EOS 5D Mark II is state of the art, and then some

In my world, this camera achieves a level of performance and quality that eclipses my needs and will for some time to come. At last, a full-frame sensor with a balance of high megapixels and high ISO abilities. By any measure (and there are reviews aplenty out there on Internet by the industry's best/brightest minds), this combination is a winner that other DSLRs only aspire to-particularly at this price point. The end result is only limited by the photographer's skill set. In saying this I simply don't know, beyond a more advanced focusing system, what could be needed in this gem, for any serious photographer not needing to work in a typhoon or the Artic regions.
Great job, Canon.
Pros: Superior build quality, excellent image quality, Bright LCD, Simple controls/menu, Nice features/settings, good battery life, great iso range with minimal noise!
Cons: more advanced/faster focus system would be great!, faster burst rate would be nice...but as is ok

Fantastic Camera

Purchased the EOS 5D Mark II two weeks ago, and I have no regrets. This camera is fantastic. My first DSLR was the EOS 5D which I still use and consider a great full frame camera, but the Mark II is a big step ahead of its predecessor. The extra pixels and the new Digic 4 processor produces exellent images, and the menue on the camera is user friendly and easy to navigate. I will continue to use my 5D, but it will be the back up to my Mark II. Oh yes, the video is also great and a plus to this camera.
Pros: Superior build quality, excellent image quality, Bright LCD, Simple controls/menu, Nice features/settings, quiet, Quick Start-up time, Solid Operation, easy to use, good battery life

This being my first digital SLR I am just blown away; it beats film all to pieces. I was a little irritated that my old 430EZ flash that I used on my 1N won’t work with this camera, it over exposes images by at least 2 stops, so there is a new flash in my future. However, I'm taking tons of pictures without the flash, even indoors as 3200 ISO pictures look unbelievable and I'm hand holding at 4.0 - 1/40 and 1/25 of a second with pretty darn good results. I'm not shooting anything professional so these images are more than good enough for me not to mention pictures look better without direct flash anyway. Live View was a bit of a disappointment for me and I will only use it when I am unable to easily put my eye to the view finder. I don’t care for the way you have to focus the camera in Live View. Otherwise I just love the camera. On a side note I did try to recreate the black dot phenomenon by taking pictures of Christmas lights but wasn’t able to, it’s a moot point as Canon has released a firmware fix. Love mine!
Pros: excellent image quality, Bright LCD, easy to use, Lightweight/Portable
Cons: dont care for live view focusing

Almost Perfect

I have to say for what it is the 5D Mark II is a game changer. I've been able to get the same results with a 3 lbs. camera (body and lens) as I was able to get with a 45 lbs. rig. My only complaint is no 24 fps. I have resort to conforming the 30 fps to 24 fps in cinema tools then using compressor's built in optical flow technology to get a smooth 24 fps in real time. I would appreciate it if Canon would add 24 fps, they would experience a surge in sells. The 5D Mark II is a game changer but not offering 24 fps is a deal breaker.
Pros: Superior build quality, excellent image quality, Bright LCD
Cons: Missing features/settings, no 24 fps

I'd been waiting for the 5DmkII and it turned out to be even better than I'd expected. I was previously using a 5D classic and 1DmkIII and the instant attraction was the video and resolution.
After nearly 2.5 years of owning the 5DmkII I am still delighted with it. It is reliable and has a good dynamic range.
Pros: good battery life, quiet, Nice features/settings, Quick Start-up time, excellent image quality, Superior build quality, Bright LCD, Solid Operation, Lightweight/Portable, Simple controls/menu, easy to use, video quality, dynamic range

I have had this camera for 2 years, it is used on a daily basis along with a 5D, 40D and a 30D. I write to commend Canon on this camera because it is a positive "workhorse" and the body I most use. I shoot a variety of assignments from weddings to documentary, journalistic work. My equipment is used in all weather and lighting conditions. I shoot much of my work with available light - high ISO is where this camera excels - a "sweet spot" is at about 2500 though I get excellent results up to 6400 using all "L" lenses. Color converted to B/W is frequently used as many clients are requesting B/W work. Canon battery grips are used on all of my cameras - been using Canon since the early 1990's - excellent equipment!
Pros: good battery life, quiet, Nice features/settings, Quick Start-up time, excellent image quality, Superior build quality, Bright LCD, Solid Operation, Lightweight/Portable, Simple controls/menu, easy to use

Black Dots in Highlight
on December 31, 2008

I currently own a 5D and was very excited to hear that they came out with the updated 5d Mark II.
I experimented with the new options with the camera & was satisfied then looked at the quality of the picture taken. After inspecting the picture I noticed a black void area around the highlights in the eyes, you can also see it around Christmas tree lights. I don't know what this is but it needs to be fixed and the people who do have this camera malfunction should be able to return their current 5D Mark II to receive a fixed 5D Mark II without the black dot . Canon please fix this oversight. We all the love the camera, but don't understand where the missing data information is coming from.
Pros: Nice features/settings, Quick Start-up time, Solid Operation
Cons: Poor image quality
No, I would not recommend this to a friend.
