5 years on, this lens still brings a smile to my face every time I mount it on my camera.
The most amazing thing about this lens is not just the fact that it's the fastest AF 135mm lens for 35mm photography with a bright f/1.8, It also focuses all the way down to 0.72m! something most 85mm lenses out there cannot achieve let alone 200mm's.
I originally used an a900 with this lens and AF is very reliable. It is not super fast, nor quiet, BUT when the focus locks on, you can almost guarrantee yourself every time that focus is nailed, and I cannot stress enough how important this actually is on a relatively long lens with a bright aperture. Slightest margin of error in AF will show up in photos due to shallow depth of field.
I acquired an A7R with Sony's LA-EA4 recently and my impression of this lens is still that it's capable of out-resolving even the 36MP sensor. No real issues wide open, and you will see the best part of this lens when you stop down to f/4 and continue to be "oh-so-sweet" sharp through to f/7.1 or there about. One thing I wish Sony could improved on with this combo is the speed of AF especially in poor light, and less hunting. A new firmware that makes this happen will make my day!
The focus stop button on the lens barrel is a very useful feature and something that helps me to compose and nail the focus every time.
I'd even go as far to say that this lens is under-priced for what it is. Performance at f/1.8 is superb most of the times, despite lateral CA being visibly present under certain conditions, but no lens is perfect. Kudos to Sony and Zeiss for coming up with something that's unique and performs.
Aspects of this lens that can be improved on, IMO could include an SSM focus mechanism for video and street shooters and weather sealing. If Sony can manage this without somehow increase the price point by too much, I feel just maybe, this is the first product ever I will give a 6 out 5 rating to. So please Sony make the "Mark II" happen!
An additional nice touch is that the lens hood is made out of metal. Love it!
Pros: Quality, Value for Money, Durability
I would recommend this to a friend!
