This review is for the GE 14.1 cu ft manual defrost upright freezer. Based on other reivews, GE seems to have higher reliability than other brands which was the main reason I chose this model. This is the old style freezer than runs coolant through the fixed shelving. I believe this style can be filled fuller than other types that blow cold air through the unit because you don't have to worry so much about blocking air flow. The shelves seem sturdy enough.... they do flex just a little if you push on them. The unit has a green light at the bottom that shows you if it has power. It has a manual thermostat control on the inside. The unit dissipates the heat to the outer sides of the freezer. Although there is a grill at the front base of the freezer, no fans are behind it to cool anything which is a plus..... the only thing on it to break is basically a compressor. It has a defrost drain with a hose that is hidden behind the grill. Two screws remove the grill to get at it(you could easily reroute it to the back if you wanted). The plastic parts that keep food from falling off the inside door shelves is rather flimsy... Not sure how long that will hold up for.
Power consumption and cooling seem good for a unit of this size. I mounted an internal air temperature sensor to monitor how cold it kept the inside. With it mostly empty and 4 gallon jugs of frozen water inside, I tested various settings:
At the lowest setting of 1, The temperature inside varied between -10 and -17.1 degrees C while consuming 0.64kWh in a 24 hour period. At the default factory setting of 4, the temperature inside varied between -13.5 and -21.4 C while consuming 0.80kWh in a 24 hour period. At one less than the highest setting of 6, the temperature inside varied between -16.5 and -26 C while consuming 0.96kWh in a 24 hour period. The unit only draws roughly 80-100 Watts while running. So I think that is pretty good. At the lowest setting its running at a 29% duty cycle, so basically you're using the equivalent power of a 25W incandescent bulb running 24/7.
Another thing I like is that if you read the manual, the manufacturer states this freezer can keep the inside cold in a 110 degree F environment. That's impressive and means they have some good design margin designed in, not to mention you could run it in the garage during a hot summer or with a generator when you don't have power for your household AC and it gets warm inside the house.

Now I know for sure the door is closed tight and not, by accident, left partially open. Just the right size for two people and holds temp well. Also like the outside finish. Very easy to clean.

Do not really like the basket but it does work. I would go out and buy this one again or tell my friends to go do the same. You cant find a better one.
