Purchased this SX10 IS as an upgrade to my S5 IS; still have the S5 IS by the way.
I had bought the wide and tele lenses for the S5 IS, they turned out to be such a hassel. The SX10 IS was introduced and I put away the lenses and bought my first SX10 IS. I am very pleased I did. The 16" x 20" prints are truly extraordinary. I receive comments of how crystal clear and sharp far away objects are in the pictures.
I am so pleased with this SX10 IS I have ordered a second one before they are no longer available.
If you care about your pictures being viewed with aw and delight, this is the camera for taking such pictures.
Although I don't use a still shot camera for movies, what few I've done are quite nice; I beliieve movie cameras are for movies.
I use class-6 SDHC cards, and lithium batteries as often as possible.
The removable lens cap is great; I shirt-pocket it, and it is not being wind blown agaist the camera body during shooting sessions. Nothing is more frustrating than to have a once in a lifetime picture partially covered by a flittering lens cap.
Take time to learn all of the possible settings, and experiment.
This SX10 IS will put enjoyment into, and back into photography.
Together, my SX10 IS and A650 IS is a camera package that cannot be beat. That is why I have two sets.
Pros: easy to use, Simple controls/menu, Nice features/settings, Bright LCD, excellent image quality, Good Low-Light Performance, good battery life, durable, uses available aa batteries, a good firm weight
I would recommend this to a friend!

Update to previous post...

First drafts, well, are first drafts! Ouch, my middle school english teacher is probably having a coronary...
Memory card placement is improved! With the S2, you didn't have to open the battery compartment and the later S series you needed to open the battery compartment (oh, wait, I just dropped my batteries in the dirt while changing cards). This prevented us from upgrading until now!
Buy a set of Maha rechargeable batteries! We bought two sets and a charger plus car adapter.
Buy the fastest memory card and largest size for any video. I like to have multiple cards like rolls of film. If you have ever had a memory card die, well, don't put all your diamonds in one necklace. I'm glad they're using .mov! Although I have a digital camcorder, this is nice for occasional clips and with most new DVD player 'upconverting' video it really doesn't look that bad on HDTVs :-)
Macro and wide angle have some edge fuzziness however, in post production just crop out the problem (advantage of using the high resolution possible).
Buy the largest memory cards so that you can shoot at high resolution, crop what you want and still have a great shot.
Would like to purchase a plain glass lens attachment to protect the glass in the lens cover is worthless and attaching it to the neck strap...I see it float off in the water after I forget it's there during the shooting excitement. Dumb not to include a string (yes it would be tricky attaching the cap with the hood in place, however).
Did I mention Maha batteries (no vested interest in the company) and how they will paid for the camera within a year vs regular batteries not to mention the extended energy they provide.
Summary:
If you are not interested in a digital SLR and want macro + zoom capabilities in one package then this is a purchase. Can't recommend the S5 because of the memory card location :-(
If you truly need point-n-shoot consider an Elf for convenience or G10 with build in lens cover both of which are great travel cameras (I also own a PowerShot SD 880 IS - wide angle people pictures and general scenery stored in a button down shirt pocket).
Pros: optical zoom, wide angle, memory card placement, image stabilization, hood
Cons: lens cap - needs a string, battery life, no plain glass or polarizing lens attachments

big step up

I purchased this camera to replace an old Canon Powershot A40 because I wanted one with image stabilization and a high zoom range. It has waaay more features than I'll ever learn to use, but the picture quality on Auto and Program (where I use the super macro for flowers, bugs, etc) is great. The sports setting is great for taking several shots quickly. The articulating lcd viewing screen is great. The lens cover needs a tether. I had good luck with low-light pics w/o the flash. The camera is bulky and a little heavier than I would have preferred, the button that relates to the flash/sound on the top left of the camera that I invariably press when holding the camera for a picture is poor placement (I think) & I thought it was going through batteries waay to fast, but I believe I figured out what my problem was there because I just returned from a weeklong trip on which I took lots of pics and the batteries held up very well. The self-timer blinking light is difficult to see & I couldn't hear any sound even when I increased the volume on that. I read lots of reviews before making this purchase and this one came out on top everytime I compared it to others. I am, overall, very satisfied with this camera.
Pros: Nice features/settings, Bright LCD, excellent image quality, Good Low-Light Performance
Cons: Complicated controls/menu, Heavy/Bulky, lens cover needs a tether, poorly located button top left of camera, better instructions on settings for novices

My thoughts sx10is

The auto focus is iffy too many times I've found. Here is what I've done to try to compensate: I changed the autofocus from continuous, to single. I've changed the is mode from continuous to shoot only, and I set the focus to center rather than face detect. I can't state that resolved the problem completely but, I can say it shows promise. The camera does focus faster it seems. Overall, I think this is a top notch performer, although, in my opinion, 10 megapixels is too many for so small a sensor.
The menu options are pretty straight forward. The manual could use a quick reference guide rather than such a lengthy go to this page, go to that page. The focus lamp is in a bad place. You can block it with your finger.
What I like:
Solid feel.
Surprsingly good image quality for a small sensor sporting 10 megapixels.
Being able to not only zoom clearly while shooting a movie, but also being able to brighten the movie if need be AND snap decent stills while doing so.
Stereo sound.
super macro
4aa batteries
This is a very nice camera, but requires the user to read the manual several times, then experiment, experiment, experiment. AS time goes on, and my familiarity with it gets better, I think I made the right choice here.
Pros: Nice features/settings, excellent image quality, Good Low-Light Performance, good battery life, durable

I have boughted this camera yesterday and very happy with its functions and image quality. It seems to be a SLR, but records movies.
There is only one thing I must mention: USB cable provided is not HighSpeed certified, and I cannot connect camera at full speed with this cable, the communication hangs up. I test with a certified cable and it works great. Canon must change the cable model so it works well at full speed.
Great camera!
Pros: easy to use, Simple controls/menu, Bright LCD, excellent image quality
Cons: usb cable not highspeed certified

Amazing Camera

I bought this camera from US, its an lovely camera to use, awesome zoom and supported by Good Image Stabilization software. The Movie mode is very good even a 20X zoom you can take superb videos which is good feature included in this camera.
The Macro mode is pretty good and takes fantastic pictures. But there are distortions at the edges and at high ISO there is lot of noise.
Its bit bulky too but its manageable.
Pros: 20x zoom, image stabilizer works well even at full zoom, movie at 20x zoom, different modes, macro and super macro zoom are good, image clarity, able to detect around 15 faces at a time, intellignet contrast works fine, macro mode with zoom also works.
Cons: bit bulky, lens cap should had some holder to attach, too much noise at high iso even at 400, there is distortion at the edges, body quality is average

Excelent Camera!

The Canon PowerShot SX10 IS is an excellent 10 MP point-and-shoot with a powerful optical zoom and an excellent wide angle for close-up shots. The manual control gives the camera excellent options for creative photography. I also own the Canon EOS DIGITAL REBEL XTi and I use the PowerShot SX10 IS when I need to take a quick shot and I don't have time to switch lenses, and since the PowerShot SX10 IS has a how shoe I can use my Canon Speedlite 430EX with both cameras, allowing me a wider range of shot illumination options.
Pros: 20x zoom, 2.5" swing out tilt 'n' swivel screen, 10-megapixel, face detection, hot shoe, easy to use menus
Cons: iso 800+ is a little noisy, no raw mode, some chromatic aberration and purple fringing, no memory card is included :(

Got this as an in-between camera before I step up to a D-SLR. I have always used Cannon cameras and this seeemed like a good choice for what I was looking for. The extra $50 gets you a better zoom range than the S5 IS, and I havent had any of the problems that some other reviewers seem to have had. Been using it for about a week and have shot around 80 pics and have had no issues and am impressed with the image quality of the zoom and overall compared with the 2 A Series I have used in the past. Still a little pricey though, could have got a different brand SLR for that kind of money, but the Cannon name sets a quality standard that others cant compete with.
Pros: easy to use, Simple controls/menu, Nice features/settings, excellent image quality, durable
Cons: cost
