Frequently Locks/Unresponsive
on December 25, 2013
Posted by: displeased75
This device frequently locks up and becomes unresponsive, forcing me to unplug the power and plug it back in before I can use it.
The player freezes when attempting to load Blu-Ray and DVD discs. 9 times out of 10 freezes when attempting to load Netflix, forcing an entire reboot of the player. Sometimes I have to abandon any notion of using this device because reboots fail to get it working again.
This is NOT a network issue in my home as all other networked devices perform fine and retain internet connectivity when this blu-ray player locks up. I do have the most recent software update on it as well, and it is directly connected via ethernet cable.
No, I would not recommend this to a friend.

No sound / poorly designed user manual

If i could give one tenth of a star i would. My tv doesn't have hdmi connects; nowhere does it say i must have hdmi connects. The player has a video cable connect but no audio cable connect. So i think, 'Okay the video connect must handle volume as well, hmm that's interesting; wonder what the manual says.' Surprise surprise the manual doesn't address the issue, it does have pictures and symbols, but words apparently have become trite things that have no real place in todays world. The player also has a coaxial connect for surround sound, but no help for me as i don't have surround sound. There is no doubt a fairly simple answer to this problem but Phillips is keeping it a secret. Why? Nobody could no. Seems pretty dumb to this consumer, but then i can't even hook up a simple bluray player without having to refer to the user manual; so what do i know. Returning tomorrow for refund. Next time i'll open the box in the store to make sure i don't need an electronics degree to hook up.
Pros: the power cord fit the socket it was designed for, the picture looked okay.
Cons: the user manual was designed by 16 yr old., an audio jack would be handy., too much trouble to set up., learning curve expected but enough is enough

Not user friendly

Requires a wi-fi dongle, which I didn't even know existed until it kept telling me to make sure it was plugged in. Also, the user manual was not helpful at all. When trying to set up the wi-fi, it just said "follow instructions on screen" which didn't help because I didn't know what a dongle was or that it was even required. Also, it did not make the buyer aware that an HDMI cable was not included so that was frustrating to open it and find out that I didn't have one.
Cons: user manual is not helpful, was not informed that hdmi cable not included, wi-fi dongle required
No, I would not recommend this to a friend.

Great product, but misleading

I needed to replace our outdated DVD player, and started looking into options. I stumbled across this product on a retailer website and was very attracted to BluRay/DVD feature, for the price. Very interested in the upconversion feature when run through HDMI, and as with most other reviewers, was excited to get a DVD player for this value with wi-fi. Now clearly, when it comes to an item having an option for wireless network connection, it is typically assumed that the hardware is built-in. Upon attempting to setup a wireless connection, it was prompted that a "wireless dongle" is needed to complete a wireless network setup. Personally, it is not a huge issue, however, if it would have been indicated beforehand that this piece of hardware would be needed, I would have probably purchased another manufacturer's product, with "built-in wi-fi". If Philips is going to offer the option to connect wirelessly, at least include the hardware in the box, to forego the extra step of needing to purchase additional hardware from its parts supplier. Overall, I can't complain about the player itself. The picture is clean, the performance is reliable, but the description of the product up front can be a little misleading. If they could correct that particular issue, I would feel comfortable rating this higher.

WAS VERY DISAPPOINTED WHEN I BROUGHT THIS PRODUCT HOME AND TRIED TO HOOK IT UP. IVE NEVER HEARD OF A WIFI DONGLE AND HAD NO INDICATION FROM READING THE BOX THAT THIS PRODUCT REQUIRED ONE TO CONNECT TO THE INTERNET. I THOUGHT THE PRICE WAS GREAT, BUT OBVIOUSLY TOO GOOD TO BE TRUE. I'M EXCHANGING THE PRODUCT ASAP.

Worthless

I bought this so we would be able to watch DVD/Blu-Rays and more importantly have netflix and vudu. For playing disks, the best I can say is that it does work. The disk tray is frustrating as it doesn't like to eject without a little coercion. Sometimes the disk tray doesn't stay open while loading a disk. Fortunately it is too weak to damage the disk. As for netflix and vudu, forget it. Netflix just doesn't work. The response is impossible, and once you manage to navigate to the show or movie you want to watch, the show is "undefined". This is not a Netflix issue since I can go to another device and load the very same show with no issue. If the show does load, expect it to take about 10 to 15 minutes. Of course sometimes it goes that long and still does not work. While the Vudu interface works, you can only watch previews. If you order a movie or try to watch one you already own, it will not work.
Pros: it plays dvds and blu-ray disks
Cons: netflix doesn't work, vudo doesn't work, disk tray doesn't eject properly, pandora doesn't work
No, I would not recommend this to a friend.

Not bad, a little disappointed with no wi-fi right out of the box.

I agree with some of the other reviews. The manufacturer could be more honest and list on the box what other hardware is needed for the full functionality implied on the box. I carefully read the instructions and found no information indicating I needed a USB wi-fi dongle. I had to read about it here on the reviews. I was even reading the specifications looking for directions on what was needed. I find the Phillips answer to one of the reviews lacking in integrity as well. To tell us "oh well, you should have bought a different model" is very poor customer service. This will result in decreased trust with other Philips products. I will seek to purchase items made by a different company.
