5D Mark II Rocks
on December 9, 2008

Upgraded from a 40D and this is one fantastic camera, beautiful image quality that just pops! LOVE going full-frame.
Only issue I'm having is the "black spots" problem where to the right of any very small lights, you'll see a small back dot. Pictures of Christmas lights at 100% show this to be quite obvious -- Canon needs to address! At regular viewing sizes, you wouldn't notice it, but it's not working properly.
LOVE everything else!
Pros: Superior build quality, excellent image quality, Bright LCD, Simple controls/menu, Nice features/settings, quiet, Quick Start-up time, Solid Operation, easy to use, Lightweight/Portable, good battery life
Cons: black dot image problem

Canon EOS 5D MkII
on March 26, 2011

I use 5D MkII and 50D. I also have old 20D. I truly appreciate full-frame sensor when I use with wider angle lenses, and love to play with DOF. I also appreciate a larger viewfinder. It produces superior images and noise is fairly low that I find myself using ISO 1250 - 2500 easily in low light situation. I agree that AF system is old and 9 AF point is too close together in my opinion. Also 3.9 fps continuous shooting is a bit slow but I guess these things are trade off from using the same sensor as 1Ds MkIII with much lower price. I never used HD video feature. I personally wished that Canon spent money for better still camera feature such as a newer focus system than adding a video system.
Pros: excellent image quality, Bright LCD, Lightweight/Portable, low noise
Cons: old focus system

A significant advancement in the EOS line-up
on December 3, 2008

The Canon EOS 5D Mark II combines high resolution with high ISO to make this one of the best digital SLR's ever. Yes it comes at a price, but significantly less than previous full-frame models.
The ability to shoot at ISO 1600, 3200 with very little noise is so important and not just in lower light. It provides the ability to use a small aperture (f/16, f/22) while keeping shutter speeds high enough to capture motion (birds taking off, etc.) With older DSLR's that often get noisy at ISO 400 or 800 - you were forced to keep aperture's at f/5.6 or f/8 in order to keep shutter speeds in an acceptable range.
Video mode is remarkable especially for night scenes. This camera BEGS to be used on a tripod for video. It also forces you to think out your video ahead of time since you won't want to manually zoom while recording. The 24-105mm IS lens is great but you really cannot zoom fluidly with it. So instead - shoot your wide establishing shot. Pause. Frame your detail shot, focus and start recording. This is how most pro's do it anyway and it just might force you to become a better videographer. Your audience will thank you as well.
All in all, I am thrilled to have upgraded from a Rebel XTi to the 5D Mark II. Awesome!
Pros: Superior build quality, excellent image quality, Bright LCD, Nice features/settings, quiet, Quick Start-up time, Solid Operation, easy to use, Lightweight/Portable, good battery life

Weather resistance claim misleading
on March 26, 2010
Posted by: Deborah
This is by far the best camera I've ever owned and recommend it in a heartbeat to anyone looking to purchase a DSLR. Images have unbelievable levels of detail and color quality, low noise, love the video features and live view.
Unfortunately my one complaint is a big one! The weather resistance claim is misleading. With my previous 400D, I was able to continue shooting in very light rain, unprotected. With the 5DII, even inside a rain protection sleeve with no moisture directly hitting the body, the camera electronics fail. The first time it required major repairs, and the second time it had to sit on an air vent overnight to reduce humidity before it worked again.
Pros: good battery life, Quick Start-up time, excellent image quality, Bright LCD
Cons: misleading weather resistance claim

Incredible still images
on March 3, 2012

This camera creates the absolute best still images for the money. I use the 24-105L stock lens (very good) plus the 70-200L F4 which for the price has unbelievable images across the entire F range and is relatively small.
The known issues with this camera are well publicized so I will list but not rant...no pop up flash for fast fill shots (did not put it in the Mark III either, dumb!), poor high speed focus, archaic focusing system, loud! mirror/shutter, mediocre flash metering, cheap CF door...)
For travel and stills it is the worlds cheapest great camera with images that are truly incredible but for sports I would look elsewhere. Video has clumsy controlled but is incredible.

Lays Golden Eggs

I am very pleased with this investment.
I was able to shoot a three week-end rehersal for 20
episodes of a musical tv production in available light.
What I was able to capture blew away the most exeperienced technicians in the field that worked this project.
When I produce prints, there is not much that I have seen which can come close. I use HD ink and printers.
My HD video work flow is still in proccess.
The learning curve is steep, I am excited by my progress.
Firmware upgrade 2.0.3 was worth waiting for.
Thanks Canon!
Pros: excellent image quality, easy to use

Excellent Camera

I just switched from Canon 50D to Canon 5D Mark II .
Ladies and gentelman the difference is in the details. Great quality of picture. I only had this camera for few hours now, but I can tell the difference between Canon 50D and Mark II. I know some people complain about focus on this camera, so far had no problems. In fact this camera is focusing much better then my 50D.
I am glad that I bought this piece, so far I love it.
Pros: good battery life, excellent image quality, Bright LCD, easy to use
Cons: noisy
