be so much more, if only Canon would give us manual control over these basic features.
In the end, the video mode is a step in the right direction... but we're not quite there yet.
Pros: excellent image quality, Bright LCD, Quick Start-up time
Cons: Complicated controls/menu, Missing features/settings, little to no control over video

great upgrade for my 5D

A great upgrade to my 5D. The image quality is spectacular. The new LCD-based quick control menu system is easy to use and very efficient. The new LCD screen puts the 5D to shame. The camera tends to shut down - no response. I have to slip out the battery and insert it again to restart. I have not tested the video yet.
Pros: Superior build quality, excellent image quality, Bright LCD, Simple controls/menu, Solid Operation, easy to use
Cons: periodically goes dead
