Excellent Product

Having switched from the XXXX a7XX to the 5DMK2 recently. I am finding the AF is far superior over the XXXX. The AF controller is awkward, makes manually changing focus point hard to do on the fly. The on/off switch at the bottom area of the camera...another awkward placement, not user friendly. With that said, this body is amazing. I feel you do need to tweak your custom settings for better color and noise control (which is very good). But all cameras need this. Even with the 3.9 fps shooting in raw+jpeg mode...I capture action with ease.
I never shoot on auto anything...CR settings, custom WB, manual, set ISO...bar none worth every dime.
Now if they made this with out video, it would be a 10 in my book.
Pros: good battery life, Nice features/settings, Quick Start-up time, Superior build quality, Bright LCD, Solid Operation
Cons: noisy, on/off switch location, af selection awkward

Amazing Camera!

I've owned this camera for a little over a year now and It never ceases to deliver consistent results that continue to impress. The menus are extremely user friendly and easy to navigate - I would recommend you read the official canon manual as it does give lots of great information to first time DSLR owners about the sub menus and controls.
Fantastic video and photo quality. I have been using this camera in conjunction with the canon 70-200mm f2.8 is usm ii and sharpness/clarity are the best I've come across yet.
Absolutely recommend this camera to anyone looking for a camera to meet their needs today and going forward.
Full Frame is the future and this is a camera that delivers.
Pros: good battery life, Nice features/settings, Quick Start-up time, excellent image quality, Superior build quality, Bright LCD, Solid Operation, easy to use

No Black Dots

I am unable to duplicate the Black Sopts. I have tried all the recommended settings to try to force the issue, but have been unable to reporduce the black dots. My camera is a first day of availability camera sold in Japan.
I wonder if this is a production issue and the reason for so little of them being delivered to the customers. Maybe the people with problems could list the last five digits of their serial numbers to see if there is a correlation of black dots to the serial numbers.
Having adhoc hd movies is a great feature, like the little cameras. While it does not replace the Digital Video camera, having the ability to take mini movies anywhere is very handy.
I am looking forward to being able to use 21MP in cropping. I shoot a lot of group pictures and being able to crop out 2 or 3 sections of a single image into 4x6 prints is very useful.
Pros: Superior build quality, excellent image quality, Bright LCD, Solid Operation, hd movies!
Cons: Missing features/settings, long time to download

Best upgrade

I have the 5d markII for almost 5 month. The 5d was an upgrade from rebel xti. The picture quality were more sharp, low noise level and better depth of field. I took several close up shot with my new 70-200 L 2.8f lens. The subjects were clear and background were nicely blur. The 5d markII is the best full frame camera with the price of less than 3 grand.
Pros: good battery life, quiet, Nice features/settings, Quick Start-up time, excellent image quality, Superior build quality, Bright LCD, Solid Operation, Simple controls/menu, easy to use
Cons: Heavy/Bulky

5D Mark II Lacking the basics.

Potentially a great stills camera! For those that never want to fine tune the auto-focus manually, so as to get great photos, should buy this camera. Otherwise it's a great (hit & miss focus) stills camera. The Focus Screen that comes with the camera isn't great. Canon however provides another Focus Screen, as an accessory, to permit precise manual focus, however that one is NO good for lens slower that f/2.8 (ie. you can't use it for the light weight, long, prime lenses (eg. 300mm f/4, 400mm f/5.6 & ultra wide angle Tilt shift lens). As a positive, the center auto-focus point is very good for most of the time, but of course needs MANUAL adjustment for the rest. What a disappointment, given that it would be so easy to fix, if only another focus screen was available as an accessory!
Pros: excellent image quality, Bright LCD, Simple controls/menu, quiet, Quick Start-up time, easy to use, good battery life
Cons: available focus screens, no manual movie controls
No, I would not recommend this to a friend.

Great Images. Not Stoked on Build
on December 12, 2008

I do not have the Black spots. No matter what I do I don't get them. Image quality is great. I couldn't ask for anything more. I haven't shot video. I'm just not into it and until they narrow down this black dot deal, I'm not doing anything different than I've been doing.
My only complaints are, to few and far between focusing areas. And I have an issue with the build quality, the grip area near the CF card door and battery compartment is made up of 2 different pieces of plastic that don't interlock so snug. There fore it creeks and I can feel it shift as I squeeze it. Feels like it crack with a good bump in that area. I find this quite annoying especially for a camera of this level. My 40D has better construction in this area.
Pros: excellent image quality, Simple controls/menu, Nice features/settings, quiet, Solid Operation, easy to use
Cons: Poor build quality

great camera

The image quality is insane. even image quality at high ISO (12800 and 25600) was surprising. Noisy its is but not as noisy as expected. The video is also very good. The auto focus takes some getting used to but is not as bad as other reviews have made it seem. The only issue I have run into is that occasionally when reviewing an image in playback the playback will actually turn off and the menu keys will become unresponsive ( menu button, info button, playback, trash) cease to function. I have to turn off the camera and turn it back on for everything to work again. Has only happened a few times but is pretty frustrating. Hopefully the issue will not continue.
Pros: Superior build quality, excellent image quality, Bright LCD, Simple controls/menu, Nice features/settings, quiet, easy to use, good battery life
Cons: occasionally the menu buttons stop working

Upgraded from 30D. Better view finder, live view is great for exact focusing (tripod is mandatory!). Full frame has obvious advantages. Noise performance is about 1 - 2 stops better than 30D...I had expected better. Picture quality is very good up to ISO800. A little disappointed that focus system wasn't upgraded from the previous model, retaining f/5.6 limit for autofocus. This lags the competition. However, all-in-all, a good value.
Pros: Bright LCD, Simple controls/menu, Nice features/settings, easy to use
Cons: inferior autofocus system
