Second Canon Purchase

OK, I read all the reviews, mostly good, some bad. I purchased the camera and wow, amazing. I had two goals in mind, one my wife who wants to pick up the camera, push a button and shot, period. The second goal was to satisfy my camera needs which are things like the incredible amount of settings and the ease of setting. I read some of the reviews and saw people complain about the user manual. Anytime you have a device that can do so much it becomes a little tough to put it in a format that works for everyone. My suggestion on the user manual is download the PDF from the web sight, have it on your computer and enlarge to 200% and it becomes an easy manual to read.
As far as the camera goes, it is a delight. One of the complaints, which I agree with, is the lens cover does not have a means of attaching it to the camera other than the clip on the inside used to clip to strap. I might add that having a clip is better than my Minolta which has nothing.
The perfect camera is yet to be made but this is getting darn close.
Pros: easy to use, Simple controls/menu, Nice features/settings, Bright LCD, excellent image quality

Until CANON offers all the same feature as this SX10 IS in a 14-mp and 24-opt zoom with the CCD, in this same body; this is the one for me.
If CCDs are good enough for the Hubbel space telescope it is good enough for me. Go Canon.
I use Litheum battaries, I found that these out perform AA's that are designed for digital devices by far, and the digital batteries put standard AA batteries to shame.
I use the 8gig SDHC card in the class (6), the 8gig (I use) out performs the write speed of the 4 and 16gig cards by nearly twice the speed; all three have the same read speed. Don't know why the 8gig is so much faster for write.
All aspects of this SX10 IS is fine, You have to learn it to appreciate it fully; I have nothing to say that would belittle this model.
I currently own four previous CANON models which are all good but this one, it is gold for me.
It has a good solid weight, good form for the hand, and the sunshade is always available. The rotatable screen is a major plus; when you need to use this feature it is worth it's weight in platnum.
Pros: Nice features/settings, Bright LCD, excellent image quality, good battery life, durable, good solid weight, ergonomically comfortable

Best "Point-n-Shoot" you'll find.

The only reasons I gave 'features' 4 stars vs 5 was because there is no "Raw" mode in picture format and wished this unit could use filters. Otherwise, this camera is the best, easiest to use point n shoot camera I've ever used or read about. This was a major upgrade from my other camera. The flip LCD view screen is excellent and very useful idea. I specifically prefer a camera to use standard AA's. I use 2850mAh rechargeables and they last great in this unit. And when you are in a pinch with dead batteries, you can always pop into a shop and get some AA's until you can recharge. Functions are "natural" in the camera. I took it to Italy and forgot the book at home and had no trouble using the camera, especially in auto mode. Pictures came out great. Ones I took to stitch together later with included software were easy to do and came out great. Very powerful zoom and image stabilizer made for steady photos as well. Using this camera came naturally. Using the LCD vs the view finder does not seem to make a difference in battery life. Real plus. Being able to flip the screen to the front makes for great self portraits and other angles for shooting over head or low to the floor for creative shots. I was also able to shoot down on glass cases in museums for better views. This is the most flexible camera I've seen. Not having to change lenses when on the go really saves time and trouble vs a true SLR. It's truly the best of both worlds. You can really zoom into what you want at a moment's notice. This camera is fast and stable. You won't hear motor noise when zooming in video mode either. Did I mention the audio is stereo? I was able to take photos from the "bullet train" on my way to Venice and they came look great. The more I use this camera, the more I like it. Out of the box, the camera is a breeze to use, and after reading the manual, you'll discover that you have a real super camera. I've even taken photos of the Moon clearly and can see textures on the surface. With most other point n shoot units, you'll just see a white disc in the sky. Get a 16GB SD card and you'll be set for the trip. What would I add to this camera? Not much, it's near perfect. Either threads for filter use or an adapter ring to use one.
Pros: easy to use, Simple controls/menu, Nice features/settings, Bright LCD, excellent image quality, Good Low-Light Performance, Lightweight/Portable, good battery life, durable, standard batteries, powerful zoom, easy included software
Cons: no filter option, no raw photo format

A good camera for wildlife photography

I bought this camera specifically for a birding trip to Uganda. I used it for two months before I left to get the hang of it. My only complaint about the camera is that the manual focus does not work but that is a small drawback. The auto focus does not focus all that well on small objects but overall it give good results. It tends to overexpose the photos so I had to adjust the exposure setting 1/3 down. I took nearly 400 pictures in Uganda on 2.5 sets of alkaline batteries. That is one of the reasons I chose this camera was because it used regular batteries which you can carry with you anywhere. Of the pictures I took only about 5% were out of focus. One a Puff Adder among leaves. It focused on the leaves rather than the snake, but another picture of the snake came out well. I took almost all of the picture using the view finder. I don't much care for the screen.
The digital zoom is actually surprisingly good. I took a shop of a Long-crested Eagle on a power pole a half mile away and it actually came out rather well.
The main criticisms are: The shooting mode dial should have a lock on it so it can not accidently turn which it does. There are too many setting and buttons. The manual focus is worthless. There should be a focus 3 shot step on auto focus like there is on manual focus.
The software that comes with the camera would not work on my computer even though it was supposed to. None of it. I use Photoshop instead.
Do not expect the quality telephoto photos that you would get with one of the Canon special 500mm lenses but actually the results are surpisingly good considering the compactness of the camera.
I am very pleased. This is an excellent alternative to hauling around 30 pounds of expensive camera gear.
Pros: good battery life, excellent image quality, durable, Lightweight/Portable
Cons: Complicated controls/menu

Great upgrade and improvement

Just purchased the new SX10 IS, upgraded from my S5, which was upgraded from my S2. Needless to say, thank you Canon for listening to the many suggestions from previous S Series users. Improved image quality, wide angle lens, 20x not necessary but meets competition. Quality is outstanding. The camera is somewhat bigger, heavier but TOTAL SATISFACTION on this end overall.
Pros: easy to use, Simple controls/menu, Nice features/settings, excellent image quality, good battery life, durable
Cons: Heavy/Bulky

Just about perfect.

I got this camera in December 2008, and have taken about 1000 pictures with it. I bought it to move up from a point and shoot, but I didn't want to go for an SLR. I wanted something that would offer me SLR-like control (speed, aperture, focus), and a wide focal length (28-200+) without carrying around the full weight of an SLR, and without having to carry around different lenses. (I've done the SLR thing, and I loved it, but it wasn't what I wanted this time out.)
After 1000 pictures, I can tell you that I love this camera. The pictures are gorgeous, it was perfect to take on a vacation through Asia, and it offered exactly what I was looking for -- something between a point and shoot, and an SLR.
PROS: Easy to use, beautiful pictures, great controls, the hinged LCD on the back is incredibly useful (taking pictures above your head, or from your waist), the AA batteries are great if you're on the road. (The camera doesn't burn through batteries, but if you get caught in Cambodia, as I did, with rechargeable batteries that went dead, you just pop into a store and you're good for the rest of the day.) I also found myself shooting video occasionally, which turned out just beautifully.
It was a joy to take pictures of my kids with this camera, and is a great camera for family pictures. If you're taking pictures of kids, it's wonderful.
CONS: Three minor things: 1) I had trouble at first controlling the flash - using it to fill in faces in a dark room with sun coming through the windows. You really need to read the instructions. (So this isn't really a con, but it's something you should be aware of. Read the manual.) 2) I wish the lens cap had a string or something to attach it to the body of the camera. I haven't lost it, but I'm always worried about it, because: 3) I wish you could put a clear filter/lens protector on the front of the lens, but you can't.
All in all, these are three very very minor points from a terrific camera.
On thing that's surprising: You don't see many of these "Ultra Zoom" cameras in America, but they're HUGE in Asia - and you find yourself talking to people who agree that they're the perfect way to take great pictures without carrying around a full SLR kit.
In the end, I'm incredibly happy with it. Great camera.
Pros: easy to use, Simple controls/menu, Nice features/settings, Bright LCD, excellent image quality, Good Low-Light Performance, Lightweight/Portable, good battery life, durable

Highly Recommend this camera!!

This is my 5th digital camera and the best camera investment I have ever made. (Also use another brand of digital SLR). I love the ease and versitility of the lens without having to take multiple lenses with me with I must travel light! I used this camera extensive this summer while traveling with a drum & bugle corps all over the country. I was able to capture close up faces on the field from the 5th level of Mile High stadium!!
There were times when the camera was telling me to raise the flash (which I ignored), but still exposed an excellent jpg with minimal light. The ability to flip around the viewing screen to protect it is a strong asset.
My only regret is that I did not purchase this camera prior! Amazingly, the AA batteries last extremely long, with multiple on/off, zoom in/out during the use. I still carry a back up set of AA's with me, just in case!
Purchase this camera with the confidence it will most likely be the last high end digital zoom you will buy until you wear the camera out!!
Pros: easy to use, Simple controls/menu, Nice features/settings, Bright LCD, excellent image quality, Good Low-Light Performance, Lightweight/Portable, good battery life, durable

SX 10 IS

Quite happy with this camera with a caveat or two.
As others have noted, poor noise, basically anything above ISO 100 and you begin to see noise, even in bright sun, unless everything in the scene is bright. Definitely not a indoors camera without lots of flash, the built in flash is of limited use, and only works close in. As others mentioned, the lens cap falls off easily, and even a new one was ordered and exhibited the same issue. The lens shield is easily lost, and I lost mine, had to order a new one also (hint- some sort of locking feature would be in order).
IMHO, way too many pixels in such a tiny sensor, which causes considerable noise. It would be nice to have a lower resolution setting, where the camera would average the noise of adjacent pixels, which would remove a lot of this issue. One can always spend time with Photoshop and manually to reduce the noise issue.
Everything else is wonderful, if we could just get the minor things fixed, and get a larger less noise prone sensor, and Canon would have a winner that would stomp all their competitors easily.
I love this camera, wish they'd used a lower resolution sensor, or a larger size sensor due to the high noise levels of the current sensor (CCD/CMOS).
Pros: easy to use, Simple controls/menu, Nice features/settings, Lightweight/Portable, good battery life, durable, nice lens
Cons: noise!, lens cover easily falls off, lens hood comes off easily
