Real problems with vista
on April 22, 2009

I've always bought HP printers and as a printer this one is fine but it causes real problems if you are running Vista. I've downloaded the relevant drivers from HP but if you set this printer as default it causes Word to unexpectedly close. I'm tired of seeing the Microsoft message that this is a known problem and HP are working on it- I've had the printer for 18 months and have finally decided today that its causing too many problems. It also causes conflicts with the OS.
Will I buy HP again? Not unless I can be sure that there are no conflicts with Vista

Good for the price

The C4480 is a bit inclined to snatch at the paper feed. During set-up it grabbed and spread several sheets which are needed for aligning the print heads, this disrupted the installation and messed the set-up (yes I did fan the sheets first).
The software adds 2 minutes to the start-up routine ( 9 year old computer).
For the price, A4 colour photos are good, perhaps a little pale, 4" by 6"s are brilliant. My previous printer (another brand) was better at A4 size but with infrequent use, the print heads started to block and after a total of about 100 A4 photos was almost unuseable . A new built in head would have cost as much as two C4480s.
If that happeneds with an HP printer I can just buy a new cartridge !
It would not print from "Word 2000" docs at first but the HP help team quickly provided a download to fix the problem.
The scanner works well.
I would recommend this to a friend!

Best printer I have ever owned

I agonised long and hard over replacing my old all in one (from another manufacturer) and I am so, so happy that I decided on this product. It is the fastest, neatest best quality budget all-in-one that I have ever owned. I was worried about the potential consumption of ink, but I have used it frequently for three months and have just replaced the first cartridge. Brilliant. Thank you HP - I hope I won't have to replace this printer for a long time.

The only problem i have with this printer is the disc with the drivers, didn't have the driver for the C4480 and i had to spend a little time downloading it. Other than that, it runs perfectly.

Not Stand alone
on October 12, 2009

The 3-in-one model is set up for photo printing only. It will not scan and print an A4 document as a stand alone machine. A multi step operation using a linked computer is required. A better 4400 series model will presumably get over this, but it was not available at the time although publicised.
My advice to anyone thinking of buying a copier is to demand a demonstration.

Incompatible software
on February 5, 2009

Have had a dependable C3180 for the past 18 months and when it recently broke, thought it worth replacing with another HP as I thought it would be straightforward to connect. Actually bought a C4480 and a Wireless C4580 since I need a printer and backup (and they take the same cartridges), but the software is totally incompatible with my PC, which runs Windows XP.
Eventually, with patches downloaded from the HP site, managed to partially load the software but unable to scan or use the Solutions facilities for either machine. The photocopiers works fine but they are stand alone. The software just does not recognise that either printer is connected. I even called in an experienced computer engineer (at my expense) to check I hadn't done anything wrong, but we are unable to overcome the incompatibility and can only get the printers to partially work. So, after just under 2 weeks, both machines are being returned as unusable to the supplier - a rather expensive mistake.
The HP software takes up a lot of disc space and appears to concentrate too much on firstly loading all the additional facilities. Even using the Advanced installation, software is loaded which you may not require. The process actually seems to overlook the fact the printer needs to be connected to the PC for it all to work!
I will now think twice about purchasing another HP. Very disappointed with both machines.
