Something so simple

I was replacing a fifty year old GE range hood. I thought that by getting another GE range hood the removal and installation would go smoother. Boy was I wrong. In the old unit the power comes in on the left side, on the new unit on the right side. It would have been nice if it could have come from either side. The unit only had one screw hole for the damper even though the instructions call for two. The mounting screw holes where different from the old unit, and attaching the screws is very difficult due to the limited work space. The unit comes with two CFL lamps with the GU24 base instead of the more common US incandescent bulb base.
Once installed the unit performed well and was almost silent on the low fan speed. So while I like the actual product the design made it much more difficult then it needed to be. I could only recommend this to a friend is they were extremely handy or hired an installer.

Not a direct swap with GE hood

Bought this discontinued hood for it look and price. It was suppose to be a direct swap with my old GE hood, or so I thought. Turns out the mounting holes and electrical connection point where in different places from the old unit. This made it a much more difficult job to do. This unit should have been able to connect to power on either right or left side. Why change the mounting points, it should be consistent year after year.
The knockout places for rear venting where far from easy to knock out. I actually had to cut them out. These issues took what should have been an easy remove and replace job into a multi hour project that required a lot more tools and skills then most consumers have.
On the bright side, the unit is much quieter then the old unit and does a good job removing heat and fumes from the range. Besides the aforementioned the only other cons are the CFL bulbs don't use incandescent base, they should have been led, the hood gets dusty quickly and shows fingers prints.
