Good working camera

Rec'd this camera Friday morning, had an all day "event" assignment on Saturday, shot over a thousand images. The other cameras used on the assignment were a 5D and a 40D, all with the battery grips attached, flash and natural light. About 550 images shot with the 5DII were with available light at high ISO. Our older "L" lenses work well as does the new 24-70 "L" with all of the cameras mentioned.
Sharp, crisp, noise free images produced, especially with the older 80-200 f2.8 L lens. I expect to produce 11x17 and 13x19 prints for the client that will be outstanding. The only drawback I find at this time is the fps, yet it appears faster than the 5D.
Pros: Superior build quality, excellent image quality, Bright LCD, Simple controls/menu, Nice features/settings, quiet, Quick Start-up time, Solid Operation, easy to use, Lightweight/Portable, good battery life

Stuck Pixel in Video
on December 7, 2008

So far I have enjoyed the camera. I recently acquired the proper HDMI cable, and viewed some videos on a large HD screen, only to see one stuck pixel shining bright right above center. Very disappointing, as it is very visible. I wish somehow they could test for this before letting it leave the factory. The capabilities of the camera are many, I look forward to learning all that my new Canon can do.
Pros: Superior build quality, excellent image quality, Bright LCD, Simple controls/menu, Nice features/settings, Quick Start-up time, Solid Operation, easy to use, video mode!
Cons: stuck pixel in video mode!

Excellent Value in a High End Camera
on June 10, 2009

I purchased this camera to replace my 5D as a backup camera to my 1D/1Ds MkIII cameras and got to put it to the test last month when the shutter faIled in my Ds. The image quality from this camera is every bit as good as the Ds but, as expected of a camera in this price range, the handling, ergonomics and build quality don't measure up to a top level body. Although it is not as responsive as the 1 series cameras, it comes as such an incredible value that it is hard to find anything out there to which it can be compared. I think it is better suited for portraiture and landscapes than sports and wildlife but however one uses it, good solid performance at a reasonable cost can be expected.
Pros: excellent image quality, Bright LCD, Solid Operation, easy to use, Lightweight/Portable
Cons: noisy

Excellent Wedding Camera
on February 9, 2011

I only shoot a few weddings a year but was frustrated with the high ISO performance of my aging 20D. Remember, no matter what a bride pays for her photographer, or what little she claims to want while negotiating a fee, she, and everyone else at the wedding will expect the highest quality photography available. And, since the photographer is the only person not allowed to use flash at a wedding, a camera that can perform well at higher ISO's are a must. And for that, the 5DMKII delivers.
However, be aware of a few things. First, the body of the 5D is not as large as are it's more expensive siblings. And since you're likely to be attaching the heavier L series lenses, you'll need to purchase a battery grip for balance, not to mention the other advantages. Having shot with battery grips for the past few years, I was surprised how small the 5D body felt when attached to an L. The grip provides a surprising amount of balance to the overall camera with larger lenses as well as vertical shooting capabilities.
Second, at first you might not think that you'll use the video functions in the 5D. However, time may prove you wrong. So you'll need a third party LCD screen eyepiece. And while you're at it, consider a Rode shotgun and possibly a Zoom portable digital recorder to give you the pro level sound recordings that better match the high quality visuals you can achieve with this camera.
And third, this camera shoots big files. I know, so what? But I was surprised what a difference that makes in storage and delivery to clients. Also, since I process every photo I shoot, the size of the resulting images can be quite large and DVDs or multiple CDs may be required where a single CD used to be sufficient. But hey, get used to it. That's the future anyhow.
But I love my 5D and can happily recommend it.
Pros: good battery life, Nice features/settings, excellent image quality, Superior build quality, Bright LCD, Solid Operation, Simple controls/menu

One Big Problem
on May 25, 2010

I have Used Canon systems for 35mm for many years including going digital some years back and have several bodies and a number of lenses in the bags I carry with me at all times. I have always had excellent results from both the camera's and lenses, and still do. I also carry a Canon XL-1s for video work, or, I should say, I used to. Now that I include a 5D Mark II I only add the XL-1s when I know the conditions will require it. I am a fire department photographer and on a pager 24X7. When a fire or crash call comes in I am dispatched with the engine companies. My work involves everything from documenting the fire scene and firefighting activities to forensic photos when needed. My one gripe with the 5D Mark II is that the Mode Dial lacks a lock feature and that little omission is my biggest source of grief. I often hit a fire scene in a hurry, pulling on my protective gear, pulling out cameras and going to work. Way too often I find that in the hussle of the action one of the cameras has rubbed against something that changed the setting without me noticing. Sometimes the result is not a disaster. Other times it is. And while this may not be a problem for a studio or landscape photographer, a working fireground is another matter entirely. If I could have just one modification to this great camera it would be to add a lock to the Mode Dial.
Pros: quiet, Nice features/settings, Quick Start-up time, excellent image quality, Superior build quality, Bright LCD, Solid Operation, Lightweight/Portable

What more can I say... This camera was made by the gods themselves and sent down from the heavens above. But seriously this camera is simply perfect all around. If you are a pro or a beginner it can fulfill all of your expectations. It has all the features of a professional camera and you can record in full 1080P HD video.
Pros: Superior build quality, excellent image quality, Bright LCD, Simple controls/menu, Nice features/settings, quiet, Quick Start-up time, Solid Operation, easy to use, Lightweight/Portable, good battery life
Cons: not ef-s compatable

What do you want?

I have only had this for 3 months and my previous camera was the 10D, but Im not sure what the whining on the video is about. Sure it has NO CONTROLS!, but so what. One evening I looked out my back window and the sunset was so beautyful that it looks like the sky was on fire. I quick got my camera as the light was fading by the second (literally) and snapped the photo in full auto and them took several manual setting shots. This turned out to be my BEST sunset shot to date. I would have never of gotten this shot with my 10D. Yes I know it is quite old, but my buddies who have the newer models cannot get the shot I took. The auto pict took at 800 ISO and 1/50 without artifacting. The other difference is that I have yet to get a blowout with the flash. Yes I know that sounds like a personal thing, but I have a limited budget and a mid-range flash.
If you want a REALLY good still camera that has video as a bonus get this camera! If you want a great video camera wait to see if Canon gives us a firmware upgrade or buy a real HD video camera.
OBTW this does not use the same battery type as the 5D. This is new and I cannot find one in stock. This is a VERY SMALL price to pay for such a great (still) camera.
Pros: excellent image quality, quiet, good battery life
Cons: new battery type, cannot buy new battery type

Great Camera, but really, the lack of 24p and manual control in video mode hinders this "could-have-been" masterpiece. Image is amazing!
Pros: Superior build quality, excellent image quality, Bright LCD, Simple controls/menu, quiet, Quick Start-up time, Solid Operation, easy to use
Cons: Dim LCD, Complicated controls/menu, Missing features/settings, Shaky operation
