Faulty Defroster Leaked Water on Hardwood Floors

We were totally satisfied with this purchase until after 8 months of use when we discovered a large puddle of water underneath the refrigerator. This water leak caused permanent damage to our hardwood floors. We discovered a large frozen mass of ice at the bottom of the freezer section which was melting and spilling out onto the floor. Suspecting an ice maker leak, we shut off the water to the automatic ice maker and immediately contacted Whirlpool service who promptly scheduled service for the next day. The service technician who visited us found that there was nothing wrong with the ice maker. The problem, he discovered, was caused by a clog in the the automatic defrosting system that caused water to pool into the freezer compartment instead of draining into an evaporator pan underneath the refrigerator. He recommended we remove all of the food from the refrigerator and freezer and leave the refrigerator off for two days to allow the frozen clog to thaw and the problem would clear itself. The source of the clog, he said was unknown, probably a food particle or ice fragment. When I asked if there was any regular maintenance I could do to prevent this from happening again, he said there were no user accessible places to maintain the defrost drain line. He recommended that the refrigerator be installed slightly tilted backward to allow for better drainage to the evaporator pan. This is accomplished by extending the adjustable rubber feet located in the front of the unit, next to the roller feet - The problem with this advice, is that is exactly how the refrigerator was installed and was operating when the defroster system failed. I see a potential design flaw here in the defroster drainage system. This is really too bad. What would otherwise be an outstanding 5-star product apparently has a hidden flaw that may not surface until after many months of use. The recommended corrective action, in my mind is unsatisfactory since I do not want to have to shut down my refrigerator for 2 days at a time every 8 months to clear ice clogs. Furthermore, I do not look forward to potential future puddles causing further damage to my hardwood flooring. The technician's recommendations, while helpful for the short term, did not address the root cause of failure of the defrosting system. Based upon this experience, I would have to give this product 1 star and I would caution potential buyers.

Overall this is a great refrigerator.

The refrigerator has plenty of room and great door space. The water feature is small and does take up a lot of space. The freezer could be a little bigger and I removed some of the dividers to make food fit. Over all this is a good product.

I like the stainless steel finish

Have only been using it for about a month and a half, so it may be early to have a more meaningful evaluation.One concern, the door and freezer handles are slotted slide ons, and they keep coming off. It's only my wife and me at home, so it's not any kids doing it. It's annoying and would be embarrasing in front of guests.
I would recommend this to a friend!

My Whirlpool refrig. is easy to access all of the bins and shelves. The humidity contoled veggie and fruit bins keep spoilage to a minimum.The soda dispenser on the door is very creative by accomdating the 12-pack boxes. I especially like the ease of cleaning the shelves and bins.Thank you Whirlpool, you make a World of difference.

Minor challenges; otherwise a very good product during it's

I had high expectations and thus far were met. I have experienced three minor recurring challenges. If the left door is closed after the right door, intermittently it will partly open the right door. I expect that that problem to remediate itself as the seals loosen up. The second minor problem is that the if the ice tray is full and the freezer door is opened to quickly, some ice cubes will fall out. Finally, the durability of the plastic drawers.

Plenty of space inside, fridge,and freezer, plenty of drawers to keep things fresh and centrally located. Like the glass shelves and ease of adjustments. double door is convenient for quick grabs without opening the whole front. I have never really heard it running, just ice dropping once in a while. I really like the filtered water feature. I am really happy with this product.

Performs better than anticipated

So far, this has proved to be one quality refrigerator. The french door style with the bottom freezer make retreiving items most used more convenient. It has an excellent refrigerator storage area, however, the ice-maker tray does dimish the freezer capacity somewhat, and cleaning below the freezer drawer is difficult, but not impossible. A very good product and very happy with the purchase of it.
