These times, they are a changing…

The 1Ds Mark III has replaced all of the medium and large format cameras that I previously owned. While I miss the "feel" of certain cameras and the fun of looking at an image on the big 4x5 ground glass, I have not regretted unloading that equipment; even after taking a serious loss on its' sale. My clients have never complained about the switch from film to digital; including the artists who now receive their copy-work files generated by the 1Ds Mark III.
The large file sizes give more than enough information to maintain detail even after cropping. I am able to use the iso 1600 setting comfortably when I set the noise reduction to "1" in the Canon Digital Pro software during conversion.
If extreme detail in large prints turn you on, then shoot multiple images and merge them together in software later. A recent panorama of a forest "clear-cut" that I produced measured 2 feet by 10 feet. The detail is ridiculous!
I hope that in spite of bringing out an even larger megapixel camera in the form of a 1Ds Mark IV, that Canon will continue the production of this excellent camera. The fact that the wide angle lenses can now match the quality of the big chips is another reason to consider this full frame monster. The current cost of the camera makes it very attractive too. Buy it now, or kick yourself later.

Having owned an XTi, 1Ds2, 5D2, 1D2N, 1D3...none compare to this body. Absolutely a tank, the pictures have a slight grain/film quality. The 5D2 pictures just did not stand out to me. The 1Ds3 is something special and the photos reflect that. 5 fps is plenty, live view is nice, very customizable camera. Excellent shooting up to ISO 1250 or so (which is plenty). Really can't ask for much more. The weather sealing was what won me over more than anything - the ability to take this thing ANYWHERE and know it will be fine is priceless to me. Awesome camera.
Pros: Nice features/settings, excellent image quality, Superior build quality, Bright LCD, Solid Operation
Cons: Heavy/Bulky

Superb Performer

After 16 months of use, the 1Ds Mark III has proven to be a superb camera. Image quality is remarkably good and the build quality is without peer. The awkward AF point selector aside, the controls are well placed and intuitive, which makes this camera much easier to use than its predecessor. Start up time is fast and processing time is reasonable, given the huge size of the files. The menu design is vastly improved and the battery life is nothing short of amazing. I have a spare battery for my 1D series cameras and have yet to use it, even when shooting all day long with IS in cold weather. This camera also performs extremely well in inclimate weather; I have shot outdoor sports in the driving rain with no protection whatsoever and it never fogged or stalled. Other than weight, cost and the AF selector, I have been completely satisfied with the performance of this camera and would recommend it to any serious photographer.
Pros: Superior build quality, excellent image quality, Simple controls/menu, Nice features/settings, Quick Start-up time, Solid Operation, good battery life
Cons: Heavy/Bulky, cost

Amazing Camera

I've been shooting with this camera for a little over a year and a half now.
It has NEVER let me down once.
I checked all the Pros but didn't check any Cons, mainly because I can't find any. I guess the only thing I would have loved if Canon had a silent shooting mode, where the shutter was completely silent.
But if I want that I'll use a blimp, but the settings are not as easy to get to if I do.
I also have the new 5D Mark II, it's a nice camera and the 21 mpx being the same might seem like a thorn in the flesh because it's less than half the cost, but let me say this....there IS a difference.
While the 5D is nice, it's not the 1ds Mark III. The build is no where near as solid for one, but my review is not for the 5D but for the 1ds Mark III
I love it and if something happened to it, I'd buy another over the 5D all day long.
In sporting events or any other type of shoot where you need to depend on your equipment this one has not let me down.
Pros: Superior build quality, excellent image quality, Bright LCD, Simple controls/menu, Nice features/settings, Quick Start-up time, Solid Operation, easy to use, good battery life

Simply Awesome!

After using the 1Ds Mark III for over a year, I'm still thoroughly amazed at its images! My clients really appreciate the large file size - and I appreciate getting this quality at the price - opposed to going medium format.
I also like the professional features of the menu system, mass (weight) for stability, and overall ergonomics. It's so easy to shoot this camera and a real joy too!
Battery life is AWESOME! For both the 1Ds M3 & 1D M3 bodies, I have a spare battery that I've never needed while on a shoot. I've had the battery last for three full days...amazing!
If Canon could get the cost down, I wouldn't hesitate to get another for other full-frame shooting as the build quality is miles above the 5D series bodies. Even after taking a 20-foot fall (in a roller case), the body still worked fine...as did all my glass.
I really couldn't find any cons except the price and low LCD Resolution. (And that's only because the newer bodies have much better LCD's.)
Pros: Superior build quality, excellent image quality, Bright LCD, Simple controls/menu, Nice features/settings, quiet, Quick Start-up time, Solid Operation, easy to use, good battery life
Cons: low lcd resolution

Awesome

This camera is amazing. Hand held or tripod mounted this camera performs like no other. I have also owned a 50D and while it is a great camera it has nothing on this monster. Combining this camera with the EOS Utility and Digital Photo professional anyone, even an amateur like me, can take extraordinary photos. While there is a learning curve it is an easy one to come to grips with.
Pros: Superior build quality, excellent image quality, Quick Start-up time, Solid Operation, good battery life

what a miracle

this camera replaced my Hasselblad H2 and I never looked back. using it with the 85mm L f1.2 is a complete break through in photography. adding the wireless transmitter is another miraculous feature that has my clients in awe. The extended ISO range with its great noise reduction and pixel size is remarkable. Finally, the dust delete info feature is perfected and its a great plus.
Pros: Superior build quality, excellent image quality, Bright LCD, Simple controls/menu, Nice features/settings, Quick Start-up time, Solid Operation, Lightweight/Portable, good battery life, intuitive
Cons: high price
