Excellent refrigerator for the price

[This review was collected as part of a promotion.] This is an excellent refrigerator for a single person to a small family. Parents and 2 or 3 children. It is very quiet. Looks nice. Door shelves are very wide. Plenty of space. It is an excellent choice for the price.
I would recommend this to a friend!

Don't buy major appliance online, unseen in person
on July 11, 2014

We bought this on line without being able to view it in person. And we bought it thinking it would actually have more cu. ft. of usable space in it. Big mistake. Not only did we have a thermostat problem right off the bat (with food in the fridge freezing--we lost good food that way--and frost accumulating in the freezer, necessitating a repair man visit just 2 months after purchase), but I would highly question the "21 cu. ft." claim. (Q: How much of that is USABLE space?) Our old 20 cu. ft different brand, which lasted 23 years, I believe, had more USABLE room than this one does. The GE fridge shelves end a good 1-1 1/2" from the back of the fridge--meaning wasted space! Furthermore, in order to close in the appliance's motor (so you don't have to clean the condenser coil, which IS good), GE, however, had to whack off at an angle the back ends of the veg. and fruit drawers. You can barely squeeze in celery (diagonally!) much less cucumbers and carrots, etc.--and THIS in a time when all the experts are telling us to eat MORE fruits and vegetables. My old fridge had large, roomy bins. And unfortunately, the 4-5" wide light and control panel hangs down from the entire center (back to front) of the fridge ceiling, making it very difficult to pull tall items (like a wine box or 2-qt juice pitcher) out at an angle. It can't be done because they hit the overhead panel. Instead, they must be placed or removed in a front to back line--a real hassle. Sometimes several items need to be removed from the line, in order to reach something in the back. FREEZER: In the freezer, not only do we still have some frost (it IS better than before), but GE tells you to keep all items 1-2" away from the back freezer vent (to prevent frost build-up). Well, that is hard to do when family members keep shoving things back into the freezer. That rule requires constant freezer vigilance. If GE demands that, then they should build in a little "fence" or guard to help keep items away from the vent, I think. There is also no light in the freezer. That must be the trend now, but I miss it. Furthermore, the ice maker/bin set-up is ridiculous! I guess GE expects you to only use your hand to retrieve ice (don't tell your guests), because the bin's front opening to retrieve ice is so narrow that no ice scoop will fit in or work with this arrangement. And the open top of the bin is mostly covered by the full ice bin "wing." I guess for filling many glasses with ice, they expect you to remove the entire bin from the freezer. (The ice, itself, though, is good: dense and solid.)
Additionally, we are not used to W-I-D-E fridge and freezer DOOR shelves (though some of you may be). But because they're so wide, there is actually less unit shelf space, since the wide door shelves "cut into" the interior shelf space.
Well, we're stuck with this fridge now--till it dies--but for the price we paid and based on its selling points (and it had good reviews!), we do not think the unit lived up to its claims. It's working properly now, and it will have to do, but I'm not real happy with it. I liked my old different brand better.

This lives up to GE standards!

We bought this refrigerator a month ago and couldn't be happier with it. It lives us to the high standards of GE. We did a lot of on-line research before we made our decision, including Consumer Reports. It is very functional and runs quietly!

Arrived damaged

[This review was collected as part of a promotion.] We special ordered this fridge from a local store (chain store) and they delivered it to our home in the box. Unboxing it the delivery crew discovered a bad scratch/dent at lower back and I saw the "kickplate" on the bottom back was bent as well. Later I saw scratches on the front door. It was brought into the house for us to use while a replacement was ordered by the store. HOWEVER, the next morning I discovered water accumulating on the top shelf (from the freezer?) and the food was simply not cold. This grew worse in the next few days and I lost a number of food items and fresh fruits and veggies. We have cancelled the order for another of these refrigerators and placed an order for a different brand altogether. We have used GE products for well over 50 years of our married life. What a disappointment.

Got it delivered and it was a easy set. Runs very quiet, only know it's there when the ice drops into the tray.
