great step-up lens

This lens has a great range and the IS works well. My only problem is that the colors at 250mm do get a little distorted, but not horrible. The auto-focus sometimes struggles with closer subjects. Does well in low light.
Pros: good in low light
Cons: colors distort at 250mm

Decent Start

Though not great, this lens is a decent start into the SLR world. Unfortunately, you'll quickly realize why it's only so-so useful when you get another lens with a better aperture, especially one that zooms in & out like this does. Even outdoors with good light, that 5.6 aperture at 55mm does a number on your shutter speed and I'm guessing that's why IS is built into it. Indoors, unless you have a tripod, really good lighting or have a very steady form, you will notice some blur, even with IS on. If you buy this with a body, it's good to help you test and experiment, but if you get a body with no lens, don't bother getting this as your first. Still, if you're new and get this with a body, use it to help you understand aspects of photography & lens technology.
Pros: quality is acceptable, image stabiization is helpful, useful as a walk around lens outdoors
Cons: not a fast lens, aperture at 55mm goes to 5.6 automatically, quickly loses usefulness

Great lens

I purchased this lens shortly after purchasing a Canon xs. I have used it for nature and landscape photos and has performed great. I have had the lens for over a year. Dropped it once on concrete and didn't phase it. I have found this to be a very good lens for portrait pictures also. Has a great field of view and all my pictures have had great color and clarity. It is not in the class with the L series lens but for the money is hard to beat.
Pros: Superior build quality, Super-sharp images

Ok for snapshots

This is often the standard lens that comes with many of the DSLR's. At first glance, it's great that it's lightweight and has good focal length range.
It's ok for everyday snapshots but ends there.
Has terrible end distortion, especially at lower focal lengths(wide angle), which makes it an issue for landscapes, group pics, etc.
If you're at all concerned about image quality, you'll want to buy a replacement for this lens sooner than later.
No, I would not recommend this to a friend.

When I got my T3 I knew I needed an upgrade from the kit lens. After a lot of research I knew this lens is the one. When I finally got it I tested right away and the results were amazing. I just love this lens overall. Takes amazing nature photos. And now I have a 7D the pictures are even sharper than ever.
Pros: Superior build quality, Super-sharp images

A Good Entry Level Lens

This lens comes with many Rebel camera kits. Given its' price it is very capable and versatile and has also gotten quite a couple of positive reviews for that. I have successfully used it for macro, landscape and portrait photography. It does a decent job in all of these categories and therefore makes it a great learning tool for the beginning photographer. As one advances one may outgrow this lens but possibly with a good idea what one will find important in future purchases.
Pros: price, versatility

Ya get what ya pay for

No, its not an "L" series lens, so it wouldnt be fair to compare it to one. Lets do it any way, dollar for dollar the EF-S 55-250mm f/4-5.6 IS blows away any "L" lens. Sharpness, contrast, overall quality sure the "L" lens is far superior, but look how much extra you have to pay to get that. Long story short. For 4 times the price, the "L" isnt four times the lens!!!!!!!!!!
Pros: Super-sharp images, Superior build quality, Fast auto-focus, canon quality
