Nice Lens

This is one nice lens if you're not a snob. One camera shop I deal with turned up there collective noses at this one. Went to another shop and picked one up. Not disappointed so far. Yes, the camera connection is plastic. OH NO! So if it last a few years, I'll be happy.
No, it's not one of those pricey white lenses. But it works for me so far.
Yes, I will buy the 70-200 2.8L. But later. I'm still enjoying this one.
We are traveling to Europe this summer. Which one would I take a chance on losing or breaking in transit? My pix will be just fine.

Best value & quality in a crop-sensor tele-zoom
on December 27, 2013

If you own a crop-sensor camera like any of the Digital Rebels or the Canon 50D/60D/70D or even the 7D then this is THE value telephoto zoom lens to get. Beside its intended use, Its ideal for travel due to its low weight, good zoom range, and low cost - even if you damaged/lost it, it won't be a big setback. Unless you're a professional, this lens is all you need. One of the best value lenses from Canon.
Pros: price!, image quality better than expected, light weight, travel friendly
Cons: crop-sesnor only?

No complaints for a kit lens
on May 31, 2009

Received this lens as part of an EOS kit. Really enjoyed having the image stabilization included, which helps make up for the average aperture range of the lens. The zoom range is very useful, and the lens is very capable on the wide end.
As expected, sharpness is not excellent, nor is the autofocus quick enough to keep up with more demanding subjects. However, the overall balance of price, performance and features is strong. I'd recommend this lens to anyone starting out in photography, especially as part of a kit. Those who already have an EOS body might consider a faster lens or one with USM.
Pros: value, is, light weight
Cons: Semi-sharp images, Slow auto-focus

Upgrading Soon

I purchased this lens as part of the kit with my T2i. Overall, I like the product as a entry level tool. However, after only three months of use, as I learn about the exposure triangle and the ins and outs of my camera, I now see a need to upgrade to a prime lens which will give me access to bigger apertures for more creativity. The lens is good comparable to price.
Pros: Fast auto-focus
Cons: Poor build quality

I own this lens and use with T2i , i do mostly out door nature pix and find this lens light weight and good for close ups and short distances, i am not a professional so i dont know all the correct terms but the pictures are sharp and color is good, also the lens covers a lot of ranges so i leave it on my camera most of the time..so this is a good overall lens for everyday use ,
Pros: Fast auto-focus, Superior build quality, lightweight

Nice Lens
on February 24, 2011

I bought this lens a few months ago for my Canon T1i! I use this lens quite a bit with almost everything I do! I like it very much for events with many people! It is the perfect size and allows me to get close up shots with out having to be in peoples faces! The price for this lens in fabulous!!
There are though a few things that I am a bit disappointed with. First off I am very disappointed with the time it takes to focus. It takes a bit of thinking on the lenses part to get the right focus. Second I am not to happy with the end ring moving so much! It is harder to work with filters and is VERY noisy!!
The slow focus is something that anyone can work with and the end ring moving is also something I can live with.. So over all I would recommend this lens! It is a nice lens to have in your bag just in case!
Cons: Slow auto-focus

Great addition

Recently I replaced my Rebel XT with the T1i. Along with an included 18-55mm IS, this lens was included in a bundled offer, along with an 8G card.
This lens gives me the longer distance views I wanted, and they are clear views.
I also do astro photography, and this lens will show the craters on the Moon.
Overall, very sharp images. I am well pleased with it.
Pros: typical ease of use, well built, not too heavy
Cons: focus a bit slow but accurate

Great lense for portraits, sports, and wildlife

I purchased this lense due to the following reasons listed below:
* EF-S lense that matches my Canon EOS Rebel XSi
* IS (image stabilizer) feature for handheld shooting of shutter speeds 4 f-stops faster.
* Magnification/conversion factor of 1.6
* Best of the other 5 EF-S lenses
* Small, compact, and weighs just 13.8 oz.
