I had the Epson 1270 printer for a few years and it produced beautiful vibrant color photos and maintained a perfect glossy finish.Unfortunatly It stopped working and the repair company said it couldn't be repaired, even though they didn't even open the unit to see. I read all about the R1900 and it is stated to produce vibrant colors, etc.etc. I find it does not produce vibrant colors nor a glossy finish as good as the 1270. The new inks are dull and flat matte in comparrison. I also purchased an SX425W printer to use in the interim while waiting for the delivery of the R1900. It has the ultrabright ink which is drab as well. I like the performance of the R1900 but I am disappointed in the color vibrancy and lack of glossy finish. Plus the cost of ink cartridges for minimum amounts of ink also makes printing cost extreemly high in comparison to older printers that had larger capacity ink cartridges.

Buyer Beware

The printer, when it works is beautiful. However, I have spent more time checking, cleaning heads and generally trying to get it to work that I ever have printing with it. Beyond the days of lost time, I have spend a boat-load of money on printer cartridges because they constantly get clogged.
As much as I've enjoyed Epson printers over the last 12 years, this one is surely a lemon.
BTW, if you live in NYC and have a problem you have to somehow get out to central Long Island or travel to Hackensack to get it repaired. Unbelievable.

R1900 Ink Jet Printer

I used an R1800 for three years and thought it was very special. The R1900 is even better. The interface is simpler, there are fewer moving parts and the new generation of ink is simply outstanding. I'm making 13X19 prints now that are actually marketable. The clarity, sheen and fine matrix is superb. I look forward every day to sitting down with my archives and my R1900.

Good printer most of the time

I have had this printer for over a year and it has excellent photo print quality. To summarize it has good print quality, prints on a wide range of media. Another plus is that it will do printable CD/DVDs (which very few others are able to do).
However, the ink cartridges are expensive and do not last long. The other issue I have is that one or more print head colors tend to clog about every 3-4 months, requiring one to run the head cleaning routine. Recently, I had one color completely clogged up and even after many attempts to clean it using the cleaning routine and it still is clogged, while using up enormous amounts of ink on the other cartridges. I was advised by Epson to bring it in for servicing (not cheap and not nearby). I see that this printer would likely work well if used every day, which I do not, preventing the heads from drying/clogging. They also advised that it should be off when not in use. For me, this whole situation is a problem: expensive & short-lived cartirdges, chronic clogging, remembering to turn it off.
Based upon this experience, I can see why other manufacturers put the print head in the cartridge, allowing one to totally replace the print head with each cartridge replacement.

After my 8 year old Epson R-800 started having problems, I knew I had to have another Epson. The R-1900 fit right into my budget ( of course the rebate helped). The installation to my I-Mac 27" was easy and quick. The first two prints were sharp and crisp and duplicated the illustration on my computer screen. Love the Epson!

I can find no fault with this printer--it has exceeded my expectations in every way. My initial test prints ran the gamut from vivid to extremely subtle color tones, on both professional and consumer paper, and the R1900 rendered them all perfectly.
Optical media and roll printing are extremely easy to set up, and have performed flawlessly
