Disappointed it does not work in MacOS Big Sur
on January 8, 2021
Posted by: jmarch
I was very happy with this adapter, but I have upgraded to MacOS Big Sur and the adapter is no longer supported. I'm disappointed there is not an updated driver for it.
Response from startech.comBy Dan, Customer Support, June 11, 2021
Thank you for your patience. A new driver is available that allows the product to work with macOS 11.3 and up.
The new driver can be found under the "Drivers/Downloads" section of the product page. If you have any issues installing the new driver, please don't hesitate to contact our support directly.

Work Unstable

Unstable operation when connected to a laptop port work MacOs High Sierra 10.13.6 You have to reinstall the device driver all the time. Download and upload speeds are good for streaming.

Works good (after a little bit of effort)
on October 19, 2019

First install attempt was unsuccessful (I believe it's because I didn't use "Run as Administrator" when I first ran Setup.exe). I had no Link/Activity LED's. - Although the adapter may work for some without the drivers, they were required for my work laptop. - I had to uninstall the driver from Control Panel as well as the device from Device Manager. - I recommend installing the driver before plugging in the adapter. - Right-click the "Setup.exe" file and select "Run as Administrator" (even if your user account is Administrator, follow this step anyway) - Connect the adapter and then connect an ethernet cable to it. - Unplug/Plug the adapter from USB after the first connection if you don't have any Link/Activity LED's

Works supperb in many applications

I've got 2 of these plus a slightly earlier version originally purchased to use for PXE booting Windows laptops, tablets and PCs. Don't seem to have any issue in Windows 10, windows updates you can bet are likely to mess many things up and I even seen it mess up Graphics cards, network cards etc. I suggest if you buy this to make sure that it will fit the intended use and research as much as possible.

Worked instantly and perfectly with Win10 T.P.
on October 24, 2014

I purchased this to upgrade my laptop that had 10/100 Ethernet. Later, I installed Win10 Tech Preview on my desktop, and the Intel driver for the I218v gigabit Ethernet adapter wasn't compatible. Dug this adapter out of a drawer, plugged it in to USB3, and instantly had gigabit Ethernet. It's a great performer - I'm impressed all over again. Thanks, StarTech!

No Big Sur compatibility

Device incompatible with Big Sur. The OS is almost a year old, but Start Tech is sitting on their bum rather than supporting their products

Doesn't work with current Linux kernels
on August 17, 2018
Posted by: ron049
The datasheet says this works with Linux kernels up to 3.5.0. But the current version of Ubuntu uses 4.15.0. Is there a driver version that will work with current releases of Ubuntu? Strangely, it seems to work fine with Linxux Mint which also runs the 4.15.0 kernel.
Response from startech.comBy Nick, Customer Support, August 20, 2018
Thank you for your review.
While our USB31000S may work in operating systems and kernels not listed, we're only able to offer support for the ones that are listed. In this case, we are only able to support LTS kernels between 2.6.25 and 4.11.x.
We are not currently able to provide drivers for unsupported operating systems or kernels. We apologize for any inconvenience this may cause.
