First DSLR exceeds expectations

My 35mm SLR disappeared twenty years ago and, not able to afford another one, I have made do with point-and-shoot digital cameras. They enable me to take snapshots but are limited in what they can do. I yearned for a good DSLR.
After researching various makes and models I decided on the Canon EOS 5D Mk II. There is are major differences between a SLR and a DSLR, I immediately discovered. I had a lot of learning to do — and am still learning.
The manual that comes with the camera is really good. It takes a bit of digesting and practice with the camera, but is much better than the manuals that came with 35mm cameras.
I purchased a Canon zoom lens to go with my camera and, as time and funds allow, will add some prime lenses to my kit. I am using the camera for portraits and macro photography at the moment. I expect to add architectural and street photography in the coming months.
I like the large sensor (21 mp) which gives clear and brightly colored photos. I find the clarity and brilliance of the photos I have taken absolutely amazing.
The camera is a bit heavy, compared to my SLRs, and that is taking some getting used to. It is solid and has a nice feel to it, and is comfortable to hold.
I bought this entry-level professional camera because I wanted to be able to have control over the pictures I take. I bought it sight-unseen and with little knowledge of DSLRs, although I did speak to some Canon camera users about it. It does every thing I wanted in a camera and then some. I am supremely pleased with my purchase.
Pros: excellent image quality, Superior build quality, Bright LCD, Solid Operation, Simple controls/menu, easy to use
Cons: Heavy/Bulky

Excellent camera, outstanding images, easy to use but the supplied software never works - it won't properly install and conflicts with previous cameras installed on your computer

Problem Solved

I used a 5D for a year and had problems with dust on the sensor. Purchased the 5D Mark II and that eliminated the dust problem. I didn't like the video because it was choppy but it was not the problem with the frames per second. Cannon has changed the frame count in their recent firmware update. The problem with the choppy video was the OS on my PC. A recent upgrade to the new OS eliminated the problem completely.
Pros: good battery life, Quick Start-up time, excellent image quality, Superior build quality, Bright LCD, Solid Operation, Simple controls/menu, easy to use

Even though this is my first full frame DSLR, I purchased the 5D MK2 5 months after purchesing a T3i. Must say that there is huge image quality difference. Would recommend anyone wanting a full frame DSLR to start with this one. I could have purchased the 5D MK3, but for the money the MK2 is a better choice(unless your a pro and need the extra fps).
Pros: good battery life, Nice features/settings, Quick Start-up time, excellent image quality, Superior build quality, Bright LCD, Solid Operation, Lightweight/Portable, Simple controls/menu, easy to use

I love this camera. It, along with the two lenses I own (Canon 70-200 f2.8 IS and Canon 24-70 f2.8), are quite out-of-this world. Seconds after mounting the 70-200 on my camera, I snapped a few quick photos of house plants and other misc. items and downloaded them onto my PC. Wow. Impressive. Then, after dark, I stepped outside to test out the bulb feature. A few planes flew by and left crystal clear light paths in the DSLR. I'm in heaven in Colorful Colorado.
Pros: excellent image quality, Simple controls/menu, easy to use
Cons: Heavy/Bulky

Best purchase I ever made

This is truly a superb camera and the kit 24-105 f/4L IS lens is also great. It is the best equipment purchase I've ever made in 20+ years, and I've improved my photography dramatically as a result. Regarding the video capabilities: I honestly don't shoot much video with this camera. I'd like to do more, but the reality is that various accessories are required to do it right (at the very least, good tripod head, good stereo directional mic, and maybe follow-focus.) I do also have two criticisms of this camera: First, Auto White Balance is not good enough for today's horrible interior lighting environments (vast differences in color temp and quality of CF bulbs being one of many factors.) Sure, one can shoot RAW and it's not an issue, but sometimes time and other factors mean it's easier to shoot JPEGs and it would be nice for them not to have extreme orange cast. My second "con" for this camera is that Auto ISO isn't perfect. While it's great that it's lens-sensitive, it is programmed to use too-slow shutter speeds 1/3 stop slower than 1/focal length. This makes it useless for shooting kids or other action. I'd like to be able to set both shuttler and aperture in M (e.g. 1/125 at f/8) and "float" the ISO dynamically. Optimistically, perhaps such an enhancement could happen via a firmware update.
